An AirTag does not send a continuously refreshed GPS position. Find My updates its location when the AirTag is detected through Apple’s Find My network; until another report arrives, the map can show an older location and the time it was last found. That timestamp tells you the age of the latest report—not necessarily where the AirTag is now.
Why an AirTag location can be old
An AirTag relies on nearby Apple devices to help report its approximate location. Using Bluetooth, a nearby device in the Find My network can detect the AirTag and relay a location to its owner. Apple says, “The item’s location is updated when it connects to the Find My network.” Apple’s Find My guide explains how to view an item’s location.

Because an update depends on a detection and report, Find My may continue to display the previous report while it has no newer one. The AirTag is not independently transmitting a live GPS or cellular position, and Apple does not specify a universal refresh interval or guarantee that a new location will appear within a particular number of minutes or hours.

A location with a recent or older time
In Find My, open Items and select the AirTag to see its reported location and timestamp. The time indicates when that location was last reported. If it is old, it does not confirm the AirTag is still there—or prove that the AirTag is broken, out of battery, or affected by a particular setting.

“No location found”
Apple says a last known location may remain visible for up to seven days. More than seven days after the last Find My network report, Find My displays “No location found” rather than the old location. This is different from an old timestamp that still accompanies a location. See Apple’s explanation of Find My location states.
“Not sharing location • Online”
This status means the item is online but cannot send its location, according to Apple. It is distinct from a map pin showing an older last-known report.

What to do if the location is not updating

Open Find My, tap Items, then select the AirTag. Check the displayed location and its timestamp to determine whether you are seeing an older report or an explicit status such as “No location found.”

If Find My cannot locate the AirTag, turn on Notify When Found for the item and make sure Find My notifications are allowed. Apple says you can be notified when the item is located again; this does not make the AirTag update on a fixed schedule.

Check Find My again when a new report may have arrived. Without a new detection by the network, the previous location may remain the latest one available.
The cited Apple guidance does not establish that a particular delay means the battery is dead, the AirTag is defective, or a specific setting is wrong. A stale location by itself cannot identify the cause.

It is not the same as the explicit “No location found” or “Not sharing location • Online” status.
For privacy, Apple says Find My network accessories use frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers and that the network uses end-to-end encryption. Apple also provides unwanted-tracking alerts and advises against tracking people without consent. Details are in Apple’s guidance on unwanted tracking alerts.
