A “Bluetooth keyboard app” may turn an Android phone into a keyboard for a computer, or help configure a physical keyboard already paired with Android. Those are different jobs: Android’s built-in settings handle pairing and layout for a physical keyboard, while apps such as KeyCast advertise sending keyboard input from a phone to another device.
Choose the right kind of Bluetooth keyboard app
Decide whether you want to type on an Android device using a separate keyboard, or use the Android phone as a keyboard for another device.

| Option | Direction of input | What to check | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone acting as a keyboard | The phone sends keystrokes to a computer or other receiving device. | Android version, receiving-device operating system, Bluetooth/HID support, and any activation or internet requirements. | Temporary or backup control of a computer from a phone. |
| Physical keyboard paired with Android | A separate keyboard sends keystrokes to the Android device. | Pairing support, Android settings menus, and keyboard layout. | Typing on an Android tablet or phone with a hardware keyboard. |
| Physical-keyboard layout utility | The hardware keyboard sends input to Android; the app provides an input method or alternate layout. | Supported hardware and layouts, current app availability, and whether you need to enable or select an input method. | A layout or behavior that Android’s built-in settings do not provide. |
For example, the Google Play listing for KeyCast describes the phone-as-keyboard use. External Keyboard Helper Pro describes an input method for hardware Bluetooth and USB keyboards. Check each current listing; their functions are not interchangeable.

Check compatibility on both ends
A phone-as-keyboard app must work with both the Android phone and the device receiving its Bluetooth input. Read the listing for its minimum Android version and supported receiving devices or operating systems rather than assuming one app’s requirements apply to all.

Android version and receiving device
KeyCast’s Google Play listing, updated June 27, 2026, says it requires Android 9.0 or higher and a Bluetooth-enabled computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux. Those are KeyCast-specific requirements, not universal requirements for Bluetooth keyboard apps.
Bluetooth HID and manufacturer restrictions
Bluetooth HID is the profile used for human-interface devices such as keyboards. The Fulwerks Bluetooth Keyboard listing, updated September 2, 2026, warns that some manufacturers block or disable Bluetooth HID on custom Android builds. If the phone cannot expose the required profile, an app that relies on it may not work. Look for the exact phone model in the app’s compatibility information or ask the developer before installing.

Look for extra dependencies before you install
Read the app listing for conditions that could make it inconvenient or unusable in your situation. KeyCast’s listing says an internet connection is required for license verification and that activation uses an access code. That matters if you need offline use; it does not establish the licensing model of other apps.

Review permissions, privacy disclosures, and safety warnings
Match permissions to the advertised feature
Google Play policy says sensitive permissions and APIs should be necessary for an app’s core functionality and used for user-consented purposes. If a keyboard utility requests access that does not make sense for its stated job, pause and look for the developer’s explanation. Accessibility access merits particular scrutiny: Google Play’s permissions and APIs guidance describes disclosure and consent requirements for many non-disability uses and says narrower APIs should be preferred when possible.
Read Data safety and the privacy policy
Android’s privacy and permissions guidance explains that the Google Play Data safety section provides information about data an app may access and use. Read that section alongside the app’s privacy policy. These are disclosures supplied through the listing, not independent proof that the app’s behavior has been audited; the example apps’ statements may also change.

Take Play Protect warnings seriously, without treating them as a guarantee
Google’s Play Protect warning guidance describes scanning and warnings, including warnings related to harmful apps and sensitive permissions. Pay attention to a warning and follow the information it provides. The absence of a warning does not guarantee that an app is safe or private.
Try Android’s built-in settings for a physical keyboard
If your goal is to type on an Android tablet or phone with a separate Bluetooth keyboard, try the system pairing and layout settings before looking for an app. Google’s physical keyboard instructions say to put the keyboard in pairing mode, then open Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device. To check layout options, use Settings → System → Keyboard → Physical keyboard.
- Put the physical keyboard into pairing mode.
- On Android, open Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device and select the keyboard when it appears.
- To adjust its layout, open Settings → System → Keyboard → Physical keyboard.
Google notes that some steps work only on Android 14 and later, and manufacturers may arrange menus differently. If your device’s settings do not match these paths, look for the equivalent pairing and physical-keyboard options in its Settings app.
