Why WordPress Websites Get Hacked and How to Prevent It

Most WordPress hacks trace to vulnerable extensions, stolen credentials, weak hosting or missing monitoring—not an unavoidable flaw in WordPress core. This guide explains the attack paths, prevention controls and post-hack recovery sequence.

WordPress websites are usually hacked because an outdated plugin or theme, stolen credentials, unsafe file handling, excessive permissions, or weak hosting controls gives an attacker an opening. WordPress core is not an unavoidable security failure; the surrounding software and the way a site is operated determine most of its risk.

Preventing a compromise requires layered controls: patch every component, protect administrator accounts with unique passwords and two-factor authentication, limit privileges, filter hostile traffic, monitor changes, and keep tested backups that an intruder cannot overwrite. If a site is already compromised, preserve evidence, contain it, remove the foothold, rotate every credential, and restore only from a verified clean source.

Why WordPress websites get hacked

WordPress is a large, open-source platform used across the web. That visibility makes it an efficient target: attackers can automate scans for recognizable login pages, plugin files and known vulnerable versions. Wordfence’s security guide recorded WordPress on more than 34% of websites worldwide in 2024. That is a dated usage statistic, not a current market-share measurement, but it explains why criminals can reuse the same scanning and exploit tools against many sites.

The most important distinction is between WordPress core and the complete site stack. A site normally includes core, plugins, themes, PHP, the operating system, a web server, a database, hosting controls and administrator accounts. A weakness in any layer can lead to defacement, spam, data theft, new administrator accounts or persistent malware. WordPress hardening guidance describes this pattern plainly: “Rarely is it attributed to the infrastructure, and most often attributed to the application itself (i.e., the environment you are responsible for).”

Wordfence’s report on 2024 disclosures found that plugins accounted for 96% of all WordPress vulnerabilities disclosed in 2024. The same 2025 report, covering 2024 activity, says its network blocked more than 54 billion malicious requests and more than 55 billion password attacks during that year. Those figures describe the volume of hostile activity observed by one security provider, not the probability that any particular site will be hacked.

The attack surfaces attackers use

Weakness What an attacker may do Why it persists
Vulnerable plugin or theme Exploit a known flaw to read data, upload code, change content or create an account Updates are delayed, compatibility is feared, or the component is abandoned
Weak or reused credentials Guess or reuse a password, then take over an administrator or hosting account Passwords are shared, short, reused or never revoked
Brute-force and credential-stuffing attacks Submit large numbers of login attempts until a valid password is found Login endpoints remain exposed without rate limits or multifactor authentication
SQL injection Alter database queries to read, modify or delete information Unsafe extension code fails to validate input and use parameterized queries
Cross-site scripting (XSS) Run attacker-controlled script in another user’s browser, steal sessions or alter actions Input and output are not correctly validated and escaped
Insecure file upload Place executable malware on the server or use a crafted file to bypass checks Upload directories are writable, executable or insufficiently validated
Authentication bypass Reach privileged functions without a valid login Custom code mishandles permissions, tokens or session checks
Hosting and isolation failure Move from one site to another account or access exposed services Unrelated sites share an account, directories are overly writable, or services are exposed
Missing monitoring and backups Maintain persistence and continue damaging the site after an initial cleanup No one reviews logs, file changes or restore procedures

Six common reasons a WordPress site is compromised

1. Outdated or vulnerable plugins and themes

Every extension adds code, endpoints and permissions. Attackers track disclosed vulnerabilities and scan the internet for the affected version. Once a patch is available, public details can make unpatched installations easier to identify. A plugin that is inactive in the dashboard may still be installed and exploitable if its files remain on the server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove extensions you do not need instead of leaving them disabled. Before installing a replacement, check whether its maintainer publishes updates, responds to security issues and supports the WordPress and PHP versions you run. A “nulled” or pirated package is especially dangerous: it may contain deliberate backdoors and will not receive trustworthy updates.

2. Weak authentication and password reuse

Attackers do not need a software exploit when they can log in. Passwords stolen from another service are tested against WordPress accounts, and automated bots try common administrator names and passwords. A single compromised administrator account can install a malicious plugin, edit theme files or create additional users.

Use a long, unique password for every administrator and store it in a password manager. Enable two-factor authentication for every administrator account. WordPress core does not include 2FA; the WordPress Developer Handbook recommends using a plugin or an identity provider. Remove dormant accounts, change ownership when staff leave, and never share one administrator login among several people.

