An M18 battery does not provide USB or household AC output by itself. You need a power accessory designed for the battery platform and the output you need. First check the exact model number on the adapter or inverter: compatibility with M18 tools or chargers does not automatically mean an accessory—especially a third-party one—will work.
First, identify what you mean by “USB adapter or inverter”
A USB power source and an AC inverter do different jobs. Milwaukee’s M18 TOP-OFF Charger & Power Supply (2847-20) provides USB-A and USB-C output for compatible devices. The M18 CARRY-ON (2845-20) provides household AC through an inverter and also has USB ports. An M18 battery alone is not either of these power sources.

These products are not interchangeable: choose by output type and the exact accessory model, not merely by the M18 name. Milwaukee’s M18 battery information describes compatibility with M18 tools and chargers; check the accessory’s own compatibility statement rather than assuming that a physically fitting battery makes an adapter electrically compatible.
Why an M18 USB adapter may not charge a device
For the 2847-20 TOP-OFF, Milwaukee’s troubleshooting guidance identifies several possibilities: the battery is drained, the device demand exceeds the port’s rating, the unit is too hot, or the cable or adapter is faulty. A phone or other device not charging does not, by itself, establish that the battery is defective.

- Battery charge: Check the M18 pack’s fuel gauge and try a properly charged battery.
- Port and device demand: Check the accessory and device manuals and use a port whose rating suits the device. Milwaukee’s guide directs users to the 100 W port when a device exceeds a rating.
- Temperature: If the TOP-OFF is hot, let it cool before trying again.
- Cable and connections: Check that the connections are secure and the cable or adapter is functioning. Use a known-good compatible cable where the manual permits.
Reset the TOP-OFF USB-C ports
If USB-C on the 2847-20 remains unresponsive, Milwaukee’s documented reset is to remove the battery and cable for five seconds, reconnect them, and try again. The manufacturer’s troubleshooting guide says: “To reset the USB-C ports, remove the battery and the cable for 5 seconds and try again.”
Why an M18 inverter may not run your equipment
Confirm that you have an inverter designed for M18 batteries, then compare the equipment’s requirements with the inverter’s exact manual and ratings. The 2845-20 CARRY-ON is Milwaukee’s M18 option for AC output; its published rating is 3,600 starting watts and 1,800 running watts. Those are product specifications, not a guarantee that every appliance will start or run: check the connected equipment’s startup and operating demands and follow the inverter manual.

If your accessory is third-party or its model is unclear, a battery that fits is not enough to establish compatibility. The available Milwaukee product information does not define a universal pinout or safety rule for unspecified adapters. Do not open a battery pack, bridge contacts, or improvise wiring.

Safe troubleshooting order
- Read the labels. Record the battery, accessory, and connected device model numbers. Check that the accessory is made for the battery family and provides the output you need.
- Check battery charge. Use the pack’s fuel gauge and, if needed, test with a properly charged M18 battery.
- Check output limits. For a 2847-20, confirm the selected port suits the device and its demand; follow the accessory and device manuals.
- Check temperature and connections. Let a hot accessory cool, inspect connections, and check the cable or adapter using a known-good compatible one where allowed.
- Reset USB-C if applicable. On a 2847-20, disconnect the battery and cable for five seconds, then reconnect and retry.
- Escalate with the model details. If the problem remains, consult the exact manual or Milwaukee support and have the catalog/model and serial numbers available.
When the battery or accessory may need service
The cause cannot be identified from the symptom alone. The battery and accessory model numbers, device and port used, charge state, and any indicator lights or observed behavior matter. If a known-compatible accessory still fails after the checks above, use the product manual and Milwaukee’s support or service path rather than opening the pack or attempting an electrical workaround.
