“Workshop Has an ID of 0” usually means DayZ’s launcher cannot read a valid Workshop mod entry from your server. The first repair is to remove every entry from workshop.mods, save the configuration, reinstall all installed Workshop content, and restart the server. If the zero returns, investigate mod conflicts, dependency order, update compatibility, and the metadata of the specific Workshop item.
Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What the “Workshop Has an ID of 0” message means
A DayZ server advertises the Workshop content that clients must load. The launcher uses each item’s Workshop metadata to identify those mods. When an item appears with an ID of 0, the launcher is not receiving a usable Workshop ID for that entry.

GTXGaming describes ID 0 as a sign that the mod is not being properly loaded by the DayZ launchers. The open-source Pterohost implementation documents a lower-level cause: some Workshop authors publish a meta.cpp file containing publishedid = 0. That value is a placeholder written before an item has a real Workshop ID. If a server advertises that metadata, a launcher can reject the server or receive an empty required-mod list.
In practical terms, the message generally points to one of two conditions:

- The server’s mod list is stale, malformed, or incorrectly written in the hosting configuration.
- A particular Workshop item contains invalid published metadata, so the server cannot advertise its real ID.
It is not, by itself, proof that every installed mod is broken. Start with the server-wide reset below, then isolate a single item or dependency only if the message comes back.
First-line repair: clear the mod list and reinstall Workshop content
This is the documented repair sequence for the common configuration or stale-installation case. Perform it with the server stopped so the panel does not rewrite the mod list while you are changing it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Stop the DayZ server. Wait until the hosting panel shows that the process has fully stopped. Editing a live configuration can leave the old command line active for the next launch.
- Open the hosting panel’s configuration editor. Find the field or command-line section named
workshop.mods. This is the server’s Workshop mod list. - Remove every mod from
workshop.mods. Do not leave one suspected item behind during this reset. The purpose is to remove all potentially stale or malformed entries from the command line. - Save the configuration and exit the editor. Confirm that the saved configuration no longer contains the old Workshop list before moving on.
- Open Steam Workshop management. Select the area for installed content and run Reinstall All. This repopulates the local Workshop files rather than relying on the existing installation.
- Start the DayZ server again. Allow startup to finish before testing the launcher. A restart while Workshop files are still being restored can produce another incomplete list.
- Query the server from the launcher. Check whether the server now advertises its required mods and whether the ID 0 message has disappeared.
Removing the command-line entries and reinstalling installed Workshop content clears a bad list entry and rebuilds the local files. It is the appropriate first action, but it is not a guarantee against a mod conflict or invalid metadata supplied by a Workshop author.
Confirm that the repair actually worked
Do not judge the result only by whether the server process starts. A DayZ server can launch while its advertised required-mod list is still unusable.
- Open the launcher or server query that previously displayed the error.
- Check that the server’s required-mod list is populated instead of empty.
- Verify that no listed item is still reported as Workshop ID 0.
- Connect with a client that has the same Workshop content available and confirm that the launcher can resolve the required mods.
If the list is valid after the reset, restore your normal mod configuration carefully rather than pasting the entire old list back at once. Adding a small group at a time makes it possible to identify the entry that reintroduces the problem.
If ID 0 returns after reinstalling
A recurring error usually needs isolation rather than another blind reinstall. GTXGaming identifies mod conflicts and required load order as common reasons for recurrence. Work through the following branches in order.

Check dependencies and load order
Some mods depend on files or functionality supplied by another mod. The dependency must be available first, so place dependencies before the mods that require them. An otherwise valid Workshop installation can still fail when the server advertises items in an order their dependencies cannot use.
- Make a short list of the mods you intend to run and note each stated dependency.
- Place every dependency before the mod that requires it.
- Add only a few mods to the server at a time.
- Start the server and query the required-mod list after each small change.
- When ID 0 or an empty list returns, remove the most recently added group and test again.
This process distinguishes a general installation problem from a conflict introduced by a particular combination. It also prevents a long command line from hiding which item changed the result.
Inspect the server logs after startup
When the message returns, inspect the Web Console, server_console, and script_log rather than relying on the launcher alone. Look for the point at which Workshop content is read, mounted, or rejected, and record the mod name shown near the failure.
- If the same item is named repeatedly, remove that item and test the remaining set.
- If the log indicates an ordering or dependency problem, correct the order before reinstalling again.
- If startup reaches the game but the launcher still shows an empty required-mod list, compare the saved
workshop.modsconfiguration with the list you intended to load.
Logs are especially important when several mods are installed: the launcher’s single ID 0 message does not identify which entry caused the failure.

DayZ updates can make an existing mod set incompatible. After a game or server update, update the server and its Workshop mods, then check each mod’s Workshop page for compatibility information. Test the updated set in small groups and use the logs to identify an item that no longer loads.
Do not assume that a previously working mod will remain valid after an update. A change in the server, a dependency, or the mod’s published files can produce the same launcher symptom even when the configuration has not changed.

