A DayZ server that repeatedly restarts has one of four causes: an intentional scheduler or watchdog action, a process crash, a startup or configuration failure, or an outside service terminating and relaunching it. The restart itself is only a symptom. The decisive evidence is the exact time, whether the process exited normally, and what the newest files in the server’s profiles folder say at that moment.

Start by making the logs unambiguous, preserve a copy after every restart, then test one change at a time. This method separates a bad configuration from a mod script, BattlEye, missing runtime files, a freeze, or a hosting-panel policy without guessing.

Classify the restart before changing anything
Watch one complete failure and write down the timestamp to the minute. Note whether the server window closes, a watchdog immediately starts a new process, or a control panel records a scheduled restart. That observation determines which evidence matters most.

Do not infer a cause from frequency alone. A five-minute interval can be a watchdog responding to a hang, while an apparently random restart can be a mod fault that occurs only when a particular object or player action is loaded.

Put every useful log in one known folder
Set an explicit profiles path
Bohemia’s Server Configuration documentation defines -profiles as the folder containing server logs. Use a full, writable path rather than relying on the launcher’s current directory. For example:
-profiles=C:DayZprofiles -doLogs -adminLog -netLogThe capitalization shown above matches the documented parameters. Keep the folder outside temporary directories and grant the account running the service permission to create and append files.

Append -freezeCheck when you suspect the process is alive but no longer processing. The documented behavior is to stop a server frozen for more than five minutes and create a dump file. That dump is valuable evidence, but deliberately terminating a frozen process can interrupt players, so remove the option after the investigation if you do not need ongoing hang detection.
Preserve the files before the next test
After each restart, copy the newest RPT, ADM, script, crash and BattlEye files to a dated evidence folder before editing anything. Keep the original timestamps. A later launch can overwrite or append to the same file, making the first failure difficult to identify.
- RPT: general startup, engine, script and runtime messages.
- ADM: administration events; the Administration Logs documentation says it is created in the profiles folder when
-adminlogis enabled. - Net log: network-related events when
-netlogis enabled. - Script log: script diagnostics, often included with or referenced by the RPT output.
- Crash or dump files: evidence of an engine crash or a freeze captured by
-freezeCheck. - BattlEye logs: service startup, player-kick and BattlEye-specific failures.
Read the restart evidence in the right order
Start at the final timestamp
Open the newest RPT and search upward from its end for the last warning, error, exception or shutdown line before the process disappears. Compare that time with the ADM and BattlEye files. A clean shutdown line followed by a new startup usually points to a scheduler, watchdog or administrator; an abrupt final error followed by a new process points toward a crash.
Separate a symptom from a cause
A line such as SCRIPT (E) identifies a script error at a particular point in execution. It is a strong lead when it names a recently installed mod or mission script, but it does not prove that every restart is mod-caused. Correlate the line with the restart time and reproduce it on an otherwise identical server.

Look for the earliest failure, not the loudest one
One missing file can trigger several follow-on errors. In an RPT, the first path, DLL, configuration or permission failure is generally more useful than the final cascade of shutdown messages. Record the exact filename and path; spelling and case mistakes in a mod or configuration path are common.
Use the ADM and net logs as corroboration
The ADM file can show an administrative command, player event or shutdown request that coincides with the restart. Network entries can reveal a connection or handshake problem, but a network warning by itself is not proof that the operating system terminated the server. Always match the message’s timestamp to the process and panel records.

Decide whether the failure is before or after mission load
Exit before a mission loads
When the process dies immediately after launch, concentrate on serverDZ.cfg, launch parameters, required folders, mod paths, permissions and runtime dependencies. Do not begin by deleting player data or changing gameplay settings; those changes cannot repair a parser or DLL failure.
Exit during a live session
A server that runs for minutes or hours before failing has already passed basic configuration validation. Correlate the crash with a player action, zone, vehicle, weather event, persistence save or scheduled task. A mod script, memory-related fault, BattlEye service interruption or watchdog response becomes more plausible than a simple syntax error.

