Why Your Config Setting Was Ignored—and How to Catch the Typo

A misspelled configuration key can load without changing the setting you intended. Learn how go-tool-base validates keys, handles unknowns, and separates defaults from validation.

A configuration file can parse without errors and still leave a setting unapplied: a misspelled key such as tiemout may be accepted by the surrounding stack but never match the application’s expected timeout key. The fix is to validate loaded configuration against an explicit schema, then decide whether unknown keys should warn or fail.

Why a misspelled key can appear to work

Parsing answers whether a file is syntactically readable. It does not necessarily answer whether every key in that file is known to the application. If a tool expects timeout but receives tiemout, the file may load successfully while the intended timeout remains unchanged.

Matt Cockayne describes encountering this kind of failure in his article, published March 27, 2026. The typo is an example from his experience, not a measured estimate of how often configuration errors occur. The practical lesson is that a successful load is not proof that the application understood every setting.

Make the expected configuration explicit

In the Go example, the expected keys and constraints are represented by a struct. Tags identify configuration names and validation rules; go-tool-base can derive a schema from that struct and use it to validate loaded values. This is a specific library approach, not a claim about the behavior of every Go configuration loader.

type ServerConfig struct {
    Host string `config:"host" validate:"required"`
    Port int    `config:"port" validate:"required"`
    Format string `config:"format" enum:"text,json" default:"text"`
}

The example uses config tags to map fields to keys, validate to express requirements, enum to restrict accepted values, and default to document a default associated with the field. The package reference documents these tag types and schema construction with NewSchema(config.WithStructSchema(AppConfig{})), followed by validation of a configuration container: go-tool-base config package reference.

Choose how unknown keys should be handled

With go-tool-base, unknown keys produce warnings by default; enabling WithStrictMode() makes them errors instead. That distinction matters when a file may contain settings owned by more than one tool: treating every unfamiliar key as fatal can block a legitimate shared configuration file.

Policy Effect When it may fit
Warnings (default in the documented approach) Reports unfamiliar keys without making them validation errors. When other tools may legitimately add keys to the same file, or when you want to surface typos without immediately blocking use.
Strict mode Unknown keys become errors rather than warnings. When the application owns the configuration surface and an unrecognized key should prevent the configuration from being accepted.

These are policy choices documented for go-tool-base, not universal defaults. The right level of strictness depends on who owns the file and how costly it is for a bad key to go unnoticed.

Keep default merging separate from validation

Validation checks whether loaded values fit the schema; it does not inject missing values from defaults. In Cockayne’s design, defaults are merged first and validation runs afterward. A default tag can supply documentation or an error hint, but validation itself does not fill in the value.

  1. Load the configuration sources used by the application.
  2. Merge the application’s defaults into the loaded configuration.
  3. Validate the resulting values against the schema.
  4. Report warnings or errors according to the chosen unknown-key policy.

Keeping those operations distinct makes failures easier to interpret: a missing value is not silently repaired by a validation step, while an unfamiliar key can be reported as such.

Make validation failures actionable

A useful diagnostic tells the reader which key failed and what to do next. The package reference describes a ValidationError with a key, message, and hint, and validation results that distinguish errors from warnings. For example, the companion tutorial demonstrates failures for a missing required field and an enum value outside the accepted set, with messages naming the relevant key and explaining the requirement: package reference and configuration validation tutorial.

For a typo like tiemout, identifying the unknown key lets someone correct it to timeout instead of assuming the setting was applied. Whether the warning should stop execution is a separate policy decision.
