Why Your Dashcam Wears Out Its Memory Card—and How to Fix It

Loop recording wears memory cards over time. Here’s how to protect important footage, troubleshoot errors and choose a compatible high-endurance replacement.

A dashcam’s repeated recording and overwriting can wear out its microSD card over time. That is normal for a device built to record continuously, but a degrading-card warning, recording failure, or recurring card error means you should act: save important footage, format the card using the camera maker’s instructions, and replace it with a compatible high-endurance card if problems continue.

Why dashcams wear out memory cards

Dashcams write footage continuously. When loop recording fills the card, the camera overwrites older clips with new ones, so the same storage is written to again and again. Flash memory has finite write endurance; that repeated workload can eventually degrade a card. Garmin puts it plainly: “All microSD™ memory cards wear out after they are overwritten a large number of times.” (Garmin)

This wear is not, by itself, proof that the camera is faulty. But when a card becomes unreliable, recording may stop or footage may be lost. Treat warnings such as “memory card error,” “memory card is degrading,” or “SD card writing speed is too slow to record” as a reason to troubleshoot promptly. Garmin documents degrading- and slowing-card alerts, while Xiaomi has model-specific guidance for its slow-writing warning. (Garmin Support; Xiaomi Support)

What to do when an error appears

  1. Save footage you need. Copy important clips to another device before troubleshooting. Formatting removes the files stored on the card, so it is not a way to recover a lost clip.
  2. Format the card using the camera maker’s procedure. Formatting can resolve some recording and card errors. Follow the instructions for your camera rather than assuming the menus or procedure are the same across brands. VIOFO explains formatting and recommends it in its product guidance, but its advice does not establish a universal schedule for all dashcams. (VIOFO Support Center)
  3. Test whether the error returns. If recording stops again, the warning persists, or the camera reports the card is at the end of its useful life, replace the card. Garmin notes that a new card can also be defective or unsuitable for continuous high-endurance recording. (Garmin Support)

Choose a replacement the camera supports

Check the camera’s own compatibility information before buying. Supported capacity and minimum speed depend on the camera and sometimes the recording mode. For the Garmin Dash Cam models covered by its guidance, Garmin recommends quality Class 10 or higher cards; that recommendation should not be treated as a rule for every dashcam. • Ideal for dash cams and home monitoring systems
  • Designed for high endurance so you can record for up to 20,000 hours with no worries (Actual hours of video saved less. Full HD (1920x1080) video only; total hours less for 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video.)

  • Save more videos with capacities up to 256GB (1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)

For continuous recording, look for a high-endurance microSD card that the camera manufacturer identifies as compatible. Xiaomi, for example, recommends a high-endurance card of “16G C10 or above” for the specified Mi Dashcam slow-writing warning. That is model-specific guidance, not a universal capacity or speed requirement. (Xiaomi Support)

  • Confirm the camera supports the card’s capacity.
  • Meet the speed class required for your camera’s recording mode.
  • Prefer a model identified as suitable for high-endurance or continuous recording.
  • Do not assume a particular brand or card will last a fixed number of months or years; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a comparable lifespan across models.

Reduce unnecessary recording and repeated overwrites

A larger supported card is overwritten less often and usually lasts longer, according to Garmin. If the dashcam is not connected to ignition-switched power, check whether it keeps recording when the vehicle is off. Garmin advises turning off some cameras between uses in that situation to avoid unnecessary recording. If parking recording is intended, review the camera’s power and recording settings so you understand when it is writing footage. (Garmin)
