Why Your Docker Build Crashes on a VPS and How to Fix It

Docker builds usually crash on a VPS because of memory pressure, exhausted Docker storage, a failed or misdirected daemon, BuildKit builder problems, or configuration conflicts. This diagnostic runbook shows how to prove the cause and fix it safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Docker build that dies on a VPS is usually a host-capacity, daemon, storage, or builder problem—not a Dockerfile problem by default. First capture the daemon log and host state, then identify whether the failure is an OOM kill, exhausted Docker storage, a dead or misdirected daemon, a BuildKit/builder issue, or a kernel/configuration conflict. The diagnostic sequence below fixes the common causes without destroying useful images or cache.

Start with evidence, not a Dockerfile rewrite

Do not begin by repeatedly rebuilding or deleting random images. A failed build can leave behind partial layers and cache, while another attempt may hide the original error. Capture the failure message, the exact build command, the target platform, and the time of the failure. Then check the host and daemon in this order:

  1. docker info
  2. sudo systemctl is-active docker
  3. sudo systemctl status docker
  4. sudo journalctl -xu docker.service
  5. free -h and swapon --show
  6. df -h, df -i, and docker system df
  7. docker buildx ls and, for the selected builder, docker buildx inspect --bootstrap

Run the checks while the failure is fresh. A build container can disappear after an OOM event, but the kernel and daemon logs often retain the reason.

Match the error to the likely cause

Observed symptom Most likely cause First checks
Cannot connect to the Docker daemon The service is stopped, the client is pointed at the wrong endpoint, the endpoint is unreachable, or the daemon failed during startup. docker info, service status, daemon journal, and echo $DOCKER_HOST
OOMKilled, “Out of memory,” or an abrupt death during a heavy RUN The VPS ran out of RAM or swap and the kernel OOM killer terminated a container or the daemon. free -h, swapon --show, dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'oom|killed process', and the journal
no space left on device The filesystem containing Docker’s data root or BuildKit cache is full, or it has run out of inodes. df -h, df -i, locate the Docker data root, and run docker system df
The build hangs, returns EOF, or fails only for ARM/AMD64 cross-builds The selected Buildx builder is unhealthy, unbootstrapped, remote, or using emulation with insufficient memory. docker buildx ls, docker buildx inspect --bootstrap, platform and endpoint settings
The daemon will not start after editing daemon.json A malformed setting or a conflict between configuration and startup flags, especially duplicate hosts directives. Daemon journal and the systemd unit or drop-in files

These categories can overlap. For example, a full disk can prevent the daemon from starting, and a memory-starved daemon can make a client report only a connection error.

Confirm that the client is talking to the right Docker daemon

Check the local service

Run:

docker info
sudo systemctl is-active docker
sudo systemctl status docker

If the service is inactive, the client cannot build until the daemon is running. The status output may show a configuration or permission error; do not assume that restarting it is a fix until you have captured the failure details.

Check for a remote endpoint

Docker documents that “Cannot connect to the Docker daemon” can mean that the daemon is not running or that the client is pointed at an unreachable host. A remote context is possible when DOCKER_HOST or a Docker context redirects the client. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
echo "$DOCKER_HOST"
docker context ls
docker context show

Unset an accidental DOCKER_HOST, or select the intended context, only after confirming which daemon should perform the build. A shell profile, CI variable, or system service can reintroduce the setting on the next login.

Interpret a daemon-startup failure

If systemd reports that dockerd exited, inspect the journal before trying another build:

sudo journalctl -xu docker.service

On distributions that route service messages elsewhere, also check /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages. A daemon that starts and immediately stops is commonly rejecting a configuration, failing to load a kernel feature, or encountering a storage problem.

Read the daemon log before changing settings

Normal logs often identify the exact layer, filesystem, plugin, or signal involved. If they are too terse, enable Docker’s debug logging with the debug key in /etc/docker/daemon.json, then reload the daemon according to your distribution’s systemd procedure. A minimal configuration fragment is:

{
  "debug": true
}

Merge the key into an existing JSON object rather than replacing unrelated settings. Invalid JSON prevents startup. After collecting enough detail, turn debug logging back off; it increases log volume and can itself consume disk on a small VPS.

Docker’s daemon troubleshooting guidance emphasizes that daemon logs may diagnose problems that are invisible in the build output. Preserve the timestamped log lines around the crash so you can correlate them with kernel OOM or filesystem messages.

Fix memory exhaustion and OOM kills

How an OOM crash happens

During a compile, asset bundle, package installation, or emulated build, a build container can consume more memory than the VPS has available. Docker states that when containers attempt to use more memory than the system has, an Out of Memory exception can occur and the kernel OOM killer may stop either a container or the Docker daemon. The visible result may be OOMKilled, “killed process” in the kernel log, an abruptly terminated RUN step, or a later daemon connection failure.

