A U.S. study found more and more severe mining injuries on the Monday immediately after the change, but an Ontario study found no increase in injury-claim incidence. The evidence is mixed: it suggests a plausible short-term risk, not a universal effect.
How the spring time change could affect safety
When clocks move forward in spring, the clock time advances by an hour. For workers following their usual routines, that can mean less opportunity for sleep or waking at a time that is earlier relative to their body clock. A disrupted sleep schedule and circadian timing may make it harder to stay alert and perform tasks reliably.

NIOSH says it can take about a week for the body to adjust sleeping, eating, and activity times after a time change. That is an estimate for adjustment, not evidence that every worker is impaired for a week or that injuries rise throughout that period. The mechanism is plausible, but the available studies do not establish that the clock change directly causes any particular injury.

U.S. mining injuries increased on the following Monday
In a 2009 study, Christopher M. Barnes and David T. Wagner analyzed a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health mining-injury database covering 1983–2006. They reported more workplace injuries and injuries of greater severity on the Monday immediately after the spring transition, when one hour is lost. The result concerns mining injuries on that specific Monday; it does not establish a rise across all industries or across the entire week. Read the study record on PubMed.

In a separate analysis using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics time-use data from 2003–2006, Barnes and Wagner found that workers slept an average of 40 minutes less on those Mondays than on other Mondays. That is a study-specific average, not a prediction for each person. It is consistent with sleep loss as one possible pathway, but does not prove that reduced sleep caused the mining injuries.
Ontario claims data did not show an immediate increase
A 2010 study by Sara Morassaei and Peter M. Smith examined Ontario Workplace Safety & Insurance Board claims from 1993–2007. It found no increase in work-injury claim incidence in the days immediately after the spring transition. The authors also noted that lower claim counts on some later days were explained by Good Friday falling in the relevant week in three years, when fewer people were working. Their conclusion applies to the Ontario setting and claims data they analyzed, not necessarily to other workforces or injury measures. Read the Ontario study.

Why the findings are not a contradiction
The studies examined different places, worker populations, time periods, datasets, and outcomes. One identified a change in mining injuries and severity on the Monday after the spring switch; the other assessed injury-claim incidence across Ontario workplaces and found no immediate increase. Differences in industry mix, work schedules, how injuries are recorded, and the precise days or outcomes measured can produce different findings. Neither study warrants a blanket claim that injuries rise everywhere after the clock change.

A 2026 systematic review synthesized 157 studies from 36 countries, with literature searches through June 2025. It described the evidence as limited and heterogeneous and concluded that daylight-saving transitions and summer daylight-saving time are not uniformly detrimental. Its abstract reports associations between spring onset and acute myocardial infarction and fatal traffic accidents, and a decrease in workplace accidents after the autumn offset. Those broader findings provide context about possible health and safety effects, but they are not direct evidence that spring transitions increase workplace injuries. Read the systematic review.

What workers and employers can do
NIOSH recommends reminding workers to be especially vigilant while driving, at work, and at home after a time change, because people around them may be sleepier and more prone to errors. This is practical agency guidance, not proof that a reminder or a particular workplace intervention prevents the injuries observed in the studies. See NIOSH’s suggestions for adapting to the time change.
For workers, the evidence supports treating the first days after the switch as a period to pay close attention to fatigue and routine safety practices, rather than assuming that every worker faces the same level of risk. Employers can reinforce existing hazard checks and safe-work procedures without presenting the clock change as a confirmed cause of injury or implying that a specific product or policy has been proven to eliminate the risk.
