How to Improve Wi‑Fi Speeds Without Upgrading Your Internet Plan

Find out whether slow speeds come from Wi‑Fi or your broadband connection, then use targeted fixes for placement, bands, Ethernet, household demand, and coverage.

You can often make Wi‑Fi faster or more reliable without changing your internet plan—but first find out whether the slowdown is in your home’s wireless network or in the broadband connection coming into it. Compare a speed test near the router with one in the problem room, and, if possible, test a computer over Ethernet. If the wired connection is also slow, Wi‑Fi adjustments are unlikely to fix the underlying limit.

First, find out where the slowdown is

A broadband plan’s speed and the speed a device gets over Wi‑Fi are related, but they are not the same. Wireless performance depends on the router’s location, distance and obstacles, the Wi‑Fi band and capabilities of the device, and how many people or devices are using the connection.

  1. Record a baseline. Run a speed test before changing anything. Note the time, device, location, and whether it is connected by Wi‑Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Test near the router. Use the same device if practical, then repeat the test in the room where Wi‑Fi feels slow. Repeat each test rather than treating one result as conclusive.
  3. Compare with Ethernet. If your router and computer support it, connect the computer directly to the router and run another test. Strong wired results alongside weak Wi‑Fi point toward a wireless coverage, interference, or device issue. Slow wired results suggest the problem may be with the modem, router, broadband service, or plan.

These tests help locate the problem; they do not guarantee a particular speed. If wired performance is poor, contact your internet provider or check the modem and service before buying Wi‑Fi equipment.

Move the router to a better location

Put the router in an open, central spot, raised above floor level if possible. Avoid hiding it in a closet, drawer, or cabinet, and keep it clear of walls and solid obstacles where you can. Materials such as concrete, cinder block, wood, and drywall can weaken or block radio signals.

  • Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
  • Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
  • Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router

Change one thing at a time, then repeat a test in the room that matters. A better position may improve coverage, but it cannot resolve an ISP-side issue or guarantee an equally strong signal in every room.

Choose the Wi‑Fi band that suits the device

If your router and device offer both bands, choose based on distance, obstacles, and the device’s needs. Router and device settings differ, so the available network names and controls will depend on your equipment.

Connection Best fit Trade-off
5 GHz Wi‑Fi Supported devices near the router that need throughput, such as a laptop, TV, or game console Often faster and less crowded by neighboring Wi‑Fi, but has shorter range and is less effective through obstacles than 2.4 GHz.
2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi Devices farther away, behind more walls, or with older Wi‑Fi support Reaches farther and works with more older or IoT devices, but is often slower and may face more congestion.

The FCC describes 5 GHz as faster but shorter-range than 2.4 GHz; Microsoft support also notes the range and obstacle trade-offs. Neither band is automatically best for every device or room.

Connect stationary devices by Ethernet

A desktop computer, streaming TV, or game console near the router may benefit from a direct Ethernet connection. It avoids the Wi‑Fi link for that device, which can make its connection more stable and reduce wireless contention for other devices. The FCC recommends Ethernet as a way to provide high speeds to a connected device and alleviate Wi‑Fi congestion.

If a laptop or other device lacks an Ethernet port, a USB Ethernet adapter may work; check that it is compatible with the device. The cable, adapter, router port, device, modem, and broadband service all affect the connection’s capacity. Ethernet does not raise the speed ceiling set by the internet plan.

Reduce competition for the connection

Several demanding activities at once—such as streaming, graphics-intensive gaming, video calls, and VPN work—can bog down even a recent router. When a call or other task needs a steadier connection, pause large downloads or schedule them for another time. If several people share the connection, agree on when high-demand tasks can run.

Use an extender or mesh system only when coverage is the problem

If tests show that Wi‑Fi weakens in particular rooms while the connection is better near the router, additional coverage hardware may help. It extends or distributes the wireless network; it does not increase the performance of the broadband connection itself. Ofcom makes this distinction for mesh systems.

TP-Link Deco S4 Whole Home Mesh WiFi System, Deco S4(2-Pack)
  • A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
  • Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 2 units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 3,800 sq. ft. No Dead Zone anymore.

  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds
  • Range extender: Consider one for a single weak area. Place it where it still receives a usable signal from the router—not deep inside the dead zone it is meant to fix.
  • Mesh system: Consider mesh for multiple weak areas or a larger, multi-floor home. Google Fiber recommends placing a wireless mesh extender about halfway between the router and the furthest area needing coverage, while ensuring it still has an excellent connection.

A wired backhaul, where supported, can change where mesh nodes can be placed. Follow the instructions for the specific system; placement and backhaul quality affect the result.

Match the remedy to the symptom

Option Best fit Limit to keep in mind
Relocate the router Weak signal linked to the current position or nearby obstacles Free, but may not reach every room or resolve a broadband-side limit.
Use 5 GHz Nearby, supported devices that need throughput Shorter range and weaker obstacle penetration than 2.4 GHz.
Ethernet cable Stationary device near the router; consistency or Wi‑Fi congestion concern Tethers the device and remains limited by the equipment and service capacity.
USB Ethernet adapter Device without a built-in Ethernet port Compatibility and port capability vary.
Range extender One limited weak-coverage area Must receive a usable signal where it is placed; does not increase plan speed.
Mesh system Several weak areas or a larger, multi-floor layout Costs more than relocation and requires suitable placement and backhaul.

Retest after each change

Repeat the same tests in the same locations after moving the router, changing bands, wiring a device, or adding coverage hardware. If the result improves only in one room, the change may have helped local coverage without fixing other parts of the home. If wired and near-router results remain poor, focus on the broadband path rather than buying Wi‑Fi coverage equipment.
