If the remote still navigates Roku but its TV power or volume buttons do not work, troubleshoot TV control—not Roku pairing.
1. Identify the problem and the remote type
Look for a microphone or magnifying-glass button. Roku identifies remotes with those buttons as voice remotes; they may use a wireless connection and do not need to point at the Roku device. A simple remote has no voice button and uses infrared (IR), so it needs a clear line of sight to the player or TV.

- No Roku menus respond: Check the remote’s power and connection, then follow the pairing steps for its type.
- Roku menus respond, but TV power or volume does not: Skip to the TV-control section below. Re-pairing may not address that symptom.
2. Check the remote’s power and restart it
Battery-powered remotes
- Remove both batteries.
- Press any two buttons on the remote.
- Reinstall the batteries and try the remote again.
- If it remains unresponsive, try fresh batteries of the correct type.
Rechargeable remotes
Charge the remote before continuing. Roku’s UK troubleshooting instructions also describe resetting rechargeable models by holding the pairing button for 20 seconds, or holding Back + Home for 20 seconds on models without a pairing button. Remote designs and menu paths vary, so use the procedure that matches your model.

- Unplug the Roku player or TV from power.
- Wait at least five seconds, then reconnect power.
- Wait for the Roku Home screen before testing the remote.
3. Pair a Roku voice remote again
Pairing-button placement varies by remote. With the Roku device on and at its Home screen, use the matching method:

For a simple IR remote
Point the remote directly at the Roku device and remove anything blocking the path. Because the connection uses IR, obstacles between the remote and device can prevent commands from registering.

For wireless pairing
Move the remote closer during pairing and check whether nearby electronics or physical obstacles may be interfering. If you have a Roku Streaming Stick, make sure you are using the wireless receiver built into its USB power cable. Roku says a free HDMI extender can help reduce interference for Streaming Stick owners.

5. Use the Roku mobile app as a fallback
The Roku app can control a Roku device when its remote is unavailable. The phone and Roku must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and mobile-app control may need to be enabled in the Roku settings. If you cannot connect the app, check both requirements before concluding that it cannot serve as a temporary remote.
6. Fix TV power or volume buttons separately
If the remote navigates Roku menus, it is communicating with the Roku device. If only the TV’s power or volume buttons fail, redo the remote’s TV-control setup instead of repeating Roku pairing. Roku describes IR and HDMI-CEC control options, but not every TV supports every control.

If your Roku player connects through a soundbar or receiver, temporarily connect it directly to the TV while setting up TV control. Once setup works, you can restore your usual connection and check whether the soundbar or receiver affects control.
7. Check compatibility before replacing the remote
Consider a replacement only after checking power, restarting the Roku, and trying the appropriate pairing or TV-control steps. Compatibility depends on the exact Roku device model. Roku says voice remotes are supported on devices shipped since 2017 and certain older models; check Roku’s compatibility information for your specific model before buying a replacement.
