A close selfie can make your nose look larger and your face’s proportions seem different because the camera is much nearer to some features than others. That change comes mainly from perspective, not simply from using a wide-angle lens. Wide lenses can also stretch faces near the edges of the frame, a separate effect that can make group photos and wide selfies look unusual.
Why a close camera changes facial proportions
When a camera is close to your face, your nose is usually nearer to it than your ears and the sides of your face. Nearby features therefore appear larger relative to features farther away. The closer the camera, the more noticeable that difference can be. Ricoh’s portrait guidance cautions that a short-distance portrait made with a short focal length can produce a “larger-than-life nose.”

This is called perspective distortion: it describes how a three-dimensional subject’s proportions appear from a particular camera position. It is why a face photographed at arm’s length may look different from the same face photographed from farther away.

Camera distance is the key to the usual change in facial proportions. Focal length controls how much of the scene fits into the image and how large subjects appear in the frame. A longer focal length can make it easier to photograph a face from farther away while keeping it similarly large in the picture. It is that change in shooting position—not focal length by itself—that changes perspective. Nikon explains focal length’s role in field of view and subject size in its guide for beginners.

ND4 filter provide 2-stop light reduction, recommended for cloudy day use.
- 【NOTE】This K&F Concept filters kit are compatible with all 55mm lenses. Please verify your camera's lens thread size before ordering. This number is always preceded by a "Ø" (diameter) symbol. For example: Ø55=55mm lens thread size.
If you switch to a longer focal length but stay in the same spot, you mainly narrow the view and enlarge the crop; the face’s perspective does not change. To change the proportions, step farther back, then adjust the focal length or crop to get the framing you want.
Why faces near the edges of wide photos can look stretched
A second effect can appear in wide-angle images: a face near the frame’s edge may look stretched toward the corner. This is different from the larger-nose effect caused by photographing from close range. Ricoh advises keeping faces near the center of a wide image to make edge distortion less noticeable.

- Lens Protection & Prevent UV Ray: MCUV filter has two functions, one is to prevent UV ray and weakens the blue tone in images caused by UV, ensuring clarity and color. Another is to protect the lens away from dust and scratches.
- Import AGC Glass: Made by importing AGC optical glass with a CNC-Non-Slip design frame for easily remove and installation, 94% transmittance ensures HD image quality, and no negative effect restores true color.
- 18 Multi-Layer Nanometer Coatings: Double side multi-layer coating, protects the lens and also reduces reflection coming from the filter self.
- Wide Angle Lens No Vignetting: UV filter only 3.3mm thickness with double side polishing technology ensures no vignetting the images are still clear enough even on the telephoto lens.
- Note: This UV filter only fits a 67mm camera lens, please verify your lens size before ordering it. The number beside the Ø (diameter) symbol represents your lens size, please choose the same size filter. Focal Length (mm) ≠ Filter Size (Ø mm)
Neither effect necessarily means the lens has a defect. Optical lens distortion usually refers to image-mapping errors such as barrel or pincushion bending, where lines that should be straight curve. Edge stretching in a wide-angle image can occur even when straight lines remain straight: mapping three-dimensional space onto a flat image involves trade-offs, and rectilinear projection can stretch off-center subjects. ZEISS discusses these distinctions in its technical paper on distortion and projection.

How to make faces look more natural in photos
- Move the camera farther away. For a phone selfie, increase the distance if you can, then crop or adjust the view to keep the composition you want.
- Keep faces near the middle of wide shots. In group photos and wide selfies, placing people toward the center can reduce the stretched appearance common near the edges.
- Step back for a close portrait. If you have a zoom or interchangeable-lens camera, take the portrait from farther away and use a longer focal length for similar framing. No one focal length is ideal for every face, camera format, or room.
- Consider the background before correcting an image. Face-aware software can adjust facial geometry when you cannot change the camera position or framing, but the adjustment may also affect background lines and shapes.
Capture changes or software correction?
Changing the camera position and composition addresses the cause before the image is processed. It is usually the most direct option when you can step back and choose where the face sits in the frame. Software can be useful when distance or framing cannot be changed, especially for existing images or wide-angle video, but its results depend on the correction and the scene.

- 【Import Optical Glass】Crafted from premium AGC optical glass with 8 multi-layer coatings, this ND filter reduces reflections and glare, ensuring superior image quality.
- 【Versatile Light Control】With 1 to 9 stops of adjustable light reduction and 360-degree rotation for precise dimming settings, this filter is perfect for diverse scenarios. (Note: Max stops may cause a cross-pattern effect, commonly known as an "X black cross." This phenomenon is natural and temporary, occurring due to the adjustable ND filter's interaction with specific lenses and focal lengths.
- 【Glare-Free Surface】Treated with an oxidized sandblasting process, this filter prevents unwanted stray light and minimizes unnecessary reflections on the metal surface.
- 【Slim and Secure】At a mere 7.4mm thickness, the CNC-patterned design ensures enhanced friction while rotating, making it easy to attach/detach lenses and accessories anytime, anywhere.
- 【Compatibility Note】This ND filter suits all 55mm lenses. Check your camera's lens thread size (usually beside a "ø" diameter symbol) before ordering. Additionally, a 58mm lens cap is required for this 55mm variable ND filter.
| Approach | Most useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Adjust the camera position or framing | You can move farther away or place the face nearer the center. | More distance may require a crop, a longer focal length, or a different composition. |
| Correct the image in software | You cannot change how or where the image was captured. | Warping the face can also alter background geometry; video correction must manage consistency across frames. |
A 2021 paper by Wei-Sheng Lai, YiChang Shih, Chia-Kai Liang, and Ming-Hsuan Yang, Correcting Face Distortion in Wide-Angle Videos, describes a face-aware method that includes line preservation and temporal consistency. In the paper’s user study, 83.9% of participants preferred the proposed algorithm over comparison alternatives based on perspective projection. That is a result from this study, not a general preference rate for all users or correction software.
