First check your computer’s Ethernet link speed, then compare it with an Internet speed test. The link speed is the rate negotiated between your computer and the router or switch; it is not your ISP’s speed. A low link rate points toward the cable, ports, adapter, or negotiation. A high link rate with slow Internet results points farther upstream or to the test conditions.
Check the Ethernet link speed and Internet speed separately
Record two figures: the negotiated Ethernet link rate and the result of a repeatable Internet speed test. The operating system’s link-rate display describes the local connection to the router or switch, while the speed test measures Internet performance. Neither number alone identifies the faulty component.

Find the link rate in Windows
- Press Windows+R, type
ncpa.cpl, and press Enter. - Right-click Ethernet and choose Status.
- Note the speed shown in the status window, then run an Internet speed test over Ethernet and note its download and upload results.
This route is documented by TP-Link’s link-speed guide. Microsoft’s current networking troubleshooting guidance applies to Windows 10 and 11; Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, so do not treat it as generally supported.

Open System Settings → Network → Ethernet → Details → Hardware, as described in the TP-Link guide. Menu wording can vary by macOS release; look in the Ethernet hardware details for link-speed information if the labels differ.

Why Ethernet may be capped at 100 Mbps
A 100 Mbps local link usually means at least one part of the connection is negotiating at that rate. Check the complete path: the computer’s adapter, the router or switch port, and every cable, wall jack, dock, or adapter between them. A Cat6 label cannot make a 100 Mbps port operate at Gigabit speed.
Reseat the cable and try a known-good one
Unplug and firmly reconnect the Ethernet cable at both ends. Confirm that the router end is in a LAN port, not the port intended for the modem or Internet connection. Substitute a cable known to work at the expected speed. Microsoft recommends checking both ends and trying another cable; Intel likewise recommends a proven cable when troubleshooting Gigabit links.

If the connection passes through a wall jack, switch, dock, or USB-to-Ethernet adapter, isolate those parts too—for example, temporarily connect the computer to a different router LAN port using a short, known-good cable.
Confirm that both ports support the expected rate
The negotiated link cannot exceed what the devices and ports at both ends, or any intermediate equipment, support. Check the specifications for the computer’s network adapter and the router or switch port. For Intel Gigabit adapters, Intel recommends leaving Speed & Duplex at Auto Negotiation and ensuring the device at the other end can negotiate Gigabit. Forcing a speed setting is not a universal fix.

Intel’s Support article, last reviewed November 28, 2022, says: “Gigabit recommended setting is Auto-negotiation.” That recommendation applies to Intel Ethernet adapters; see Intel’s Gigabit-speed troubleshooting guidance.
Understand cable category in context
Cable category and installation quality matter, but the category alone does not guarantee a particular speed or Internet result. As a model-specific example, Cisco’s 2026 documentation for its C9350 multigigabit switch ports lists 1, 2.5, and 5 Gbps over Cat5e, and up to 10 Gbps over Cat6 or Cat6A. In that documentation, 10 Gbps over Cat6 is limited to 55 m, while Cat6A can support 10 Gbps to 100 m under specified conditions. Cisco notes that cable condition and termination quality can affect reach and performance. These figures describe that switch family and its stated conditions, not every home network. Work out whether the computer, router, or ISP is responsible
Make comparisons under similar conditions: use the same speed-test service, connect over Ethernet, and avoid drawing conclusions from one unusually high or low result.

If another computer gets better results on the same path, focus on the original computer’s cable connection, adapter, port, or driver. If multiple devices are slow, compare wired and Wi-Fi results and restart the modem and router according to their manufacturers’ instructions. Microsoft’s Windows Ethernet troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the router connection, trying another cable, restarting networking equipment, and comparing another PC.

Compare router and direct-modem connections when appropriate
If your ISP setup permits a direct connection, test a computer connected to the modem and compare it with the router-connected result. TP-Link’s router troubleshooting guidance says matching results in both arrangements point toward the modem or ISP; a faster direct-modem result points toward the router or its configuration. Some ISP setups do not support or make this test appropriate. Follow your modem and ISP instructions, and reconnect the normal modem-to-router arrangement when finished. Check drivers only after the physical path
If the connection works properly on other devices and the cable and ports check out, investigate the affected computer’s Ethernet adapter driver—especially if the slowdown began after a system update. Use the computer or adapter manufacturer’s support page for the appropriate driver. Microsoft recommends downloading a driver backup before uninstalling an adapter driver, then restarting Windows so it can attempt to reinstall it. Treat Windows network reset as a later option: Microsoft says, “Using network reset should be the last step you try,” in its Windows-specific troubleshooting guidance.
When to replace equipment
Buy only what the diagnosis points to. A known-good Cat6 cable can be a reasonable replacement to test a suspected cable fault, but Cat6 by itself does not raise Internet speed or overcome a slower port. Consider a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter only if the computer lacks a built-in port or you need one as a comparison device. A cable tester is generally relevant to permanent in-wall cabling or higher-rate links, rather than an ordinary first check. For a replacement cable or adapter, verify the supported speed at both ends, cable category and run length, whether it is a patch cable or permanent installation, and compatibility with the computer.
