The images are not assembled into a planned plot; the panel format encourages people to imagine connections and stories for themselves.
How does the Raspberry Pi robot print comic strips?
The documented build splits the work between two programs. A Processing sketch generates the comic, while a Python script handles the button, LEDs, communication with the sketch, and printer output. When someone presses the button, the software selects a layout and fills its panels with drawings from Batrack’s image collection. The finished composite is saved as a PNG on the Raspberry Pi’s SD card, then sent to the thermal printer.

The drawings carry data that helps fit them into panels. Batrack’s project page says an image larger than its panel is cropped. The original collection contained about 100 drawings, according to the Raspberry Pi Official Magazine feature, which says the article first appeared in The MagPi 71; it does not give a precise publication date. That count describes this project’s library, not a general benchmark.

#1 Best Overall
- The 58mm embedded micro thermal printer has excellent performance, clear printing and beautiful structure, and is widely used in medical instruments, testing instruments and other equipment. CAD or 3D drawings are available. It works perfectly with your device, making printing easier than ever. Easily embedded into any type of instrumentation for printing.
- This thermal receipt printer can be connected to Arduino,MCU, Android, Linux, Windows systems and other platforms, and Android provides a secondary development kit. It can easily print text, pictures, barcodes, QR codes, etc. Provide ESC/POS printing instruction set and development materials.
- The printer supports a wide voltage range of 12V~24V, and the maximum voltage cannot exceed 24V. We provide three physical interfaces, RS232/TTL+USB, with TTL as the default. If you need to switch to RS232, you can contact us by email and we will tell you how to switch.
- We really like this printer because its easy to make Bold, underline , inverted text , variable line spacing, left/center/right justification, barcodes with adjustable height, and even custom QR code.
- Open the paper compartment cover on the front panel to change the paper, the operation is simple and convenient. The structure is beautiful, and the slider can be moved to fix the printer on the device by twisting the screws on both sides of the paper bin.
Why do random panels feel like a story?
The machine chooses and places images without constructing a coherent narrative. A comic’s panels nevertheless suggest sequence and relationships, so readers instinctively connect the pictures. Batrack describes the effect this way: “Although images are selected and placed randomly, the comic panel format suggests relationships between elements. Our minds create a story where there is none in an attempt to explain visuals created by a non-intelligent machine.”
That gap between random assembly and human interpretation is central to the project. The robot is not writing jokes or plotting a strip; it provides a visual prompt that each reader can interpret differently.

What components does the documented build use?
| Part or element | What the project documents |
|---|---|
| Computer | Raspberry Pi 3 |
| Printer | USB mini thermal receipt printer; brand and model are not stated in the cited project descriptions. |
| Controls and indicators | A button triggers the process; LEDs are controlled by the Python script. |
| Enclosure | Laser-cut plywood case. |
| Software | Processing generates the comic; Python handles input, LEDs, communication with the sketch, and printing. |
| Artwork | A library of hand-drawn images, with associated data used to fit them to panel dimensions. |
The sources do not specify paper width, printer model, or a verified parts list for replacement hardware. For a new build, check that the printer supports the host connection and image-printing workflow you plan to use, confirm its paper width and paper availability, and make sure its physical size suits the enclosure. The project pages do not establish compatibility for any currently sold printer or paper.

The magazine feature presents the project as replicable using Batrack’s comic-generating code, with the option to add a maker’s own drawings. A different image library changes the raw material the generator can combine while retaining the same basic idea: arrange images in panels and let readers supply the narrative.

Batrack also discussed a possible future dial for choosing themes such as food, animals, or nature. That was an idea for a future version, not a feature of the documented build. The magazine article notes that a machine printing something other than randomly generated comics would be simpler because it could omit the Processing sketch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why build it for an event?
The robot was created by interaction designer and developer Cadin Batrack as an event-friendly demonstration of random comic software. Its button-driven workflow gives visitors a quick way to generate a strip and take a print away. Batrack explained the motivation in the magazine feature: “I wanted a way to show off the random comic software at my booth, to let people generate and print a custom comic to take with them. The obvious solution was to build a little yellow robot that vomits comics out of his mouth.”
