Why You Shouldn’t Judge a Google Search Update During Its Rollout

Don’t draw a verdict from an active Google core update. Confirm its end date, wait a full week, then compare Search Console pages, queries, and relevant search types.

Don’t treat ranking or traffic changes during an active Google core update as the settled result. Check the Google Search Status Dashboard for the update’s completion date, then wait at least one full week before analyzing Search Console. Compare the week after that wait with the week before rollout began, and inspect pages, queries, and relevant search types—not only sitewide clicks.

Why early rollout readings can mislead

A rollout is a period of change, not a final verdict on how a site performs after the update. Google says complex updates may involve more fluctuations as ranking systems are updated and reinforce one another. Google’s March 2024 announcement, for example, said that particular complex rollout could take up to a month; that timing applies to that update, not to future rollouts. Core updates are broad changes, not actions aimed at a specific site or individual page. Search results also change as the web and people’s expectations change. So a movement that happens during a rollout may be temporary, may reflect other changes, or may have no direct connection to the update.

Google says it updates Search thousands of times per year, but that does not mean thousands of major, publicly announced updates. Google shares changes it considers notable, not every small or incremental change. Google’s Q&A on Search updates

When to check performance after a core update

Google recommends waiting at least one full week after a core update completes before analyzing Search Console data. This is a recommended comparison window, not a guarantee that every site’s performance has stabilized. Google Search’s core update guidance

Confirm the completion date

Open the Google Search Status Dashboard and find the relevant ranking update. Record its announced start and completion dates. The Dashboard reports system status and notable updates; it does not diagnose an individual site. An issue affecting only a limited number of sites or searchers may not appear there.

Choose comparable date ranges

After the recommended week has passed, compare that post-completion week with the week before rollout began. Keep the ranges comparable and use Search Console to examine more than the sitewide total. This method helps organize the comparison; it cannot prove that the update caused a change.

How to assess what changed

Check pages and queries

Review the site’s leading pages and queries to see whether a change is broad or concentrated in particular parts of the site. A total alone can conceal different patterns—for example, losses on some pages alongside gains on others.

Separate search types when relevant

Review Web Search separately from Images, Video, or News when those surfaces matter to your site. A movement in one type can be obscured by aggregate reporting across the others.

Distinguish a small movement from a large decline

Google illustrates a small position change with a move from 2 to 4 and a large one with a move from 4 to 29. Those are examples, not universal thresholds or evidence that a particular action will improve rankings. Google advises against drastic changes in response to a small shift and recommends a deeper assessment after a large decline. Google’s core update guidance

Could the update have caused a traffic drop?

Timing alone does not establish cause. Google’s traffic-drop guidance lists several possibilities, including algorithmic changes, technical problems, security issues, and data anomalies. A coincident update is a useful clue to investigate, but it is not a diagnosis. Google’s guide to debugging Search traffic drops

The Status Dashboard can confirm that Google reported a notable rollout and when it ended. Search Console is where you examine your site’s performance. Neither fact alone proves why a particular site gained or lost traffic.

What to do after the comparison

If the movement is small

Avoid drastic changes based only on a modest position shift. Continue monitoring performance and consider the affected pages and queries in context rather than reacting to a single early reading.

If the decline is large and sustained

Assess the site overall for helpful, reliable, people-first content, as Google recommends. Also investigate other plausible causes, including technical and security problems, rather than assuming the update is responsible. Google says improvements can take several days or several months to affect results, and it does not guarantee a noticeable impact from changes. That variable improvement period is separate from the update’s rollout window. Google’s core update guidance Google’s traffic-drop guidance
