Fix Minecraft Java Server Crashing or Stopping After Weeks

Find the real cause of a Minecraft Java server that stops after days or weeks. This guide covers backups, log signatures, plugin isolation, watchdog stalls, OOM kills, graceful shutdowns, version mismatches, and long-term prevention.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Minecraft Java server that runs for days and then crashes is usually signaling a specific failure, not an unavoidable time limit. The practical fix is to preserve the world first, identify the shutdown signature, and change one cause at a time. The main possibilities are a plugin or dependency fault, a watchdog response to a stalled tick, an operating-system or container out-of-memory kill, a normal shutdown, or a Java/server/world version mismatch.

PaperMC’s own first instruction is direct: “Before following this guide, stop your server first.” Stop the process cleanly if possible, archive the complete server directory, and only then begin diagnosis.

1. Protect the world before troubleshooting

Do not start by deleting plugins, changing JVM flags, or forcing a world to load. A crash investigation can make an existing problem worse if files are edited while Java is still writing chunks. Stop the server, wait for the process to exit, and create a backup that includes the world, configuration, plugins, logs, and launch scripts.

  1. Use the console’s normal stop command, or stop the process from your hosting panel. If it is unresponsive, terminate it only after noting the time and any visible error.
  2. Copy the entire server directory to storage outside the live instance. Include every world folder, server.properties, paper.yml or other Paper configuration, plugins, config, logs, crash-reports, and the startup script.
  3. Record the server version, Java version, installed plugins, memory arguments, player count, and what was happening immediately before the stop.
  4. Work on a copy when testing a suspected plugin or world. Keep the original backup untouched so you can restore it if a test changes data.

A full directory backup matters because the useful evidence may be outside the crash report. A panel can show a termination reason that Minecraft itself never writes, while an older compressed log can reveal the first warning several hours before the final failure.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

2. Collect the evidence and classify the shutdown

PaperMC notes that a problem normally appears as a console error, a crash report, or both. Start with the newest files and work backward:

  • logs/latest.log for the final minutes and the first exception.
  • Older compressed logs in the logs directory, especially the day when warnings began.
  • Files in crash-reports, if the server generated one.
  • Your hosting panel’s event, resource, and process logs.
  • On Linux, the kernel log, because an operating-system kill leaves no Minecraft crash report.

Search for the first meaningful exception rather than the final cascade of errors. Capture the exception class, its message, the first several stack frames, and the plugin or package named in those frames. The last line often says only that the server stopped; the first stack frame usually identifies what failed.

What you see Most likely category Next check
A plugin name, dependency class, or repeated plugin exception in the stack trace Plugin or library fault Update or isolate the named plugin and its dependencies
“Watchdog” text, a thread dump, or a message that the server stopped responding Tick stall Read the main-thread stack and profile the stall with spark
No crash report; the panel says killed, exceeded memory, or the process simply disappears Operating-system or container OOM kill Check panel limits and Linux kernel messages
The console resembles an ordinary /stop Graceful or external shutdown Enable debug=true and inspect the next shutdown trace
UnsupportedClassVersionError Java runtime too old for the server or plugin Check java -version and the version required by your server build
“Chunk saved with newer version” or equivalent world-format message World opened by a newer server Use a supported server version and restore a backup before conversion attempts

A delayed failure is not a diagnosis by itself. “It ran for three weeks” describes timing, not cause. A plugin can leak tasks, a world can accumulate a pathological area, a scheduled backup can exhaust a container, or a host can enforce a memory limit only after the heap grows.

3. Isolate plugins and dependencies methodically

If a plugin or one of its classes appears in the stack trace, treat it as the leading suspect. Do not assume the plugin named in the final error is the only problem: a library plugin can break several dependents when it is outdated. Protocol libraries and permission providers are common examples of shared dependencies, so check their versions as well as the application plugin that first reports the error.

Use a controlled binary search

  1. Stop the server and make a fresh backup of the working copy.
  2. Move half of the plugins out of the live plugins directory, keeping their files together in a quarantine folder. Do not delete their data.
  3. Start the server and reproduce the activity that normally precedes the failure, or run it long enough to cover the scheduled task involved.
  4. If the problem remains, the offender is in the half still enabled. If it disappears, the offender is in the quarantined half.
  5. Split the suspect half again and repeat until one plugin or dependency remains.

This is faster and more reliable than removing plugins one at a time, especially on a server with dozens of extensions. Keep a written list of each test and its start time. A plugin that appears stable for an hour has not been proven safe if the original crash took several days; leave the isolated test running through the relevant scheduled interval.

