When the EA loads again, those ordinary program variables can return to their startup values. The remedy is to save and restore the day identifier, baseline, and breached status—and clear the lock only when the broker or funding firm’s actual reset boundary arrives. The exact fix depends on the EA’s code, whether you use MT4 or MT5, and the account’s loss-limit rules.
Why the limit can reset after a restart
An EA’s state and your trading account’s state are separate. The broker holds open positions, which remain available to the platform after a restart. But an EA’s counters and flags—such as “losses today,” “baseline at start of day,” or “limit breached”—can be ordinary variables in the running program. Reloading the EA initializes those variables again unless the code saves and restores them.

That is the likely explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis of your particular EA. You would need to inspect its source or configuration to see whether it uses ordinary variables, terminal global variables, or a file, and whether its startup code overwrites saved values.

What state the EA needs to preserve
For a restart-safe daily guard, the EA generally needs to persist three things:

- The trading-day identifier used to decide which daily period the state belongs to.
- The baseline against which the loss limit is calculated, such as the relevant opening balance or equity under the account’s rules.
- The breach or lock status, so a restart during the same trading day does not re-enable trading.
On startup, the EA should load those values before its order logic can run. If the saved day is still the current applicable trading day, it should retain the baseline and any lock. It should create a new baseline and clear the daily lock only after the relevant reset boundary has passed. Saving values but then unconditionally setting a fresh baseline or clearing the lock during initialization still causes a reset.
How MetaTrader can retain EA state
In MetaTrader 5, terminal global variables are distinct from ordinary variables declared in EA source code. MetaQuotes documents that terminal global variables persist between platform starts and can be shared by programs in the terminal. They hold numeric values, so they can suit a compact day stamp, baseline, and status flag. Their namespace is shared, so use distinctive names that identify the account and strategy; otherwise, programs could overwrite one another. For a related set of fields that should be saved as one record, a local state file is another approach. An MQL5 implementation article describes saving and restoring structured EA state with binary file operations. That is a design pattern, not evidence that your EA already uses it or that a particular patch will fit your code. See MQL5 Articles.
Make the reset match the account’s rules
“Daily loss” is not one universal formula. Before changing code, establish the governing account rule and make the EA calculate the same period and P&L measure.

- Reset boundary: Broker server midnight is used in one MQL5 circuit-breaker example, but it is not automatically the right boundary for every account. A funding firm’s documented reset time takes precedence where applicable; local midnight and server time may differ. See the MQL5 circuit-breaker example, published 28 August 2026.
- Baseline: Determine whether the rule starts from balance, equity, or another specified value. Preserve that baseline for the whole relevant day rather than recalculating it after every balance change. A prop-firm risk-layer example illustrates saving a day stamp and opening balance and cautions that rollover conventions must be checked against the firm’s rules. - P&L included: Balance reflects closed results, while equity also reflects floating P&L. Confirm how the account treats open-position losses, swap, commission, and positions held across rollover. The cited circuit-breaker example checks realized and floating P&L including swap; that is its implementation, not a universal account rule.
- Other balance changes: Check how the rule treats deposits, withdrawals, and any other adjustment that might affect the baseline or measured loss.
Check whether the lock covers all trading
A halt flag inside one EA can block only the order paths that consult that flag. It does not automatically stop unrelated EAs on other charts or manual orders placed through the terminal. A shared terminal variable can coordinate EAs that are deliberately written to check it, but it cannot intercept a manual order. Account-wide enforcement requires every relevant automated strategy to honor the same lock and use consistent day-boundary and P&L rules; manual trading needs a separate control.
Troubleshoot the restart reset safely
- Reproduce it away from a live account. Use a demo account or Strategy Tester. Record the daily limit, baseline, and lock status before and after restarting.
- Identify how the EA stores state. Inspect the source, if available, for ordinary global-scope variables, terminal global-variable functions such as
GlobalVariableSetandGlobalVariableGet, or file operations. In MQL5, source-level ordinary variables and terminal global variables are different features. - Inspect startup logic. Look for initialization code that always takes the current balance or equity as a new baseline, resets a counter, or clears the breached flag. Any of these can erase same-day state, even when a saved value exists.
- Restore before enabling orders. Save and load the day identifier, baseline, and lock status using a unique key or filename for the account and strategy. Keep valid same-day values; initialize a new day only when the applicable boundary has arrived.
- Test the relevant reloads. Check an intraday terminal restart, chart reload, EA reattachment, and a restart after the true day rollover. Confirm that the first three preserve the same-day state and that the rollover changes it only when expected.
- Test the account’s loss formula. Check closed losses, floating losses, swap or commission, and overnight positions according to the documented rule.
- Check every order source. If several EAs trade the account, verify that each one checks the shared lock. Do not treat a single-chart EA as account-wide protection.
When you cannot change the EA
If the EA is closed-source, check its documentation or ask its developer whether daily state survives terminal restarts, which time zone defines its day, and whether the lock applies to the whole account or only that EA’s trades. Until you can verify those points, do not rely on a guard that visibly clears after a restart as account-wide protection.