3. Injection, scripting and upload flaws

Public forms, search fields, REST endpoints, import tools and media uploaders all process untrusted input. SQL injection can manipulate database queries. XSS can run code in a visitor’s browser or an administrator’s session. An upload flaw can turn an image or document feature into a route for executable code. Authentication-bypass bugs skip a permission check altogether.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Site owners cannot repair a coding flaw in a third-party extension by changing a dashboard setting. The safe response is to update to a fixed release, disable and remove the component if no fix exists, and ask the maintainer for a security advisory. Custom developers should validate input, use WordPress APIs and prepared database queries, enforce capability checks, escape output for its context, and store uploads outside executable paths where the hosting design permits.

4. Abandoned, unofficial or malicious software

An extension that has not been maintained may contain a vulnerability that will never be patched. Software obtained from an untrusted download site may have been modified before installation. Install WordPress itself only from WordPress.org, and obtain plugins and themes from reputable maintainers. Keep an inventory of every component, including must-use plugins and server-side packages, so an old file cannot remain unnoticed.

5. Weak hosting and configuration

Shared hosting is not automatically unsafe, but poor isolation increases the blast radius of a compromise. If unrelated sites live in one account, an attacker who obtains server-level access may read or alter neighboring installations. Writable directories, unnecessary services, exposed database or administration ports and weak file permissions create additional routes.

Use HTTPS, restrict file and directory permissions to the minimum needed, disable services you do not use, and keep PHP and operating-system packages supported and patched. Separate unrelated projects into different accounts or containers where practical. Protect the origin server so attackers cannot bypass a traffic filter by connecting directly to its address.

6. No detection or reliable recovery

A compromise can remain hidden after the visible spam or defacement is removed. Malware may add a new administrator, schedule a task, alter a legitimate plugin or place code in an uploads directory. Without logs and file-integrity or malware scanning, the persistence mechanism may survive for months.

Backups are useful only if they are complete, available and clean. A backup stored on the same writable account can be encrypted or deleted by the intruder, and restoring an infected snapshot simply reinstalls the problem.

Are WordPress sites easy to hack?

WordPress is not inherently easy to hack, but its popularity makes automated probing constant. The practical risk depends on the site’s patching speed, extension quality, authentication, hosting isolation and ability to detect and recover. A current WordPress core installation with a small set of maintained extensions and protected administrator accounts is a different security proposition from an old site carrying abandoned plugins and shared credentials.

Security is therefore an operating process rather than a one-time installation. Treat every login endpoint, upload feature, extension and hosting account as part of the attack surface. The objective is not to make hostile requests disappear; it is to ensure that a request cannot become unauthorized access and that any successful intrusion is discovered and contained quickly.

How to prevent a WordPress website from being hacked

Patch the complete stack

  • Update WordPress core, plugins, themes, PHP and operating-system packages promptly after trusted security releases.
  • Remove unused, abandoned or unsupported components rather than leaving their files on the server.
  • Review compatibility in a staging copy when a critical business workflow is involved, but set a deadline so testing does not become indefinite delay.
  • Subscribe to security advisories from the maintainers of the components you depend on and record which versions are deployed.

Protect every administrator account

  • Use a long, unique password generated and stored by a password manager.
  • Enable 2FA for all administrators through a reputable plugin or an identity provider.
  • Rename or remove unused accounts, revoke access for former staff and contractors, and review the administrator list regularly.
  • Limit login attempts or apply equivalent rate limiting, and require HTTPS for login and administrative sessions.

Apply least privilege

Give each person the lowest WordPress role that lets them complete their work. Editors generally do not need plugin installation; contractors should not retain permanent administrator access. Review roles in WordPress, hosting, database, SSH, FTP and third-party services. Separate publishing duties from site configuration when your workflow allows it, and use temporary, individually attributable accounts for maintenance.

Put filtering and scanning in front of the origin

An edge web application firewall can block known malicious patterns before they reach the server. A host-level firewall and a WordPress security plugin provide different visibility and controls: one may see network traffic while another inspects application behavior and files. Malware scanning can identify altered files, suspicious signatures and unexpected users, but no scanner can guarantee that a sophisticated backdoor is absent.

When selecting a service, evaluate where protection runs, whether it blocks, detects, cleans or restores, how quickly humans respond, how false positives are handled, whether it fits your caching and plugin stack, and how much day-to-day administration it requires. Do not assume that a firewall replaces patching or backups.

Monitor the events that reveal persistence

  • Administrator and hosting logins, including failed attempts and new locations.
  • Creation, deletion or role changes for users.
  • Plugin and theme installation, updates and file modifications.
  • Changes to server configuration, scheduled tasks and writable directories.
  • Unexpected outbound email, redirects, scripts or network connections.

