If an Ethernet cable will not unplug, the connector’s release latch may not be disengaging—or the device’s port design or cable boot may be blocking access to it. For a standard RJ45 plug, press the flexible latch down and ease the connector straight out by holding its body near the port. If it does not come free with light effort, stop rather than pulling harder; some devices require model-specific handling.
How to release a standard Ethernet cable
- Grip the connector, not the cable. Hold the RJ45 plug close to the port so you are not putting pulling tension on the cable.
- Press the release latch down. The flexible tab on the plug retains it in the port; it needs to disengage before the connector can slide out.
- Ease the plug straight out. Use light pressure. If it does not move, stop and inspect the latch, cable boot and device port before trying again.
Do not treat extra force or a metal object pushed into the port as a universal fix. The manufacturer instructions cited below do not establish improvised tools as safe across devices.

Why an Ethernet plug can feel stuck
The release tab is hard to reach
The latch may be difficult to press if there is little clearance around the port or the plug has a bulky boot. A snagless boot covers and protects the tab to help prevent it from catching or snapping, but its design can also leave less of the tab exposed to your finger. StarTech explains the distinction in its molded-versus-snagless cable FAQ. A snagless boot is not a way to free a connector that is already stuck.
The device port has a model-specific release motion
Some ports do not behave like a standard, unobstructed RJ45 jack. For certain Dell laptops with expandable Ethernet ports, Dell instructs users to press the port downward while pressing the cable’s release tab. Dell warns that pulling upward on the port as you depress the tab makes removal harder and that excessive force can damage the cable or port. This applies to the models listed in Dell’s instructions for expandable Ethernet ports, not to Ethernet ports generally.

Lenovo describes a different issue for ThinkPad E14 Type 20RA and 20RB units manufactured before April 21, 2020: the Ethernet connector door may make the cable difficult to remove. Lenovo’s procedure is to slowly and carefully push the cable down, then pull it up, repeating the motion while slowly pulling the cable out. If the problem persists, Lenovo advises contacting support. Follow this only for the specified E14 condition; it is not a general technique for ThinkPads or other devices. The latch or port may be damaged
A broken or inaccessible release tab cannot reliably disengage the plug. A visibly damaged connector or port, or a connector that will not release with gentle pressure, is a reason to stop—not to increase force.

What to check before trying again
- Identify the device and port. Check the device manual or its support page for instructions specific to the model.
- Inspect the release tab. If it is intact and reachable, press it fully before gently pulling on the connector body.
- Check the boot and surrounding clearance. Look for a snagless or bulky boot that makes the tab hard to press, or for a port mechanism that changes the required motion.
- Stop if gentle release fails. Do not continue if the tab cannot be depressed, the cable or port looks damaged, or the connector remains stuck. Contact the device maker or a qualified technician.
When a support procedure is not a home repair
IBM documents a cable-extraction issue for the System x3550 and a service-specific workaround that reduces how much the connector latch engages the planar Ethernet connector. That is model-specific service context, not a general procedure for removing a stuck cable. See IBM’s System x3550 support page; do not apply its workaround to other devices.
If the cable latch is damaged
A replacement cable may make sense if the existing cable’s latch is broken or its boot prevents access, but buying a snagless cable will not release a plug already stuck in a port. Before choosing a replacement, check the required cable length, category and clearance around the specific port.
