If you want your Android phone to type on a computer, TV, tablet, or another phone, the problem may be that the phone cannot act as a Bluetooth keyboard. That requires the phone to support the Bluetooth HID Device role, and the device receiving the input must accept Bluetooth HID keyboards. Android includes an API for this role, but that does not guarantee support on every phone or firmware version.
If you meant that a separate Bluetooth keyboard should type on your Android phone, that is the opposite connection direction and uses Android’s normal keyboard-pairing settings.

First, check which device should be doing the typing
- External keyboard types on the Android phone: Put the keyboard in pairing mode, then on the phone open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device and select the keyboard. Google notes that some instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. Google’s physical-keyboard pairing instructions cover this direction.
- Android phone types on another device: The phone must act as a Bluetooth HID device, or peripheral. Seeing the target device in the phone’s Bluetooth list does not prove the phone can perform this role.
Why a phone may not work as a Bluetooth keyboard
Bluetooth pairing alone is not enough. Android’s BluetoothHidDevice API has been available since API level 28, but the exact phone’s firmware and the app being used must expose and activate the HID Device role. Android’s API reference states: “Connections to HID Device are only possible when application is registered.”
The receiving device matters as well: the computer, TV, tablet, or other phone must accept Bluetooth HID keyboard connections. App publishers describe both conditions as necessary, and note that HID peripheral availability can depend on phone firmware. These are compatibility disclosures, not a guarantee for every model.

Check these requirements before retrying pairing
- Check the exact phone and software. Consult the app’s compatibility guidance for your phone model and Android or firmware version. Support varies, and Android API availability alone does not establish that a manufacturer’s firmware exposes the role.
- Check the receiver. Verify that the target device can receive Bluetooth HID keyboard input. A device’s general Bluetooth support does not necessarily mean it accepts this profile.
- Enable or register HID in the phone app. Open the selected app and follow its instructions to register or enable the HID function. Android says an app must be registered before HID connections are possible.
- Grant the requested Bluetooth permission. For relevant HID operations, Android documents the
BLUETOOTH_CONNECTpermission requirement for apps targeting Android 12 (API 31) or later. Follow the app’s permission prompts and current instructions. - Pair from the receiving device if the app instructs you to. For example, the Bluetooth Keyboard Controller listing describes registering HID in the phone app and then choosing the advertised phone from the target’s Bluetooth settings. The exact steps and device name vary by app.
If it still will not connect
The app says the phone lacks HID support
If the app reports that the phone does not offer the HID Device role, repeated pairing attempts cannot add missing firmware support. Check the app’s compatibility notes for your exact model and software version; do not infer compatibility from the phone’s ability to connect to other Bluetooth devices.
The devices may have an old pairing saved
If the app or device instructions point to stale pairing state, remove the old pairing from both devices and try the prescribed setup again. There is no single reset sequence established for every Android build, so use the steps for your app and receiver rather than applying a generic reset.

It pairs, then disconnects
Investigate compatibility between the phone’s firmware, the HID app, and the target operating system. Cordless’s Google Play listing reports a pairing caveat for some Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO phones; that is the publisher’s device-specific statement, not evidence that all phones from those brands are affected.

When a physical keyboard is the practical alternative
If the phone cannot act as an HID device, use an Android-compatible physical Bluetooth keyboard when your goal is to enter text on the phone. Pair it through Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, as described in Google’s instructions. This lets the keyboard type on the phone; it does not make the phone itself a keyboard for another device.
