When an LG Smart TV won’t get online, the fault is usually in one of four places: the TV, the Wi-Fi link between the TV and your router, the router’s own settings (including DNS), or your internet service provider (ISP). The fastest way to tell them apart is to test another device on the same network and then a phone hotspot, before you change anything on the TV. The steps below follow that order, then cover the menu paths for each webOS generation, the status messages that point to a specific link, and when to escalate.
Start with two isolation tests
- Try another device on the same Wi-Fi. Connect a phone or laptop to the same network and load a website. If that device also fails, the problem is most likely the router or your ISP rather than the TV. Restart your modem and router, and if other devices still fail, contact your ISP.
- If only the TV fails, test a phone hotspot. Turn on your phone’s hotspot, connect the TV to it, and open an internet-dependent app. LG USA Support states: “If it connects successfully to the hotspot, your TV is working properly, and the issue may be related to your internet service provider (ISP) or router.” If the TV reaches the hotspot but its apps and network functions still fail, LG says the TV may need inspection and recommends contacting support. Keep this test short, because streaming over a mobile plan uses your data allowance, and results can differ between phones and carriers.
Read the network status screen
LG’s network status view checks the connection in sequence: TV, gateway, DNS, and internet. The point where it stops tells you which link to examine first. The table below shows how to read each break point. The guidance is LG’s sequence applied in practical order, not a separate diagnosis from LG.

| Status stops at | What it suggests | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| TV | The TV has not joined a network | Network name, password capitalization, Wi-Fi range, and whether the Wi-Fi menu is enabled |
| Gateway | The TV connects locally but cannot reach the router | Router placement, distance, obstacles, and cable connections; restart the modem and router |
| DNS | The router responds but names are not resolving | Router-provided DNS; manual DNS is an advanced option covered below |
| Internet | Local links work but the connection to the internet does not | ISP line status and router error; contact your ISP if the fault persists |
Understand “connected but no internet”
LG Spain separates “not connected” from “connected but without internet.” In the second case the TV has a Wi-Fi or cable link, but the router is not providing internet access. LG’s guide lists three possible causes: DNS delivered by the router, a temporary DSL or fiber line outage, or a router error. If you see this status, restart the router, test another device, and contact your ISP if the trouble continues.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReconnect the TV to Wi-Fi
Before reconnecting, confirm the exact network name (SSID) and the password, which is case-sensitive. Then open the Wi-Fi menu for your TV’s model year. Menu routes differ by webOS generation:

| Model year | webOS generation | Wi-Fi path listed by LG USA |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 and later | webOS 6.0 or later | Settings → All Settings → General → Network → Internet Connection → Wi-Fi Connection |
| 2020 | webOS 5.0 | Settings → All Settings → Connection → Network Connection Settings → Wi-Fi Connection |
| 2019 and earlier | webOS 4.5 (path as LG lists it) | Settings → All Settings → Connection → Wi-Fi Connection |
| 2018 and earlier | Before webOS 4.0 | Settings → All Settings → Network → Wi-Fi Connection |
LG notes that these model-year labels overlap in its published descriptions and that newer software can change menu routes. If your screens differ from the table, check the support page for your exact model.
- Open Settings and choose All Settings.
- Follow the path for your model year to Wi-Fi Connection.
- Select your network name from the list. If no networks appear, see the escalation section below.
- Enter the password, matching capital letters exactly.
- Wait for the TV to report a connection, then reopen the network status screen to check each step in the sequence.
Use a wired Ethernet connection
LG supports a wired connection. Connect the TV’s LAN port to an internet-connected router using a Cat5-or-higher cable with RJ45 connectors, as LG’s setup guidance specifies. The TV enables wired networking through its Network settings. If the TV works on Ethernet but not on Wi-Fi, the fault lies in the wireless link. If neither works, the router or ISP is the more likely cause. A wired connection does not fix an ISP outage or a failed router.
Fix weak or unstable Wi-Fi
Distance, walls, and obstacles
LG USA lists distance, walls and obstacles, incorrect settings, and an incorrect password among the likely causes of Wi-Fi trouble. Moving the router closer to the TV, or reducing the number of walls between them, is the first fix to try.

2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands
LG’s webOS network setup guidance notes that 2.4 GHz can suffer interference from other devices using that frequency, while interference is less likely at 5 GHz. Wireless conditions and incorrect access-point or security settings can also affect performance. In general, 5 GHz resists interference better but covers less distance through walls, so the better band depends on where the TV sits relative to the router.
Channel width and router settings
LG Spain’s regional guide recommends checking signal strength and channel congestion, and it discusses channel-width settings for 2.4 GHz. These are suggestions from a Spanish regional guide, not universal settings for every router or TV model. Consult your ISP or router documentation before changing advanced settings.
Wi-Fi extenders
LG USA says an extender may improve range but can cause slower speeds or unstable service, depending on the environment. Moving the router or using an Ethernet cable is the more reliable fix where practical.

Try manual DNS (advanced)
LG provides instructions for editing DNS manually, organized by webOS generation, and lists 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 as examples of public DNS servers. Use this only after the basic checks above have failed. It is not a guaranteed fix, and it is not a required setting for most home networks.

If one app fails while other network functions work, LG says the problem is likely with that app. Check for an app update, contact the app provider, and reinstall the app if the problem continues. Do not reset the whole TV for a single-app failure.
When to escalate and when to reset
- No Wi-Fi networks appear, or the Wi-Fi menu is disabled: LG says service may be needed, so contact LG support.
- The hotspot test fails for apps and network functions: LG recommends contacting support so the TV can be inspected.
- Factory reset: Use this only as a late step. A factory reset removes account settings and installed apps, so you will need to sign back in and reinstall apps afterward. Avoid repeated resets before the isolation tests and status checks are complete.