Update without creating a second variable

Download a plugin build that explicitly supports your Minecraft and server version, then test it on the copied instance. Avoid updating the server, Java, and several plugins simultaneously: if the crash stops, you will not know which change mattered. If an update requires a configuration migration, preserve the old configuration and compare the generated file before accepting defaults.

Recognize dependency failures

A stack trace may name a library rather than the feature you were using. Check the dependency’s own error and every plugin that depends on it. If disabling the library makes several plugins fail to load, restore the backup and update the dependency and its dependents as a set. Never replace a shared library with an arbitrary version copied from another server; incompatible APIs can turn a startup warning into a later runtime crash.

4. Diagnose watchdog crashes and stalled ticks

A watchdog report means the server’s main thread failed to respond promptly. The thread dump shows where it was stuck: world generation, chunk loading, entity processing, a plugin task, disk I/O, or another operation. Read the first stack frames of the main thread, not only the list of threads that happened to be waiting.

Paper’s current server.properties reference sets max-tick-time=60000. A single tick lasting more than 60,000 milliseconds is treated as a crash and the server is forcibly shut down. The same reference explains that a normal tick should be no more than 0.05 seconds; the 60-second threshold is a last-resort safety stop, not a performance target. Watchdog messages can appear earlier when the server has already been unresponsive for about 10 seconds, so do not wait for the forced exit before investigating.

Profile before changing the timeout

Use a spark report while the server is healthy and again during the activity that produces the stall. The profile should show which plugin, command, world, or system operation consumes the main-thread time. Save the report with the date and the exact workload, such as a farm activation or a pregeneration job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not present max-tick-time=-1 as a fix. Disabling the watchdog removes the safety shutdown while leaving the blocked operation in place; players may see a frozen server and the host may eventually kill the process anyway. Only use a temporary timeout change for a controlled diagnostic, with a rollback plan and a backup.

Reduce avoidable chunk work

Two settings in the current Paper reference directly control how much terrain a player can keep active:

view-distance=10
simulation-distance=10

Both values are measured in chunks. Lowering them reduces the number of chunks sent to clients or actively simulated, which can relieve a server that stalls under player movement or dense farms. Change one value, restart, and observe the same workload; do not reduce distances blindly if the stack trace points to a specific plugin or disk operation.

5. Find silent operating-system or container OOM kills

Java can be terminated without producing a Minecraft crash report. On Linux, check the kernel log after the event:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
dmesg -T | grep -i killed

Messages mentioning the out-of-memory killer, Java, or your container indicate that the operating system ended the process. A hosting panel may show the same event as “killed,” “memory limit exceeded,” or a process exit with no Java exception.

Leave headroom beyond -Xmx

The heap maximum is not the server’s entire memory footprint. Java, native libraries, thread stacks, direct buffers, the operating system, the panel agent, and filesystem cache also need memory. PaperMC specifically warns that a panel limit set too close to -Xmx can cause an OOM termination. If the panel allows 4 GB and the launch command reserves nearly all 4 GB for Java, the host has no safe margin.

Either lower -Xmx so the process fits comfortably inside the enforced limit, or raise the panel limit while preserving room for the operating system. Make one change, record it, and watch the panel’s actual usage over the period in which the failure previously occurred.

Do not mistake allocated heap for a leak

Java commonly keeps memory it has already allocated so it can reuse it. A large resident process or a heap graph that does not immediately return to the operating system is not proof of a leak. An out-of-memory crash is more often caused by insufficient OS or container headroom, an imposed limit, or a genuine allocation failure shown in the log. Look for an explicit Java heap-space or native allocation error before labeling normal retained heap as a leak.

6. Distinguish a normal shutdown from a crash

Some servers stop cleanly because a panel, scheduled task, administrator, or automation issued the equivalent of /stop. The console may save players and chunks and then exit without a crash report. If the sequence looks normal but no person initiated it, set this line in server.properties:

debug=true

Restart and wait for the next unexplained shutdown. PaperMC says the next shutdown should include a stack trace that helps identify what called the stop path. Correlate its timestamp with panel schedules, operating-system timers, backup jobs, and host maintenance notices. Restore the original setting after diagnosis if you do not need ongoing debug output.