Nearly identical intervals suggest an external schedule or health check. Irregular intervals that follow load or a repeatable in-game event suggest a process fault. Record at least several occurrences before changing the setup; one restart can be coincidental.
Fix startup and configuration failures
Validate serverDZ.cfg after every edit
Undo the most recent change first. Check matching braces, quotation marks, semicolons, commas, class names and numeric values. Confirm that every path points to a file or directory that exists on the server and that the service account can read it. Keep a known-good copy so you can perform a binary comparison rather than reconstructing the file from memory.
Remove stale launch parameters
Inspect the actual command used by the service or panel, not just a desktop shortcut. Duplicate parameters, an obsolete profile path or a mod flag copied from another installation can make the process exit before logging much information. Temporarily reduce the command to the executable, a known mission or configuration, and the explicit logging options.
Check the working directory and permissions
A relative path can resolve differently when launched by a service manager than when started interactively. Use absolute paths for profiles, configuration and mod directories. Ensure the account can create the profiles folder and write RPT, ADM and crash files; a permissions failure may look like a crash when the process cannot initialize logging.
Isolate mods without guessing
Make a clean baseline
- Stop the server and copy the current launch command, configuration and profiles folder.
- Remove recently added or updated
-modand-serverModentries, leaving the rest of the environment unchanged. - Start the server once with logging enabled and wait through the period in which it normally restarts.
- Compare the new RPT and script output with the saved modded run.
If the clean server remains stable, the change is associated with the removed set, but not necessarily with the last mod you installed. If it still fails, return to configuration, runtime, BattlEye or external termination evidence.
Reintroduce one item per test
Add one mod or server-side mod entry, restart, and observe the same test window. Keep a simple table of the exact command, mod version, start time, end time and final log line. Adding several entries at once destroys the causal signal and forces you to repeat the entire test.

Interpret script errors carefully
A SCRIPT (E) entry that names a mod file is a useful lead, especially when it appears immediately before the restart. Check whether the mod’s required dependency is present and whether the installed game/server build matches the mod’s supported version. If the error occurs only when one mission or object is loaded, test that mission on the clean baseline before blaming the whole mod stack.
Repair BattlEye service failures
BattlEye’s FAQ describes service-installation or startup failures as situations in which something on the system prevents installation or startup of the BE Service required by BattlEye-enabled servers. Such a failure can occur before players connect and can produce a restart loop when a panel keeps relaunching the process.

- Look for errors naming
BEService.exe,BEService_x64.exeor the BattlEye service directory. - Review antivirus and firewall quarantine, blocking and controlled-folder-access events at the same timestamp.
- Allow the service executables and directory under the host’s security policy, using the minimum permissions required.
- Confirm that the account launching DayZ can install and start a Windows service.
Recreate the BattlEye service
The BattlEye FAQ recommends deleting the BattlEye service directory so it can be recreated, then retrying with appropriate permissions. Stop the server first, preserve the relevant logs, remove only the service directory identified by the installation, and launch again. If security software immediately restores the block, fix that exclusion or policy before repeating the deletion.
Do not treat a player kick or a single BattlEye restriction message as proof of a server-process crash. The service log, operating-system event and RPT timestamp must agree before you classify BattlEye as the restart cause.
Fix missing runtime files and immediate crashes
If the RPT reports a missing DLL or runtime error, install or repair the required Microsoft Visual C++ x64 runtime, then restart the service. A community troubleshooting index identifies missing Visual C++ runtime files as an immediate-crash cause. Use the runtime architecture required by the server; installing an unrelated 32-bit package does not repair a 64-bit dependency.
Confirm the repair
- Record the exact DLL or runtime name from the RPT and Windows event log.
- Install or repair the current x64 Visual C++ runtime through a trusted system-administration process.
- Reboot if the installer requests it, then start the server with the explicit profiles path.
- Check that the missing-runtime line no longer appears before investigating mods.
Do not download individual DLL files from random websites. The filename alone is not enough to identify a safe replacement, and an incorrect copy can create a different crash.

Diagnose freezes and watchdog restarts
Recognize a hang
A hang leaves the process present but stops useful progress: player connections time out, the console stops advancing, CPU usage becomes abnormal, or the hosting monitor reports an unresponsive process. This is different from a clean scheduler stop and from an immediate crash.
Capture a dump with -freezeCheck
Run with -freezeCheck while reproducing the problem. If the server remains frozen for more than five minutes, the documented check stops it and creates a dump file. Copy that dump together with the RPT and panel event before restarting. A dump tied to the same timestamp gives support staff or an administrator something more useful than a report that the server simply restarted.

Test load-related triggers
Compare a lightly populated session with a normal peak. Record whether the freeze follows a persistence save, a large player join, a particular location, a vehicle interaction or a scripted event. Remove one suspect mod or mission component and repeat the same trigger; otherwise a change in player behavior can be mistaken for a fix.

