If an X video will not start, tap it once before troubleshooting: autoplay may simply be turned off. If it still will not play after you tap, check the connection and then the browser or app you are using. X does not identify one universal cause, so these steps help narrow down the problem rather than guarantee a fix.
First, check whether autoplay is off
A video that does not start on its own may still play normally when tapped. X lets you choose autoplay behavior separately on x.com and in its mobile apps; the setting can be set to never autoplay. On Android, Data Saver also prevents videos from autoplaying. X describes native videos and GIFs as autoplaying in timelines, Moments, Explore, and other areas when settings allow it.

Change autoplay in the X app
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Go to Accessibility, display, and languages, then Data usage.
- Open Video autoplay and choose an option that permits autoplay if you want videos to start automatically. On Android, also check whether Data Saver is enabled.

- Open Settings and privacy.
- Go to Accessibility, display, and languages, then Data usage.
- Open Autoplay and choose an option that permits it.

If a video fails after you tap it, check the connection
Confirm that other sites or apps can use the internet. Then try the same video on another network, such as Wi-Fi instead of mobile data, if one is available. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell whether the problem appears tied to a particular connection. This is a diagnostic check, not a guaranteed remedy.

For live video or a replay, X recommends a strong connection and suggests trying another network or browser. It also recommends using an up-to-date app or browser. X’s video guidance does not promise these steps will resolve every playback failure.

- Open a private or incognito window and try the video there.
- Update the browser, then try again.
- Clear the browser’s cache and cookies.
- If the video still fails, temporarily disable extensions or ad blockers one at a time, testing after each change. Restore them when you finish.
- Try another supported browser to see whether the problem is limited to one browser.
X lists Edge, Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and browsers based on WebKit or Chromium as supported, and says browser versions from the past year are supported. That window and browser support can change. X warns that older or modified browsers may not work as expected; see About x.com supported browsers. If you use X in a mobile browser, X also recommends clearing that browser’s cache and cookies; its mobile web help advises restarting the phone and checking the connection.
Troubleshoot playback in the mobile app
First check the connection and autoplay setting, then restart the app or device and test again. Keep X and your phone’s operating system current: X recommends current versions, but an update is not a guaranteed fix. If you use a VPN, briefly turn it off as a connection test, then turn it back on.

Android: clear app data only after basic checks
X lists clearing app data as a later troubleshooting step. It resets notification and sync settings, so you may need to set those preferences again. If you proceed, follow X’s Android app troubleshooting instructions. X also lists logging out and back in, and reinstalling the app.
iPhone or iPad: reinstall if simpler checks fail
If restarting and checking the connection do not help, X lists removing and reinstalling the app among its iOS troubleshooting steps. Follow the current instructions in X’s iOS app help.

Use comparisons to narrow down what is failing
If the same video works in another browser, on another network, or on another device, that comparison helps identify which part of your setup to investigate. For example, a video that plays in a private window but not a regular one points toward browser state or an extension as a useful next check; it does not prove which extension or setting is responsible. X’s guidance identifies connection, browser, app, and autoplay settings as relevant checks, but does not diagnose an individual failed post.

A failure on one video does not by itself establish an outage, codec problem, account restriction, or device fault. X’s note about unsupported video formats concerns uploading and does not establish a cause of ordinary viewing failures. If other videos play and only one does not, the available guidance does not identify why that specific post fails.
