If your Android phone won’t recognize a photo stick, first check whether the phone has detected it but you’re looking in the wrong app. Open Files by Google and look for the drive under Storage devices. If it does not appear there, check the connector and data-capable adapter, confirm your exact phone supports USB host/OTG, and test the stick on another device. Don’t format it unless your photos are backed up and verified elsewhere.
First check whether the phone detected the stick
- Unlock the phone and connect the photo stick.
- Open Files by Google. If Android shows a USB available notification, tap it and allow access.
- In Files by Google, look under Storage devices for the USB drive. Google’s instructions cover USB storage on Android 7.0 (Nougat) and later. Google’s guide to using USB storage with Files by Google
- If the notification does not open, remove the stick and reconnect it once.
If the drive appears in Files by Google but not in Google Photos or your phone’s Gallery app, the storage may be working normally: those apps are not the place to browse the drive itself. Open the USB storage in Files by Google and select the image files there. Google says Files by Google can also copy, move, delete, and rename files on USB storage, so take care not to choose a destructive action by mistake.

Check the plug, adapter, and data connection
Compare the photo stick’s connector with the phone’s port. For example, a Type-A stick cannot plug directly into a Type-C port; it needs a suitable OTG adapter. Samsung’s instructions for Galaxy phones and tablets specify a Type-A-to-Type-C OTG adapter when the flash drive does not have a Type-C connector. An adapter or cable may fit physically but fail to carry data. Try another known data-capable adapter or connection if you have one. Android Help notes that not all USB cables transfer files and recommends trying another cable for USB transfer problems; direct USB-host accessory use still depends on the phone and setup. An adapter only changes the connector; it does not add USB host/OTG support to a phone that lacks it. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact phone model before buying or troubleshooting accessories.
Confirm phone and drive compatibility
Android phones do not all support the same USB accessories, and a connector match alone does not establish compatibility. Check your phone manufacturer’s documentation for USB host or OTG support, then check the phone and photo-stick manufacturers’ specifications for supported drive formats, capacity, and power requirements. There is no single file-system format or capacity limit established for all Android phones and photo sticks. If the phone shows a format or capacity warning, stop before accepting an erase or format prompt. Look up compatibility for the exact models rather than assuming one format works everywhere.

Restart and update
If the connector and support checks look right but Files by Google still does not show the drive, restart the phone and install any available system updates. Android Help includes restarting and updating among its USB-transfer troubleshooting steps. Settings names and locations vary by phone maker and Android version; use your manufacturer’s instructions if you need help finding system updates. Android Help: USB troubleshooting

Test without risking the photos
Try the photo stick on a computer or another phone known to support USB storage. If another device can read it, copy the photos somewhere safe and verify that the copies open before attempting any repair. If the stick fails on multiple compatible devices, the drive or its data may be damaged; consider recovery options before taking actions that could overwrite it.
Do not format the stick as a first troubleshooting step. Formatting risks erasing its contents, and it is not a safe way to find out whether the photos are recoverable. Keep the originals untouched until you have a verified backup.

What to check before replacing an adapter or photo stick
- Does the connector match your phone, or do you need a Type-A-to-Type-C OTG adapter?
- Does the exact phone model support USB host/OTG?
- Is the adapter or cable capable of data transfer, not just charging?
- Can another compatible device read the stick, and are the photos backed up?
- Do the phone and drive manufacturers document support for the drive’s format, capacity, and power needs?
These checks narrow down whether the issue is the phone, connection, or stick without treating a replacement accessory as a universal fix.