Read the external event history
Managed hosts and self-hosted service managers can stop and relaunch a healthy process. Check scheduled-task history, service-manager events, panel audit logs, watchdog thresholds and administrator actions. Compare their timestamps with the final RPT line. If the panel says it issued a stop before the process reports a crash, investigate the panel rule first.
Check resource and maintenance policies
Memory limits, disk quotas, automatic updates, host maintenance and security scans can terminate a process without leaving a DayZ error. Look for operating-system events showing resource exhaustion, a forced update or a service restart. Free disk space and verify that the profiles and persistence locations are writable.
Disable only one external rule at a time
Temporarily raise a watchdog timeout or pause a scheduled task for one controlled test, keeping the game configuration unchanged. If the restart disappears, restore the safety control with a correct threshold rather than leaving monitoring disabled. A server without a watchdog can remain unavailable indefinitely after a real hang.
Verify files and protect persistence
The official DayZ troubleshooting FAQ recommends verifying Steam files and removing launch options when diagnosing crashes. Perform file verification with the server stopped, then reapply only the documented logging parameters and test again. Do not assume verification repairs a bad serverDZ.cfg or a broken third-party mod; those remain separate variables.
Back up before destructive troubleshooting
- Copy persistence data, configuration, profiles and mod lists to a location outside the live server directory.
- Keep dated backups from before the first restart loop and from every stable baseline.
- Do not delete persistence to make a crash disappear; that can hide the trigger and risk player progress.
- Report crash dumps through the appropriate support channel when requested, because repeated crashes can put persistence at risk.
Use a controlled comparison matrix
Change one variable per restart test and record the result. The following comparisons expose patterns that a single log line cannot:

Keep a restart worksheet
For each run, record the UTC start time, command line, game/server build, mission, mod and server-mod lists, player count, final RPT line, ADM event, BattlEye event, panel action and whether the process window exited. This makes a pattern visible across days and prevents two changes from being credited with one outcome.
Define a successful test
Choose a fixed observation window based on the normal failure interval, then extend it through a representative save and player load. A server that survives one launch is not proven stable if it usually fails after an hour. Keep the same window for clean and modded comparisons.
Understand restart-policy limits
Bohemia Interactive’s public-hive hosting rules state that restarting a server more than five times per day is prohibited and that automatic restart settings in a GSP control panel may not be set below or above 12 hours. Those figures are from the documented 2018 policy context, not a universal rule for every private or community setup. Confirm the current ruleset and your provider’s terms before changing a schedule.
Policy limits do not make an unexplained crash acceptable. If a watchdog is relaunching a failed process repeatedly, fix the underlying fault and set a compliant schedule rather than disabling monitoring or adding rapid restart loops.
Prevent the next restart loop
Make logging permanent enough to be useful
Keep an explicit profiles path and the normal RPT and administration logging parameters in the production command. Reserve -netlog and -freezeCheck for periods when their extra evidence is needed, then document when they were enabled so later logs can be interpreted correctly.
Change mods deliberately
Maintain a written mod and server-mod manifest with versions and dependencies. Test updates on a copied instance first, add one change at a time, and retain the previous working set for rollback. Never update a mod during an active restart investigation unless the update itself is the variable being tested.
Monitor the outside controls
Review panel schedules, watchdog thresholds, disk space, service permissions, firewall rules and antivirus events after maintenance. A configuration that works interactively can fail under a service account or after a security-policy update.
Protect recovery options
Automate dated persistence and configuration backups, but periodically verify that a backup can actually be restored. Keep a known-good launch command and clean baseline ready so you can return players to service without deleting live data.
The shortest reliable decision path
- Record the exact restart time and identify whether the process exits, a watchdog relaunches it, or a panel schedules it.
- Launch with an explicit profiles folder and
-doLogs -adminLog -netLog; add-freezeCheckfor suspected hangs. - Copy the newest RPT, ADM, script, crash and BattlEye logs before making a change.
- If the server fails before a mission loads, validate
serverDZ.cfg, paths, permissions, launch parameters and runtime files. - Remove recent
-modand-serverModentries, then reintroduce one at a time. - Repair the Visual C++ x64 runtime when the RPT names a missing DLL or runtime error.
- For BattlEye service errors, check security exclusions and permissions, then recreate the service directory as recommended by BattlEye.
- Verify Steam files, remove stale launch options, preserve persistence and repeat the test with only one variable changed.
This sequence turns a vague restart loop into a timestamped, reproducible failure. Once the final log entry and the external event history agree, the fix is usually narrower than the symptom suggests.
