1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMost photo-transfer problems come down to a permission prompt, the phone’s USB mode, a cable that only charges, or originals that are stored in the cloud rather than on the phone. The right fix depends on whether you use an iPhone or Android phone and a Mac, Windows PC, or Chromebook. Start with the matching steps below.
First, check how you are trying to transfer the pictures
If you connected the phone with a cable, keep it unlocked and look for a prompt on the phone or computer. A device that is charging is not necessarily ready to transfer files. If you are using a cloud service, check that photo backup or sync is enabled and that the account has enough storage.

- iPhone or iPad: Check for a request to trust or allow the computer, then follow the Apple workflow for your computer.
- Android: Change the USB connection from charging to File Transfer.
- Either platform: Try another USB port or a cable that supports data if the computer does not detect the phone.
Transfer iPhone or iPad photos to a Mac
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Mac with USB. If the Mac asks whether to allow the accessory, allow it.
- Unlock the device with its passcode if prompted. If asked whether to trust the computer, tap Trust.
- Open the Photos app and select the device in the sidebar. If the Import screen does not appear automatically, choose the device there.
- Import the pictures and wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting.
To import directly into a folder instead of the Photos library, Apple also documents Image Capture as an option. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad photo-transfer instructions.
Transfer iPhone or iPad photos to a Windows PC
- Install the Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad, unlock it if asked, and tap Trust or Allow if that prompt appears.
- Use the Microsoft Photos app to import the pictures, following Apple’s Windows import guidance.
If some pictures are missing or will not import
With iCloud Photos enabled, the full-resolution originals may not be stored on the iPhone or iPad. Download those originals to the device before importing them to the PC. Apple’s instructions also describe Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible for future photos intended for Windows compatibility; new captures use JPEG and H.264 with that setting. It does not convert photos already taken.

- Try a different USB cable and port. Google warns, “Not all USB cables can transfer files.” A cable that charges the phone may not support data transfer.
- Confirm the phone is unlocked and, on Android, that File Transfer is selected.
- Restart the computer. On Windows, check whether it detects new hardware.
- Update and restart the phone, then reconnect it.
- If possible, test with another cable or another device to help identify whether the problem follows the phone, cable, or computer.
A replacement USB data-transfer cable is worth considering only if the current cable is charge-only or faulty. Check that the connector fits your devices and that the cable supports data; a new cable will not resolve a missing Trust prompt, the wrong Android USB mode, or cloud-only originals.

Cloud services can make photos available on a computer without importing over USB, but they require the service to be set up and adequate account storage. Choose this route if you want photos to become available across devices; choose direct USB import for a one-time copy without relying on a cloud account.

|---|---|---|
| USB import | Copies photos directly from the phone to the computer. | The phone is recognized, required prompts are accepted, Android is set to File Transfer, and the files are available locally when needed. |
| iCloud Photos | Keeps originals available across Apple devices, iCloud.com, and PC; it can sync photos to a Mac when enabled. | iCloud Photos is set up and the account has enough storage for the collection. |
| Google Photos backup | Backs up items to a Google Account so they can be accessed from signed-in devices. | Backup is enabled and the Google Account has enough space. Storage is shared across Photos, Drive, and Gmail. |
Apple documents iCloud Photos and photo transfer. Google explains Google Photos backup, account storage, and supported files. Do not assume that a synchronized library is an independent backup: understand how deletions behave in your particular setup before relying on it to preserve a separate copy.