When one Workshop item still reports ID 0
If the server-wide reset succeeds for other content but one Workshop item continues to display ID 0, the item’s published metadata may be the problem. The Pterohost implementation notes that authors sometimes ship publishedid = 0 in meta.cpp. In that situation, reinstalling the local files cannot create a valid published ID that the author did not provide.
Community reports describe republishing or updating the mod as a possible author-side correction. Those reports are anecdotal, not a guaranteed fix. Treat the item as suspect when:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- It is the only entry that remains at ID 0 after Reinstall All.
- Removing it makes the server’s required-mod list work normally.
- The logs point to that item’s metadata rather than to a dependency or ordering error.
At that point, keep the item out of the active mod list while you contact the author or wait for a corrected publication. Repeatedly rebuilding the server cannot repair metadata embedded in the Workshop item itself.
Why the reset helps—and what it cannot fix
The reset addresses two layers at once. Clearing workshop.mods removes the server’s advertised list, including stale entries that may no longer match the files on disk. Running Reinstall All then repopulates the installed Workshop content. Starting with a clean list lets the server generate its required-mod advertisement from the files that are actually present.
That procedure does not resolve every cause of ID 0. It cannot correct:
- A dependency placed after the mod that needs it.
- A conflict between two otherwise valid mods.
- A mod that has not been updated for the current DayZ server version.
- An item whose published metadata still contains
publishedid = 0.
Those cases require controlled reintroduction of mods, log inspection, compatibility checks, or an author-side publication change.

A controlled workflow for rebuilding your mod set
Once the basic repair produces a valid launcher list, use a repeatable workflow so the next change does not recreate the problem.
1. Keep a known-good baseline
Record the small set of mods that starts successfully and produces a populated required-mod list. Change one group at a time from that baseline instead of changing the entire server configuration in one edit.
2. Add dependencies before dependent mods
For each new item, identify its stated dependencies and place those dependencies earlier in the order. If a dependency is missing or listed later, correct that before testing any other change.
3. Test after each small addition
Restart the server, wait for startup, query the launcher, and inspect the relevant console output. A small batch narrows the fault to a manageable set; adding everything at once does not.
4. Remove the last failing group
When ID 0 or an empty required-mod list returns, remove the most recent group and test the baseline. Add those items individually to identify the one that triggers the failure or the pair that conflicts.
5. Recheck after updates
Repeat the compatibility check whenever DayZ, the server software, or a required Workshop mod is updated. A working baseline is tied to the versions that produced it.

Choosing a hosting workflow for easier troubleshooting
The error is easier to resolve when you can edit the Workshop list, reinstall content, and read startup logs without waiting for a provider to perform each action. Whether you self-host or use managed DayZ server hosting, evaluate the operational controls rather than choosing on price alone.
Recommended Free Tools
- Workshop reinstall controls: Can you select installed Workshop content and run Reinstall All yourself?
- Configuration access: Can you edit
workshop.modsdirectly and verify the saved value? - Console visibility: Are the Web Console,
server_console, andscript_logavailable when a startup fails? - Update automation: Does the workflow show when the server and Workshop files were updated, and can you control the timing of updates?
- Backup and restore: Can you restore the previous configuration and game data before testing a large mod change?
- Dependency and order editing: Can you put dependencies first without having to open a support ticket?
- Geographic latency: Can you select a server location appropriate for the players who will connect?
Available controls vary by setup. The cited hosting documentation explains these controls, but it does not establish current pricing, regional availability, or affiliate terms. Confirm those details directly with any provider before choosing it.
Common mistakes that prolong the error
Editing the list while the server is running
A live process may continue using the previous command line. Stop the server first and verify that the saved configuration contains the intended value.
Reinstalling without clearing workshop.mods
Reinstalling files alone does not remove a stale advertised entry. The documented sequence requires both actions: clear the list, then reinstall installed Workshop content.
Adding the entire collection back at once
A large batch prevents you from identifying the conflicting item or dependency. Restore a few mods at a time and query the server after each change.

A dependency can be installed and still fail when it appears after the mod that needs it. Put dependencies first before investigating more complicated causes.
Assuming every ID 0 is a hosting fault
If only one item remains at ID 0 after a clean reinstall, its published metadata may be invalid. The appropriate next step is isolation and author-side correction, not an endless cycle of server reinstalls.
Quick recovery checklist
- Stop the DayZ server completely.
- Open the hosting configuration editor.
- Remove all entries from
workshop.mods. - Save and exit the configuration editor.
- In Steam Workshop management, select installed content and run Reinstall All.
- Start the server and query it from the launcher.
- If the error remains, add mods in small groups with dependencies first.
- Inspect Web Console,
server_console, andscript_log. - After a DayZ update, update the server and mods and check each Workshop page for compatibility.
- If one item alone remains at ID 0, remove it from the active list and treat its published metadata as the likely cause.
Bottom line
Workshop ID 0 is generally a failure to load or publish a valid mod identifier, not a mysterious network code. Clear workshop.mods, reinstall all installed Workshop content, and restart the server first. If that does not hold, use dependency order, small-batch testing, and the server logs to isolate the failing item. A zero that follows one Workshop item after every local repair may require the mod author to republish or correct its metadata.