7. Check Java, server, plugin, and world compatibility

Java runtime mismatch

Run the same Java executable used by the startup script:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
java -version

An UnsupportedClassVersionError means the runtime is older than the Java version used to compile the server or plugin. Confirm the Java path in your panel or script, install a supported current runtime for your server build, and restart with that executable. Checking an interactive shell is not enough if the panel launches a different Java binary.

World saved by a newer server

A message that a chunk or world was saved with a newer version means the data was opened by a newer server than the one you are trying to run. PaperMC states that downgrading is unsupported and warns that forcing the load can permanently corrupt the world. Do not bypass the check on your only copy. Restore a backup made before the world was upgraded, or run the world on the newer supported server version after verifying plugin compatibility.

Keep the whole stack aligned

Record the exact Minecraft version, Paper build, Java runtime, and plugin builds together. A server update that is safe for the core may still expose an outdated plugin API; a Java update may alter startup behavior while leaving the world untouched. Change one layer at a time on the copied instance and retain the known-good combination as a rollback point.

8. Review settings that affect long-running workloads

Player activity and chunk load

Use player counts, timings from spark, and the watchdog stack to decide whether distance settings are relevant. A high view distance can increase chunk transmission, while a high simulation distance keeps more entities and redstone active. Lowering both may help a CPU-bound server, but it cannot repair a plugin deadlock or an OOM limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Empty-server pausing

The current Paper reference lists pause-when-empty-seconds=-1, meaning pausing is disabled by default. Paper notes that plugins may be incompatible with pausing. Leave the default while diagnosing unless you have verified every plugin’s behavior; enabling a pause feature can create a new class of timing and task failures that obscures the original issue.

Scheduled jobs

Delayed crashes often line up with tasks that run daily or weekly: map renders, backups, pregeneration, cleanup, or automated restarts. Compare the crash timestamp with plugin schedules and panel cron entries. Temporarily disable one scheduled job on the test copy, then run through its normal interval. A task that works once may still accumulate files, chunks, or memory across repeated runs, so test recurrence rather than a single successful execution.

9. A controlled recovery runbook

Use this order when the cause is still uncertain:

  1. Stop the server and archive the entire directory.
  2. Copy latest.log, the relevant older logs, crash reports, panel events, and kernel messages into an incident folder.
  3. Classify the event as plugin exception, watchdog stall, OOM kill, graceful stop, or version mismatch.
  4. On a copy, remove half the plugins and run a binary-search isolation if a plugin is implicated.
  5. Check Java and server compatibility before changing memory settings.
  6. For a watchdog event, inspect the main-thread stack and capture a spark profile during the workload.
  7. For a silent exit, compare panel limits with -Xmx and leave OS headroom; check dmesg on Linux.
  8. Change one setting or component, restart, and record the result and timestamp.
  9. Keep the backup and the last known-good configuration until the server has passed the original failure window.

This sequence prevents a common mistake: increasing memory to hide a plugin stall, disabling the watchdog to hide a deadlock, or downgrading a world until its data is damaged.

10. Prevent another weeks-later failure

  • Maintain automatic, dated backups of every world and configuration, plus at least one copy outside the live host.
  • Retain compressed logs long enough to cover the entire interval between failures.
  • Monitor process memory, panel memory, CPU, disk space, and restart count rather than Java heap alone.
  • Apply server, Java, and plugin updates first on a staging copy. Keep a written version matrix.
  • Use spark profiles when performance changes, not only after a watchdog crash.
  • Review scheduled tasks and plugin queues after every update.
  • Leave room under the host’s memory cap for the OS and non-heap allocations.
  • Document every change, its exact value, and whether the test reached the former crash interval.

If you cannot provide process supervision, backups, log retention, and a memory limit with headroom, a managed Minecraft host or an administrator who can provide those controls may be more reliable than repeatedly restarting an unmanaged process. The important requirement is not a particular provider; it is verifiable monitoring, recoverable backups, and a limit that does not squeeze Java against the operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. What a useful support report contains

When asking a developer or host for help, send a concise incident bundle rather than a screenshot of the last console line. Include the exact server and Java versions, the complete first exception and stack frames, the watchdog dump if present, the panel termination reason, the relevant dmesg lines, memory arguments, player count, and the plugin list with versions. State what changed since the last stable run and whether the problem reproduces with half the plugins disabled. Remove IP addresses, account tokens, and other secrets before sharing logs.

A report with timestamps lets someone correlate a Minecraft exception with a kernel kill or scheduled task. A report that says only “it crashes after two weeks” does not distinguish any of the failure classes above.
