A link popularity checker is a backlink-analysis tool: it estimates the links pointing to a website or page and may report total backlinks, unique referring domains, and other tool-specific metrics. It helps you inspect a link profile—not reveal a universal count or a Google ranking score.
What a link popularity checker counts
A backlink is a hyperlink from another website to a target website or page. A referring domain is a distinct domain that links to that target. As Ahrefs explains, if one site links to you twice, that is two backlinks but one referring domain. Its Site Explorer lets users examine a whole website, a page, or a subfolder, with separate reports for backlinks and referring domains. Ahrefs: Referring domains vs. backlinks

“Link popularity” is an informal way to describe a site’s link profile, not a standardized figure shared by every search engine and SEO service. Checkers use their own crawls, indexes, and reporting rules, so their counts can differ and should not be treated as a complete census of every link on the web.
Why links matter—and what popularity scores do not mean
Google says it uses links as signals to assess page relevance and discover new pages. Its documentation also says link-analysis systems help it understand what pages are about and which may be useful, and that PageRank remains part of its core ranking systems. - The number of quality backlinks to a website indicates a good Link Score to the website and in turn a good Page Rank.
- SEO Backlink App is designed to display the details of the incoming links(backlinks) to a website. Track and analyse the backlinks for a website by entering the URL above.
A tool’s authority score is not a Google score. For example, Ahrefs describes Domain Rating (DR) as its proprietary metric, while Semrush describes Authority Score as its own measure drawing on backlink quality and quantity. These can help compare sites within the same provider’s system, but they are not Google’s published ranking metrics. Providers may report different values because their metrics and link datasets differ. Ahrefs: Referring domains vs. backlinks Semrush: Free backlink checker
A backlink total or authority score alone cannot establish whether links are relevant or valuable, how much referral traffic they bring, or whether rankings will improve. Treat the figures as clues for investigation, not targets that guarantee a result.

How to use a link popularity checker
- Choose the target scope. Decide whether you are checking a domain, a particular URL, or a subfolder. Keep that scope consistent when comparing reports. Ahrefs supports all three scopes in Site Explorer. Ahrefs: Referring domains vs. backlinks
- Read backlinks and referring domains together. A large backlink count may come from repeated links on a small number of sites. The referring-domain count helps show how many distinct domains link to the target.
- Inspect the links behind the totals. Where available, review the linking pages and domains, link attributes, and filters such as follow and nofollow. Ahrefs lists backlink and referring-domain reports, DR, and follow/nofollow filtering among its checker features. Use details to understand the profile rather than to chase a vendor score. Ahrefs Backlink Checker
- Compare tools on equal terms. Check the same target and, as closely as possible, the same date. Note each service’s scope, visible results, filters, historical views, exports, and metric definitions. Semrush describes its free checker as a quick lookup and its Backlink Analytics service as providing expanded results, filters, and exportable reports; exact access and limits depend on the service terms. - For a site you manage, consult Search Console too. Treat a commercial checker as an external dataset, not the sole authority on your own site’s links.

| Comparing authority metrics | Read the provider’s definition first and compare values within that provider’s system. DR and Authority Score are vendor-defined metrics, not Google scores. Ahrefs: Referring domains vs. backlinks Semrush: Free backlink checker |
Use link data without creating a spam problem
Checking links is different from manipulating them. Google defines link spam as creating links to or from a site primarily to manipulate search rankings. Its examples include buying or selling links for ranking purposes and using automated programs or services to create links. For advertising or sponsorship links, Google says to qualify them with rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored". Google Search Central: Spam policies for Google Web Search
