To judge a projection, check whether the listing matches the player’s availability and actual snaps, routes and targets, then account for team passing volume, teammates, matchup and your league’s scoring rules.
What a depth-chart spot tells you—and what it doesn’t
A depth chart shows a team’s listed hierarchy at a particular time. It can help estimate a receiver’s role, especially before meaningful game data is available or after a role change. But a label such as WR1 or WR2 is not a count of snaps, routes or targets, and it does not guarantee a particular share of the offense.

Projection approaches vary. GameDay Analytics describes using a range of player-usage and context features, while Fantasy Football Targets describes a model that considers availability and opportunity before estimating efficiency. These are examples of provider-specific methods, not a universal formula. Neither establishes a fixed fantasy-points increase for moving up one place on a depth chart.

A useful way to understand a projection is to follow the steps from playing status to fantasy scoring. One disclosed methodology from Fantasy Football Targets describes an availability and opportunity stage, followed by efficiency rates regressed toward positional averages. Projection providers do not all disclose the same inputs or weights.

- Estimate availability. Account for whether the receiver is expected to play and any relevant injury designation.
- Estimate team opportunities. Consider how often the offense is likely to pass and how many receiving opportunities may be available.
- Estimate the player’s share. Use the depth chart as context, then weigh evidence of how the player is actually being used.
- Estimate production. Convert expected targets into catches, receiving yards and touchdowns using assumptions about efficiency.
- Apply league scoring. The same projected stat line can produce different fantasy totals under different scoring rules.
Published totals are therefore provider-, week- and scoring-context dependent. NFL Fantasy’s projection pages show projected receiving statistics and fantasy points and say that projections reflect news, injury updates and trends. A projection is an estimate, not a promise of production.
Which usage measures to check
Several statistics describe different parts of a receiver’s opportunity. They should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Route participation | How often the receiver runs a route on relevant dropbacks. | Helps distinguish a receiver who is actively running routes from one who is merely present for offensive snaps. NFL Next Gen Stats says route participation can illuminate strategy and tendencies at league, team and individual levels. |
| Target share | The receiver’s share of team targets. | Offers evidence of receiving opportunities earned, rather than just the player’s listed place on the depth chart. |
| Air-yards share | The receiver’s share of the team’s intended passing yardage. | Helps distinguish target volume from target depth; it does not by itself predict whether those passes will be completed. |
| Vacated usage | Opportunities associated with teammates who are unavailable. | Consider how routes and targets might be redistributed, but do not assume one receiver inherits all of them or that the remaining players divide them equally. |
These measures provide evidence for assessing a role, not a guarantee that every projection provider uses each one. NFL Next Gen Stats has also described a wideout route-recognition model trained on more than 100,000 routes; that is a model-training count, not evidence that depth-chart position causes fantasy production.

How to reassess a receiver when a starter is injured
A starter’s absence can create opportunity, but the replacement’s listed promotion is only the starting point. Check the availability update and the player’s recent usage, then consider how the offense may allocate the missing routes and targets.
- Confirm the news and its timing. Check the receiver’s current availability and whether the depth chart is newly updated. A chart can lag behind injury news or a change in role.
- Look at recent snaps and routes. A player who has already been on the field and running routes may have a clearer path to expanded use than someone whose promotion exists only on paper. Treat a small sample cautiously.
- Check targets and air yards. Target share helps assess receiving opportunity; air-yards share adds context about the depth of those targets.
- Assess the redistribution. Vacated routes and targets may be spread among several receivers or absorbed in another way. Do not assign all of a missing player’s production to the next name on the chart.
- Revisit team and game context. Passing volume, other available receivers, opponent and game conditions can all affect opportunity. A chart change alone does not explain every projection movement.
- Compare the right projection. Make sure you are comparing the same week and scoring format, and treat projection pages as estimates rather than ground truth.
A nominal WR2 can be a better fantasy option than a nominal WR1 in another offense or scoring setup if their routes and targets differ. That is a comparison framework, not a guaranteed result.

Depth charts, injuries and projections can change from week to week. Sportradar documents a weekly depth-chart API endpoint, showing that chart data is available on a weekly basis; that does not mean every team publishes a definitive chart or that the endpoint is freely available. Check the chart’s team, date and week before treating a listing as current.

Also check what kind of chart you are viewing. ESPN’s surfaced 2026 team-depth-chart PDF is a fantasy-oriented editorial chart, not an official team depth chart; it says its chart positions are based on fantasy value. Its rankings should not be confused with a team’s own depth chart or a live guarantee of playing time.
For a decision, compare the chart listing with current availability and recent usage, then view a projection for the relevant week and scoring format. NFL Fantasy offers projection pages with weekly and season views, and its draft kit includes receiver tiers and opportunity-focused resources. A projection page can help organize an estimate, but it cannot remove uncertainty about role, health or game conditions.
