Why don’t my Dyson Airwrap curls last?
Dyson’s guidance points to several possible causes: hair texture (including straight, fine, or heavy hair), heat and airflow settings, styling products, and technique. In particular, a section that is not fully dried or a curl released before it cools may lose its shape sooner. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a controlled comparison of how different hair types perform; there is no published statistic here establishing how often curls fall or how much a given fix improves retention.

Dyson’s March 13, 2026 article puts the main technique issue plainly: “If they aren’t blow-dried for long enough or cooled sufficiently, your Dyson Airwrap™ curls may not last.” The practical first step is to change the styling sequence before buying anything.
How do you keep curls from dropping?
- Start with damp hair. Dyson recommends beginning when hair is around 80% dry, and says the barrels work best on damp hair. Avoid starting with soaking-wet hair, which needs more drying, or fully dry hair that may not wrap and style as intended.
- Work in smaller, defined sections. Take a manageable section so the airflow can wrap it and dry it evenly. If the section is too large, the inside may still be damp when the outside seems ready.
- Dry the whole section, then use the cold shot. Hold the section until it is dry. Dyson’s curl guide recommends at least 15 seconds of styling; its detailed guide gives 5–10 seconds for the cold shot, while another Dyson article recommends 10–15 seconds depending on style and hair type. Treat these as procedural guidance, not measured guarantees, and follow the instructions for your Airwrap model.
- Release gently and let the curl set. If you want a more secure set, clip each curl while it is still warm and leave it wrapped as it cools. Dyson recommends letting curls set for a full 15 minutes. Avoid touching, brushing, or rearranging them during that time.
- Separate only after cooling. For a softer finish, gently loosen cooled curls with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Brushing while curls are still warm can disrupt the shape before it has set.
The timings above are Dyson’s recommendations, not test results showing that every head of hair will hold a curl for a particular length of time. Adjust the heat and airflow to suit your hair and the instructions for your model rather than assuming one setting works for everyone.

Could your products be weighing curls down?
Use prep products sparingly. Dyson recommends a lightweight leave-in pre-style product and cautions that oil-based prep or too much product can make hair overly silky or weigh it down. If curls collapse, try the same technique with less product before adding another layer.
A lightweight hairspray or Dyson Chitosan post-style serum are optional finishing examples named by Dyson, not requirements. Apply any finishing product lightly; adding more is not a substitute for drying and cooling the curl properly.

Which Airwrap barrel should you use?

Barrel choice changes the shape you are aiming for; it does not address every cause of curls falling flat. Dyson says its re-engineered barrels are sold separately and fit all generations of Airwrap multi-stylers, but check the exact listing for compatibility with your device before purchasing.

- Set the curl with the cold shot, using your model’s instructions as the guide.
- Clip curls while warm if useful, then leave them undisturbed until completely cool.
- Keep prep products light and choose the barrel for the curl shape you want.
