The test agent’s location and connection, server load, measurement method, and normal run-to-run variation can all change the result. Lab results and real-user Core Web Vitals answer different questions, so compare like with like before changing a plugin, theme, or host.
Why the same WordPress page can get different results
A test measures a particular request under particular conditions. Even when the URL and site code do not change, another run may produce slightly different numbers. WordPress’s performance-measurement guidance recommends using multiple requests rather than trusting one broad-metric run: Best practices for performance measurement.

That variation does not automatically mean your site improved or slowed down. A result is meaningful only alongside its context: where and how it was measured, which metric it represents, and whether the site and method stayed consistent.

How network conditions affect a test
Test location changes the network path
A browser or test agent running far from your server may face more network latency than one closer to it. The path between the test location and your site can therefore affect loading time. PageSpeed Insights runs tests in a Google data center, and the location can vary; its report’s environment details identify the location for that run. See About PageSpeed Insights.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For a site serving a particular audience, a test location should be relevant to that audience or deliberately held constant when comparing changes. A result from one location should not be treated as a universal estimate for every visitor.
Connection profiles and local network variability
Lab tools can use configured or simulated connection profiles. WebPageTest lets you select a location and connection, so changing either changes the scenario being measured. Its landing page describes a default configuration of three test runs; that is a tool default, not a universal sample-size rule. Check the selected settings and run options on WebPageTest.

Real network conditions can also vary because of congestion, packet loss, shared bandwidth, router limits, or prioritization. Lighthouse documents local-network variation and cross-geography latency as sources of measurement variability: Lighthouse variability. But a discrepancy in a remote lab test is not automatically caused by your home Wi-Fi: the test may run elsewhere and use its own environment or connection shaping.

Why lab results and Core Web Vitals may differ
A lab test runs a page under a particular setup. Field data reflects eligible real-user experiences aggregated over time, rather than one controlled visit. PageSpeed Insights can show both kinds of information when available: its lab result is generated in a Google data center, while its field information comes from the Chrome User Experience Report. Google notes that a public URL needs sufficient distinct samples for representative, anonymized field data to appear. The distinction is explained in About PageSpeed Insights.
Field results can shift even if you did not edit the site. The mix of visitors, their devices and networks, traffic levels, or latency from the service delivering images may change. Search Console lists changes such as a larger share of slower-network users and image-service latency among possible reasons for a change in Core Web Vitals status: Core Web Vitals report.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

So “Why might my lab test differ from Core Web Vitals?” has a straightforward answer: the measurements come from different kinds of data and may represent different users, locations, conditions, and time periods. Compare lab with lab and field with field; use each to answer the question it actually measures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to make a fair before-and-after comparison
- Define the question. Record the exact URL and the change you want to evaluate—for example, whether a server-side change reduced response time.
- Hold the site setup steady. Keep the WordPress version, database, content, theme, and active plugins consistent across the comparison. Change only the factor under investigation.
- Fix and record the test environment. Note the test location, browser and device, connection profile, and tool. In WebPageTest, also record the selected location and connection, number of runs, and whether repeat view is enabled.
- Use multiple requests and a consistent summary. Compare the same metric and, where available, a statistic such as the median rather than choosing one favorable run. WordPress’s guidance gives 20 Web Vitals requests and 100 Server-Timing requests as examples for its benchmark commands. These are examples, not a prescription for every site or tool: Best practices for performance measurement.
- Record the method. Keep notes on the tool and its version, settings, and any methodology changes. Otherwise, a change in the test itself can look like a change in site performance.
- Review field data separately. Check whether field information is available, then consider whether the browser, device, location, traffic, or asset-delivery conditions represented in it may have shifted.
- Inspect before making changes. If results disagree, examine the report’s environment details and waterfall before blaming a plugin, theme, or host. Test controls and variance guidance can help narrow the possibilities, but no single report necessarily identifies every cause.
What to check when two reports disagree
- Lab or field: Is one result a controlled run and the other aggregated real-user experience?
- Geography: Where did the test agent run, and is that location relevant to your visitors?
- Network and device: Were connection shaping, browser, or device settings different?
- Repeat strategy: Were the number of runs, first or repeat view, and summary statistic the same?
- Site and server state: Were software, content, theme, plugins, and server load comparable?
- Metric scope: Are you comparing server response or Server-Timing with broader browser metrics such as Web Vitals?
There is no single correct test setup for every WordPress site. Choose settings that fit the question, then preserve them across the comparison.
