If a carrier gives you a scan time without a UTC offset or time-zone context, keep it as the carrier reported it. The value describes a wall-clock reading, not a uniquely identifiable instant, so you cannot safely convert it to the viewer’s local time. Store it separately from timestamps that include enough information to identify an instant.
What an offset-free scan time tells you
A value such as 2026-07-20 21:49:00 gives a date and a clock reading, but without a UTC offset or known time zone it does not identify one point on the global timeline. It may reflect the clock at the scan location, but the digits alone do not establish that location’s time zone or the corresponding UTC time. Treat it as a wall-clock value and preserve the carrier’s original text.

By contrast, a timestamp with a known offset supplies a basis for conversion. Keep those two kinds of data distinct: a known instant can be rendered in a viewer’s time zone; an offset-free reading cannot be converted reliably without additional evidence.

Parsing a string does not resolve missing time-zone information in a consistent way. The ECMAScript specification says that date-only forms without an offset are interpreted as UTC, while date-time forms without an offset are interpreted as local time. Strings outside the specified date-time format may be handled through implementation-specific parsing behavior. Read the ECMAScript date parsing rules.

- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
That distinction means a generic Date parser can assign a time-zone interpretation that the carrier never supplied. Do not add a Z or an invented offset to make parsing convenient: doing so changes the meaning of the source data rather than recovering missing information.
Model the source value and its meaning separately
Preserve the original carrier value, then record what kind of value it is. A data model should be able to distinguish an offset-bearing instant from an offset-free wall-clock reading and from a date-only value. Keep carrier and scan-location context alongside it where available.

- Offset-bearing timestamp: preserve the supplied offset and use it as the basis for converting a known instant.
- Offset-free date and time: retain the original reading as a wall-clock value; do not infer UTC or the viewer’s zone.
- Date only: retain the fact that the carrier supplied no clock. Do not let parsing manufacture midnight.
Parse carrier formats deliberately rather than assuming every provider uses the same shape. 24hTrack reports seeing both YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS and values such as July 20, 2026 9:00 PM on its platform. A parser or regular expression that recognizes only one form can misclassify the other. This is a platform observation, not a claim that all carriers use these formats. 24hTrack’s explanation of carrier scan timestamps.
Display what the carrier reported
For an offset-free scan, show the carrier’s clock reading without localizing it to the viewer’s time zone. Where it helps prevent confusion, label it as the carrier’s reported time and show the scan location. When the source gives only a date, display only the date.

Location can change what a customer should do next. A delivered scan at a depot, locker, or access point may call for a different check than a delivery at the customer’s address. Give the scan location enough prominence to support that decision instead of letting an ambiguous hour dominate the interface.

An evening hour is not, by itself, evidence that a delivery record is wrong. 24hTrack’s 2026 article describes observations from approximately 27,000 recent delivery events on its own platform: about 96% of its sample’s delivery scans included a time of day, while roughly 4% were date-only. The article also reports that about 9%—roughly one in 11—of deliveries in that sample occurred between 20:00 and 05:59. These are platform-specific observations, not universal delivery rates, and the article’s figures have not been independently audited.

The same article says its initial estimate of clock-bearing scans was about 72% before it accounted for 12-hour clock strings missed by its first pass. That correction illustrates why format coverage matters; it is not an additional dataset. The article reports that roughly 8–9% of its sample’s deliveries occurred per hour during the late-morning to mid-afternoon busiest window, which likewise should not be generalized to other carriers, routes, or seasons.
24hTrack quotes a support message describing a scan shown at 21:49 and seen by the customer at 6:04 am, with the customer saying the parcel had not arrived at their home. An interface should not assume that a displayed hour has been localized—or that a delivery scan means delivery to the customer’s address—without checking the scan’s location and time semantics.
