The specific game must support the Xbox–PlayStation pairing and mode, and its own cross-play, account, friend, and party settings must allow it. Console privacy permissions and service outages can also block play. Start by identifying whether the failure is matchmaking, an invite, joining a lobby, or voice chat; the fix depends on the symptom.
First, identify what is failing
Before changing settings, note the game, both console models or generations, the game version, and any error code. Then distinguish the symptom:

- Can’t find a friend: The game may use its own friend list or account name rather than console friends.
- An invite fails or the other player can’t join: Check the game’s party and invitation system, account requirements, and privacy permissions.
- Matchmaking keeps players on separate platforms: Confirm cross-play is supported for that game mode and enabled by both players.
- Only voice chat fails: Troubleshoot chat channels and permissions separately. A voice problem does not necessarily mean cross-play is broken.
- The game cannot connect to its servers: Check service status and the local connection before changing router settings.
Confirm the game supports this exact cross-play pairing
Cross-play is implemented game by game. Support may depend on the title, mode, game version, or the game’s account system; having an Xbox and a PlayStation does not guarantee that a particular game lets them play together. Check the publisher’s current support information for the exact platforms and mode. Epic describes its online services as offering developers cross-play and related multiplayer features, but that does not establish support in every Epic-connected game. The game’s own documentation is the authority for its rules: Epic Online Services overview.
If the pairing or mode is not supported, a console setting or router change will not enable it. If it is supported, continue with the game’s own account, friend, and cross-play controls.

Update the game and check its account and friend system
- Install available updates for the game on both consoles, then restart the game and consoles. Players on incompatible versions may not be able to join the same session.
- Check whether the publisher requires or recommends a particular in-game account, and confirm both players are signed into the correct accounts. Do not assume account linking is required; follow that game’s instructions.
- Add or locate the other player through the game’s own friend or party system if the game uses one. Being friends through Xbox or PlayStation alone may not make someone available in the game.
- Use the game’s party or lobby controls to invite and join. Confirm that both players can receive game invitations and are selecting a compatible mode.
Enable cross-play in the game and check console permissions
Look first in the game’s settings for cross-play or cross-platform play. Console-level permissions are a separate layer: they can restrict multiplayer with people outside a platform’s network even when the game supports it. Menu wording can change, so use current platform guidance if the labels differ.
Fortnite on PlayStation
Epic’s documented Fortnite path is: from the lobby, open Menu > Settings > Account and Privacy > Gameplay Privacy > Allow Cross Platform Play, then select Yes. Epic warns that disabling cross-play can leave some modes available only in Solo. It also says, “Crossplay functionality significantly lowers queue times.” That is Epic Games Player Support’s qualitative statement, not a measured queue-time figure. See Epic’s Fortnite cross-play instructions.
Xbox permissions
For Fortnite, Epic directs Xbox players to Microsoft’s cross-network-play guidance and identifies the relevant Xbox privilege: allowing play with people outside Xbox Live. Check the current Xbox privacy and online-safety settings for cross-network play and communication permissions; labels and menus may change. Epic’s troubleshooting page is Fortnite voice chat troubleshooting, and its linked Microsoft guidance is Microsoft’s cross-network-play article.

PlayStation privacy and family settings
PlayStation privacy controls can affect interaction through games, parties, and messages, as well as whether a player can receive cross-play game invitations. For child accounts, the family manager may control these settings. Review the account’s privacy and family restrictions if a setting is unavailable or locked. Sony’s guide explains the available controls: PlayStation privacy settings.
On either platform, check parental or family restrictions if multiplayer, communication, or invitations are blocked. A setting being enabled in the game does not override a console-level restriction.
If only voice chat is not working
Treat chat as its own problem rather than using it as evidence that matchmaking or cross-play is unavailable. For Fortnite, Epic distinguishes the Party Channel, for members of the Epic Party, from the Game Channel, for teammates in different parties. Choose the channel that matches who needs to hear whom.

- Leave Xbox or PlayStation console Party Chat if you want to use Fortnite voice chat.
- Check cross-network communication permissions on Xbox and parental chat settings where applicable.
- On PS5, check whether the game voice chat is muted.
- Check Epic’s known issues and service status for Fortnite voice problems.
Epic’s voice troubleshooting also discusses NAT, UPnP, and network ports for relevant voice issues. Those steps are specific to applicable network or voice symptoms; they are not a universal remedy for failed cross-play invitations or matchmaking. Consult the game’s guidance before changing router settings.
Check services and connection before changing the router
First check whether the game’s servers or the relevant platform service are having problems. Epic recommends checking its known issues and service status for Fortnite voice issues. Sony recommends checking PlayStation Network status when a PS5 cannot connect to a server. An outage or temporary service problem cannot be fixed by changing a player’s NAT or DNS settings.
For general connection trouble, restart the game and console, then restart the modem and router. If practical, test the console with a wired connection. Sony’s PS5 guidance for error CE-105799-1 (unable to connect to server) also recommends checking service status, restarting equipment, and considering router firmware, ports, a static IP, or DNS if basic steps do not resolve that specific error. Sony notes that a network line may be temporarily busy, in which case waiting and trying again may help. These are connection steps for that error, not a diagnosis for every cross-play failure: Sony’s CE-105799-1 troubleshooting.

Port forwarding, UPnP, DNS changes, and static IP configuration are not interchangeable universal fixes. Follow the console maker’s and game publisher’s current instructions, and seek router-vendor or ISP help if needed. Avoid changing several network settings at once; otherwise, it is harder to tell what affected the connection.
When the problem persists
Contact the game publisher or platform support with details that help distinguish a game restriction from an account or connection issue:
Quick Recap
- Game title, version, mode, and both platform names and console generations.
- The exact error message or code, and whether the problem is finding a friend, sending an invite, joining a lobby, matchmaking, or voice chat.
- How the players are finding each other (platform friends, in-game friends, or account names) and whether both can join other sessions.
- Which cross-play and privacy permissions you checked, plus relevant service-status results.
- For a connection-specific problem, the connection type and any NAT result the game or console reports.