Confirm host pressure

free -h
swapon --show
dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'oom|killed process'
sudo journalctl -k --since "30 minutes ago"

Look at available memory, not only the amount marked “free.” Check whether swap exists and whether the kernel recorded a kill at the build time. If the daemon itself was killed, the build output may end with a generic EOF or connection error instead of naming OOM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce peak usage

  • Stop unrelated application services for the build window, or move the build away from a production workload.
  • Reduce parallel compilation and package-install concurrency in the build tools used by the image.
  • Build only the required target and stage instead of running several platform builds simultaneously.
  • Use a multi-stage Dockerfile so compilers and temporary artifacts do not remain in the runtime image; this reduces storage and later work, although it does not eliminate the peak memory of a single compile.
  • For cross-architecture builds, prefer a native builder when possible; emulation can require materially more memory.

When to add swap or resize

Approved swap can absorb short bursts, but it is slower than RAM and does not make an undersized VPS suitable for sustained parallel compilation. Add or enlarge swap only within your provider’s policy and monitor the result. If kernel evidence shows repeated OOM events, move the build to a VPS with more RAM or to a separate build runner. A larger builder is the durable fix when the workload routinely exceeds the host’s memory headroom.

Fix “no space left on device” and inode exhaustion

Find the full filesystem

df -h
df -i
docker system df

Check both blocks (df -h) and inodes (df -i). Millions of small package files can exhaust inodes even when gigabytes remain. Identify the filesystem containing Docker’s data root, normally under /var/lib/docker unless the daemon has been configured otherwise:

docker info | grep -i -E 'Docker Root Dir|Storage Driver'

Also inspect the VPS volume that holds system logs and temporary files. A full root filesystem can stop Docker even when a separate data disk still has capacity.

Prune only data you understand

docker system df separates images, containers, local volumes, and build cache so you can estimate what is reclaimable. Remove unused objects deliberately. For example, stopped containers and unused images may be disposable on a dedicated build host, but deleting them on a server that needs rollback images can cause an outage or a slow re-pull.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
docker container prune
docker image prune
docker builder prune

Each command prompts before deletion; review the scope and use more selective filters when your Docker version supports them. Do not prune named volumes unless you have verified that their data is disposable. Avoid deleting files directly inside Docker’s data root: manual removal can corrupt metadata and leave the daemon unable to start.

Configure BuildKit garbage collection

BuildKit stores layers and cache in the builder or daemon data directory. Docker documents configurable garbage-collection policies based on cache age and disk thresholds. The documented defaults in 2026 are a reservedSpace of 10% of total disk or 10 GB, whichever is lower, and a maxUsedSpace of 60% of total disk or 100 GB, whichever is lower. These are thresholds, not a promise that a small VPS will always have enough working space for a large build.

Set policies appropriate to the volume and cache-retention needs of the host, then monitor free space after a real build. A short cache age and lower maximum usage reduce recurrence but may make later builds slower because layers must be rebuilt. A generous cache improves repeat-build speed while consuming capacity needed by the operating system and application.

Increase storage when reclamation is recurring

If the same build repeatedly fills the data volume after safe pruning and sensible garbage collection, expand the VPS disk or attach dedicated block storage. Storage expansion costs more than a cleanup command but removes a recurring operational task. Verify that the filesystem is actually grown after the provider increases the volume; an enlarged virtual disk does not always enlarge the filesystem automatically.

Make BuildKit work with the VPS instead of against it

Keep the build context small

BuildKit can skip unused context files and stages, parallelize independent work, and manage cache automatically. It cannot ignore files that you send in the context unless your .dockerignore excludes them. Keep source archives, dependency caches, test output, VCS metadata, local virtual environments, and generated artifacts out of the context when they are not inputs to the image.

A precise .dockerignore reduces upload time, memory spent processing the context, and unnecessary cache invalidation. Do not blanket-ignore a file that a later COPY instruction requires; a smaller context is useful only when it remains complete for the build.

Use multi-stage builds deliberately

Put compilers, headers, and test tools in a build stage and copy only the runtime artifacts into the final stage. This limits final-image size and reduces the amount of data retained between deployments. It does not make a memory-intensive compiler command smaller, so pair it with lower parallelism or a larger builder when the failure is OOM.

Split exceptionally large steps

A single RUN that downloads dependencies, compiles several components, creates source maps, and compresses assets can have a high peak in RAM and temporary disk. Where practical, split independent work into separate stages or commands so you can identify the failing operation and release intermediate data sooner. Avoid splitting solely for appearance: every extra layer can increase cache and storage use.

Inspect Buildx, platforms, and emulation

Identify the selected builder

docker buildx ls
docker buildx inspect --bootstrap

The default docker build builder uses the BuildKit library bundled with the daemon. docker buildx build can use a separately configured builder, including a remote endpoint. The listing shows which builder is selected, its driver, endpoint, supported platforms, and status. Bootstrap the intended builder and read any error before retrying.

Verify the target platform

Check the requested --platform, the VPS CPU architecture, and the builder’s advertised platforms. A build that works natively on AMD64 may hang or fail when producing ARM64 layers through emulation. Cross-architecture emulation needs additional memory and can be much slower; BuildKit layers are cached in the daemon or builder data directory, so it also increases storage pressure.

