Syncing your phone with a rental car can leave personal information in the car’s infotainment system after you return it. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says that information may include saved destinations, phone numbers, call and message logs, contacts, and texts. Not every car stores all of these, but if you want to avoid leaving data behind, don’t pair your phone—or remove it before returning the vehicle.
What can a rental car retain?
Depending on the vehicle and the connection, its infotainment system may save information such as GPS destinations, phone numbers, call and message logs, contacts, and text messages. The FTC warns that future renters or rental-company employees may be able to see information left in the system. That is a potential exposure, not evidence that every car retains every data type or that anyone has accessed it. FTC consumer guidance on renting a car explains the risks.

Because the car is temporary and another renter may use it later, pairing adds a cleanup step: you need to remove your device entry before handing the car back. The FTC advises renters not to assume that personal information will be deleted automatically.

Choose between avoiding pairing and pairing selectively

Charge without connecting to the infotainment USB port
A car’s USB port may transfer data as well as supply power. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Avoid connecting your phone or device to the infotainment system just for charging.” For charging, it recommends using a cigarette-lighter adapter with a compatible USB cable instead. This is an alternative to the infotainment USB connection, not a guarantee against every kind of data sharing. See the FTC’s charging guidance.
If you pair, grant only the permissions you need
Read the vehicle’s permission prompts and approve access only when it is needed for the feature you intend to use. For example, the FTC says contact access is not necessary for music playback. Declining unnecessary permissions can limit what the infotainment system can access, though the exact prompts and available controls differ among cars.

Remove your phone before returning the car
- Open the vehicle’s infotainment system settings.
- Find the list of paired or connected devices.
- Select your phone and follow the prompts to delete or remove it.
- If the deletion option is unclear or unavailable, check the owner’s manual or ask the rental company for help.
These are general directions, not a universal button sequence: the settings labels and menus vary by vehicle. At an FTC workshop on June 28, 2017, staff discussed advising rental companies to establish procedures for deleting renter information at return.
