It can reduce avoidable mistakes, but it cannot guarantee inbox placement. The key is to treat message quality assurance and deliverability checks as related but distinct jobs.
What email testing checks
Email testing is pre-send quality assurance. It covers both the message recipients interact with and the systems that affect whether providers accept or filter it.
- Message QA: Check how the email renders in the clients and devices your audience uses, verify copy and links, and look for accessibility issues.
- Deliverability checks: Review sender authentication, blocklist and spam-filter results, and provider diagnostics.
A message can look correct and still encounter authentication or reputation problems. Likewise, sender diagnostics do not tell you whether the email’s layout works across clients.
Why previewing across email clients matters
Email clients can display the same message differently. Previewing in the clients and on the devices relevant to your audience can expose layout or content problems while there is still time to fix them. There is no need to imply that every campaign must be tested in every client; choose coverage based on who receives the email.

Some email QA services advertise previews across selected clients, alongside accessibility and spam checks. For example, Litmus describes these capabilities, but a vendor’s feature description is not an independent assessment of performance.
Accessibility belongs in pre-send QA
Accessibility checks can flag issues that make a message harder for some recipients to read or use. Litmus’s pre-send accessibility guidance describes automated checks and screen-reader-related testing. Automated results are useful, but they do not by themselves establish that an email is fully accessible.

Why correct rendering does not guarantee delivery
Authentication and sender reputation are separate from appearance. Google says unauthenticated messages sent to Gmail may be marked as spam or rejected, and recommends monitoring sender status with Postmaster Tools.
Google’s current Gmail guidance says all senders must use SPF or DKIM. Senders sending more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail must use SPF, DKIM, and DMARC and meet additional requirements, including alignment and one-click unsubscribe for marketing or subscribed messages. Google says these requirements began February 1, 2024. They apply to Gmail’s requirements, not automatically to every provider or jurisdiction. Google recommends configuring SPF, DKIM, and DMARC even when the minimum requirement is lower.

Google also advises keeping Gmail spam rates below 0.10% and avoiding rates of 0.30% or higher. Those are Google’s stated Gmail thresholds, not universal limits across mailbox providers.
How to check if your emails are marked as spam
Use diagnostics that measure the issue you are investigating. Google Postmaster Tools reports Gmail-related spam feedback, delivery issues, authentication, and domain or IP reputation. It is not a visual preview tool, and its information concerns Gmail rather than every recipient’s provider.
Rank #4
Google states, “Google doesn’t track open rates.” It also says it cannot verify the accuracy of open rates reported by third parties, so opens should not be treated as a definitive Gmail-side measure of deliverability.

The right process depends on audience size, sending workflow, and how much repeatable coverage the team needs. The approaches below serve different purposes and can be combined.

| Approach | Useful for | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Manual checklist | Small operations that can consistently check relevant client previews, links, content, and accessibility basics before sending. | Broad client coverage or provider-side authentication and reputation status. |
| Email QA platform | Teams seeking repeatable previews, integrated review, or bundled accessibility and spam checks. Litmus describes these kinds of features. | Guaranteed inbox placement or a universal need to buy a service. |
| Sender diagnostics | Checking Gmail-related authentication, spam feedback, delivery issues, and reputation in Google Postmaster Tools. | Cross-client visual rendering or how a message appears to every recipient. |
For a small team, a written, repeatable manual checklist may be enough to begin. Wider client coverage, workflow integration, or recurring accessibility and spam checks may make a dedicated service useful; the available feature descriptions do not establish a universal purchase threshold.
What testing can—and cannot—prove
Testing is a way to reduce avoidable errors and improve the recipient experience, not a promise that an email will reach the inbox. Litmus’s 2021 CMO’s Guide reported a 39:1 ROI among companies that tested emails through spam filters before sending, compared with 28:1 among those that did not. This is a vendor-published historical survey comparison, not proof that spam testing caused the difference or a dependable current benchmark.