Choose native, remote, or dedicated capacity

  • Native builder: best memory and performance characteristics for its own architecture, with the simplest network path.
  • Remote builder: keeps heavy work off the production VPS but introduces endpoint authentication, network reliability, and cache-management concerns.
  • Dedicated build runner: isolates RAM, disk, and BuildKit cache from the application server; it adds infrastructure and CI configuration to maintain.

Do not treat a remote builder as a cure for a misconfigured endpoint. Confirm the builder endpoint and connectivity first; an unreachable remote service can produce the same EOF-style symptom as a failing local daemon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resolve kernel and daemon configuration conflicts

Check kernel compatibility and modules

Docker documents older or incompatible kernels and missing kernel modules as causes of incorrect operation. Compare the VPS kernel with the Docker release and distribution requirements, and inspect the daemon journal for module, overlay filesystem, cgroup, or namespace errors. On a managed VPS, the provider may need to supply a newer kernel; changing kernel settings blindly can make the host unbootable.

Remove duplicate hosts settings

A frequent startup failure occurs when hosts is specified both in /etc/docker/daemon.json and as a dockerd command-line flag supplied by systemd. Keep the setting in one supported location. Inspect the unit and drop-ins:

systemctl cat docker
sudo systemctl daemon-reload

After removing the duplicate according to your distribution’s systemd configuration guidance, reload systemd and restart Docker. If the daemon still fails, return to sudo journalctl -xu docker.service; the first configuration error is generally more useful than the final systemd summary.

Validate JSON before a restart

Every comma, quote, and brace in daemon.json matters. Merge new keys into the existing object and keep a backup before editing. A typo can turn an otherwise healthy VPS into a daemon-startup incident, so make one change at a time and retain the previous working configuration for rollback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe recovery runbook

  1. Save the failure: copy the build output, command, target platform, and timestamp.
  2. Confirm the endpoint: run docker info, check the active service, and inspect DOCKER_HOST and the Docker context.
  3. Read logs: inspect the daemon journal and kernel messages before pruning or editing configuration.
  4. Classify capacity: check RAM, swap, disk blocks, and inodes; locate the Docker data root.
  5. Protect production data: identify images needed for rollback and volumes that must not be deleted.
  6. Reclaim safely: remove only unused containers, images, and BuildKit cache that you have reviewed.
  7. Reduce the workload: narrow the context, lower build concurrency, split an oversized step, or build a single platform.
  8. Validate the builder: inspect and bootstrap Buildx, then confirm native versus emulated architecture.
  9. Correct configuration: fix JSON, duplicate startup flags, kernel/module issues, or the selected endpoint.
  10. Rebuild once: run the smallest representative build and watch memory, disk, and logs during the operation.
  11. Escalate capacity: if the evidence still shows recurring RAM or disk exhaustion, move the build or resize the VPS instead of repeating cleanup.

Choose a remedy based on the constraint

Remedy Memory headroom Docker-data disk Architecture Cache persistence Operational control Infrastructure cost
Prune unused objects and tune cache policy No new RAM; lowers competing usage Recovers space repeatedly No change Less retained cache; rebuilds may slow Requires recurring review Low direct cost; maintenance burden
Reduce context, stages, or concurrency Lowers peak demand Usually lowers transferred and retained data No change May improve cache precision Requires Dockerfile/build changes Low infrastructure cost
Resize RAM or VPS Adds predictable headroom Only changes disk if selected Usually unchanged Can retain more cache Simple once resized Higher recurring infrastructure cost
Expand Docker storage No change Adds durable capacity No change Supports longer retention Requires filesystem and monitoring work Higher recurring storage cost
Remote or dedicated builder Moves peaks off the VPS Isolates builder cache Can provide native platforms Can preserve a dedicated cache Adds endpoint, CI, and security control Additional runner and network cost

Use the least disruptive remedy that addresses the measured constraint. Cleanup is appropriate for accidental buildup; it is not a substitute for capacity when every normal build exceeds available RAM or disk.

Prevent the next crash

  • Alert on available memory, swap activity, filesystem percentage, and inode percentage, not just CPU.
  • Track the size of the Docker data root and BuildKit cache over time.
  • Keep a tested .dockerignore and review it when repository layout changes.
  • Set cache garbage-collection thresholds that leave room for the operating system and application.
  • Document which images, tags, and volumes are safe to remove on each host.
  • Pin the intended Buildx builder and platform in CI so a context or endpoint change does not silently move work.
  • Schedule heavy builds away from production peaks, or isolate them on a dedicated runner.
  • Retain daemon and kernel logs long enough to diagnose a failure after the container has vanished.

The practical rule is simple: an unexplained crash is a logging problem first. Once the log and host metrics show OOM, storage exhaustion, endpoint failure, builder/emulation trouble, or configuration conflict, the corrective action is usually clear and repeatable.
