Why Your External SSD Is Slower Than Its Advertised Speed

Advertised SSD speeds are best-case figures. Check the full connection, source drive, file workload, sustained writes, heat, and computer activity before blaming the drive.

An external SSD’s advertised speed is a best-case figure, not a promise that every file copy will run at that rate. The speed you see depends on the entire connection—from the drive and cable to the computer port—as well as the source drive, file type, write-cache behavior, heat, and activity on the computer. Check those factors one at a time before assuming the SSD is faulty.

Why advertised speed and copy speed differ

Manufacturer speed claims are obtained under particular test conditions. SanDisk says its stated speeds come from internal testing and may vary with the host device, usage conditions, and other factors. Treat a peak sequential-speed figure as a reference for favorable conditions, not a universal guarantee for everyday transfers. SanDisk Support

Also distinguish read speed from write speed. Copying data to the SSD tests writes; copying data from it tests reads. A result in one direction does not establish performance in the other.

The connection can limit the drive

The SSD, computer port, cable, adapter, hub, and any enclosure all contribute to the connection’s maximum capability. If one part supports a slower interface, it can hold back the rest. USB-C identifies the connector shape; it does not, by itself, tell you the data rate. Check the SSD specifications and your computer’s documentation rather than judging by the port’s appearance. Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

A hub, dock, adapter, or extension cable can also introduce a slower link. To isolate it, connect the SSD directly to the computer, then add components back one at a time if the result improves.

Check the cable’s data rating

A cable may charge a device without supporting the data rate your SSD and port can use. Look for a clearly stated data-rate rating and match it to the documented capabilities of both devices. If you are considering a USB-C 10Gbps data cable, first confirm that the SSD and computer port support that interface; the cable cannot make a slower port faster. The source drive and file workload matter

A copy cannot run faster than the data can be supplied. If the source device is slow or busy, the external SSD may be waiting for it. The workload matters too: transferring one large file is different from copying many small files, which involve more per-file work. Background indexing, scans, and other programs can compete for computer resources. SanDisk Support Seagate Support

For a useful comparison, try one large file from a fast internal source, then compare with the task that seemed slow. Keep the read or write direction clear: those are different operations.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

Long writes can slow after a fast start

Some SSDs initially write data to a cache. Once that cache fills, the sustained write rate can fall. Seagate describes this as one reason a transfer may start quickly and then settle at a lower rate. A fast burst followed by a decline is therefore not the same symptom as a low rate from the beginning. Heat during sustained activity is another possible contributor. Seagate Support SanDisk Support

SanDisk also lists excessive heat and insufficient free space as possible factors. If the drive is hot, let it cool before repeating a comparison; check that it has reasonable free capacity as well. SanDisk Support

A step-by-step way to find the bottleneck

  1. Identify the hardware. Note the exact SSD model and its published interface. Check the computer documentation for the port’s supported data rate; do not infer it from USB-C’s shape.
  2. Connect directly. Temporarily remove a hub, dock, adapter, or extension cable. If performance changes, reconnect those parts one at a time to identify which one affects the result.
  3. Verify the cable. Use the supplied cable or another data cable rated for the required interface. Confirm that the SSD and port support the rate you are trying to use before buying a replacement cable.
  4. Use a fast source and a large file. Compare that transfer with the many-small-files workload that originally seemed slow. This helps separate source and workload effects from the connection.
  5. Watch the transfer over time. Record whether speed is low from the start or falls after an initial burst. Note whether the drive is hot during sustained activity.
  6. Reduce competing activity. Check free space and pause unnecessary indexing, scans, or other active programs where appropriate. Repeat under similar conditions so the results are comparable.
  7. Try another computer if needed. If performance remains far below the device’s documented expectations through a known-compatible port and cable, a second computer can help distinguish a host limitation from a drive-side issue. Back up important data before destructive diagnostics or reformatting.

This sequence is a practical way to isolate variables, not a vendor-certified benchmark protocol. No universal speed threshold establishes when an SSD should be replaced; results depend on the specific model and test conditions.

How to compare results fairly

When comparing two setups or drives, hold the conditions steady: use the same host, port, cable, source, file size, and read/write direction. Compare like with like, including whether the measurement is a brief sequential benchmark or a prolonged real-world copy. A short peak result and a long sustained transfer answer different questions. Useful comparison points are the end-to-end interface, sustained writes after any cache effect, large-file versus small-file behavior, and heat under the intended workload.
