If YouTube will not play, first check whether the problem affects one video, one device, or your whole network. Try another video and device, test your connection, and lower playback quality if the video buffers. Then use the browser, app, or TV-specific steps below. The error message matters: a green picture, an unavailable video, and an unsupported app point to different causes.
Start by finding out what is failing
- Try a different YouTube video. If only one video fails, it may be unavailable or restricted.
- Try YouTube on another supported device or browser, if one is available.
- Check whether other websites or streaming services load. If YouTube fails on several devices using the same network, ask your network administrator or internet service provider whether access is restricted. Schools and workplaces may block YouTube.
These checks help narrow the cause; they do not establish that a particular service outage or network block is occurring.

If YouTube videos keep buffering
Test the connection and lower quality
Run a speed test, then compare the result with YouTube’s approximate sustained-speed recommendations for different resolutions. These are guides, not guaranteed minimums for every device or network:

YouTube also lists a 500+ Kbps internet connection as a baseline, but that figure is separate from its resolution-specific recommendations and does not promise HD or 4K playback. See YouTube’s video playback troubleshooting guidance and recommended internet speeds.

In the player, select a lower quality and see whether playback becomes steady. YouTube can also change quality automatically based on connection speed, player or screen size, the source video’s quality, and browser support for newer formats. Close other tabs, browsers, and programs that may be using the connection or device. Restart your connection, or test another supported connection. If your device and network support it, an Ethernet connection can be an optional way to check whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem.
Fix playback in a computer browser
- Close and reopen the browser, then install its current update.
- Close unnecessary tabs and restart the computer.
- If videos still fail, clear the browser’s cache and cookies.
- Open YouTube in a private or incognito window, where extensions are typically disabled. If playback works there, turn extensions back on one at a time to find a conflict. YouTube identifies ad-blocking extensions as one possible factor.

Fix playback in the YouTube mobile app
- Close and reopen the YouTube app.
- Check your device’s app store for an update, then restart the device.
- Try YouTube over another supported internet connection to help isolate a network problem.
- On Android, consider clearing the YouTube app cache in the device’s Settings. The menu path varies by Android version and manufacturer.
YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance describes clearing app cache through device settings. If a menu label differs on your phone, use its Settings search rather than assuming every Android device has the same path.
Fix playback on a TV or streaming device
- Check the device’s internet connection and try a lower playback quality.
- Quit and reopen the YouTube app. If appropriate, sign out and back in.
- Restart or power-cycle the TV or streaming device.
- Check for available YouTube app and device-system updates.
- If the problem continues, test YouTube on another supported device or connection.
If several services fail or the device cannot install software updates, consult the device maker’s support information. YouTube’s troubleshooting page also recommends testing another supported device when playback remains broken.

What specific YouTube errors and symptoms mean
“Playback error. Tap to retry,” “Connection to server lost,” or “Something went wrong. Tap to retry”
Retry once, then use the connection, device, and browser or app checks above. If the message persists, test another video and another supported connection to see whether the issue is limited to a particular video or network.
“This video is unavailable”
If other videos play, the problem may be specific to that video, which may be unavailable or restricted. Try another video before changing device settings.

This message means the app being used does not support YouTube content. Switch to the official YouTube app or youtube.com, and update the YouTube app if possible. Older hardware that cannot run a supported app version may need to use the mobile website. See YouTube’s guidance on unsupported apps.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- Try playing the video in another browser.
- If you use Chrome, turn off hardware acceleration in the browser’s settings and test again.
- Update the graphics driver through the computer manufacturer’s support site or the operating system’s update mechanism.

“Error loading the page” or a temporary server message
Reload the page and try again. If refreshing does not help, wait and retry later. YouTube describes a minimal watch page for rare service interruptions, but this guide does not establish live service status.

If other sites work but YouTube is unavailable across devices on the same network, contact the person or organization managing that network, or your internet provider, to ask whether YouTube access is restricted. If only one video fails while other videos play, focus on that video’s availability rather than repeatedly clearing app or browser data.