Send important logs to storage the compromised account cannot alter, set retention appropriate to your legal and operational needs, and define who investigates an alert. A notification without an owner is not a detection program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build backups that can actually recover the site

  • Automate backups of the database, uploaded media, themes, plugins and relevant server configuration.
  • Keep copies off the production account and retain at least one version an attacker cannot overwrite.
  • Encrypt backups in transit and at rest, and restrict who can delete them.
  • Periodically perform a clean restore into an isolated environment and confirm that the site, forms, media and integrations work.

Record the restore procedure, credentials needed to execute it and the person responsible for approving a rollback. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.

Harden the hosting environment

  • Use supported software versions and HTTPS certificates.
  • Restrict file permissions and prevent execution in directories intended only for media uploads, subject to your host’s documented configuration.
  • Disable unused services and protect SSH or FTP with keys, strong authentication and source restrictions where feasible.
  • Keep unrelated sites out of the same hosting account or isolate them with separate users and containers.
  • Protect the origin address when an edge service is used, so attackers cannot bypass it.

What to do after a WordPress site is hacked

Do not start by deleting random files or immediately restoring the newest backup. Those actions can destroy evidence, leave persistence in place or reintroduce malware. The official WordPress FAQ advises documenting what you observed and when, reviewing recent plugin and theme changes, and scanning the site. Use this sequence:

  1. Document the incident. Record the first symptoms, timestamps, affected URLs, suspicious users, recent changes and any messages shown to visitors. Preserve relevant web, firewall, hosting, SSH and authentication logs.
  2. Preserve a forensic copy. Save a copy of the current files and database in a restricted location before making destructive changes. Note its hash or other chain-of-custody details if legal or regulatory action may follow.
  3. Contain access. Put the site in maintenance mode or restrict it at the edge if visitors could be exposed to malware. Do not disconnect evidence from the network without first preserving what you need. Contact the hosting provider and ask whether other accounts or the server itself show related activity.
  4. Identify the initial foothold and persistence. Scan files and the database, compare core and extension files with known-good versions, inspect recently modified files, review new users and scheduled tasks, and trace suspicious outbound requests. Look for the vulnerable plugin, stolen credential or hosting weakness that allowed entry.
  5. Rotate credentials from a clean device. Change WordPress administrator passwords, hosting and control-panel passwords, database credentials, SSH and FTP keys, API tokens, email credentials and any identity-provider secrets. Revoke sessions and tokens, not just passwords.
  6. Patch or remove the cause. Update WordPress, PHP, plugins and themes to fixed versions. Remove unsupported or unofficial packages and close the configuration weakness that enabled access. If a component has no trustworthy fix, replace it.
  7. Clean or rebuild. For a small, well-understood incident, a qualified responder may remove malicious files and restore verified originals. For extensive compromise, rebuild the server or site from known-good sources rather than trying to identify every altered line.
  8. Restore selectively. Use only a backup created before the intrusion and verified as clean. Scan it, compare accounts and configuration, and avoid restoring the vulnerable component or credential set that caused the incident.
  9. Validate before reopening. Check administrator roles, file integrity, redirects, forms, email behavior, scheduled tasks, integrations and outbound traffic. Review logs while the site is restricted, then reopen gradually.
  10. Monitor and report. Increase alerting and log review after recovery. If payment information or personal data may have been exposed, follow the breach-notification and incident-response obligations that apply to your jurisdiction and sector.

Common recovery mistakes

Changing only the WordPress password

An attacker may also possess hosting, database, email, SSH, FTP or API credentials. Leaving any one of those unchanged permits re-entry.

Restoring the latest backup without checking it

The newest snapshot may contain the backdoor. Establish when the compromise began, choose a backup from before that point, and verify it in isolation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deleting visible malware and stopping there

Visible spam is often only one symptom. New users, scheduled tasks, altered configuration and modified legitimate files can recreate the infection.

Keeping an unsafe extension for compatibility

A business dependency does not make an unpatched component safe. Isolate the workflow, replace the extension or obtain a maintained fix; document and time-limit any temporary exception.

Putting the site straight back online

Reopening before validation can expose visitors and erase clues about the attacker’s behavior. Test the rebuilt site, watch logs and restore normal access in stages.

A practical security baseline

A small site should at minimum have current core and extensions, no abandoned software, unique administrator passwords, 2FA for every administrator, least-privilege roles, HTTPS, restricted file permissions, malware and file-change monitoring, off-site automated backups, and a documented restore test. Larger or revenue-critical sites should add edge filtering, centralized logs, separated hosting accounts, formal patch windows, incident contacts and regular access reviews.

These controls reduce both the likelihood of a successful attack and the time an attacker can remain undetected. They also make a compromise less catastrophic: a blocked request is harmless, a detected change can be investigated, and a verified backup turns a prolonged outage into a controlled recovery.
