If your error tracker reports only Script error., a JavaScript error probably happened—but the browser withheld its details from the page because the script came from another origin. The usual fix is to add crossorigin="anonymous" to the script element and configure the script server to allow the cross-origin request with an appropriate CORS response header. The attribute alone is not enough.
What “Script error.” actually means
Script error. is a limited report, not proof that nothing went wrong. A script loaded from a different origin can run on your page, but browsers restrict the error details that the page’s handler can read. An origin differs if the hostname, protocol, or port differs; a script served by a CDN can therefore be cross-origin even when it belongs to your application.

As Sentry author Ben Vinegar explained, “This isn’t a JavaScript bug – browsers intentionally hide errors originating from script files from different origins for security reasons.” The restriction protects information that a script might otherwise expose to an unrelated site. Browser behavior can vary, so treat the generic message as a clue rather than assuming every browser reports every cross-origin failure identically. Sentry’s explanation of “Script error.”

Two pieces must agree: the HTML that loads the script and the response from the server hosting it. For example:

<script src="https://cdn.example.com/app.js" crossorigin="anonymous"></script>Then configure the script host to return an appropriate Access-Control-Allow-Origin response header for the page’s origin. The header must be present on the script response; adding the HTML attribute does not make a server permit the request. If you do not control the script host, ask its operator whether it supports this configuration or serve a copy from infrastructure you control, subject to the script’s license and update requirements.
- Identify the script that failed and check whether its protocol, hostname, or port differs from the page.
- Add
crossorigin="anonymous"to that script element. - Check the script response for an
Access-Control-Allow-Originheader that permits the page’s origin. - Reproduce the failure and inspect the browser’s error report again.
When the configuration is correct, the browser can expose more of the normal error information to the page’s handler. It does not guarantee that every error will produce a usable stack trace: source maps, minification, browser behavior, and the particular failure can affect what you can diagnose.

Why window.onerror may still look empty
The window.onerror property handler can receive a message, source URL, line number, column number, and error object. For a cross-origin failure, those details may be generic or unavailable because of the same browser restriction. Capturing the handler is not a way to bypass it. MDN documents the handler’s arguments and the error event: Window: error event.
Also distinguish ordinary script errors from rejected promises. The Window error event is used for synchronous script errors; an unhandled rejected promise—including an uncaught throw in an async function—uses the separate unhandledrejection event. If your monitoring only listens for window.onerror, check whether it also reports unhandled promise rejections.

When an error-monitoring SDK helps
An error-monitoring SDK can instrument an application, collect reports, and add diagnostic context. It can make reporting more useful, but it cannot override browser security restrictions or make a cross-origin server expose details it has not permitted. Fix script and server CORS configuration where possible, then evaluate monitoring for the reporting needs that remain. Sentry’s current guidance discusses window.onerror and SDK-based reporting: Capture and report JavaScript errors with window.onerror.

- Check whether the SDK captures both synchronous errors and unhandled promise rejections.
- Verify how it handles your framework, browsers, and source maps in its current documentation.
- Review what diagnostic data it collects and how that data is handled.
