Why Won’t My Camera Autofocus With a Teleconverter?

A teleconverter can reduce autofocus performance—or prevent AF altogether. Check exact gear compatibility, calculate effective aperture, and test in good light.

A teleconverter can stop autofocus because the lens-and-converter combination is not supported, or because the converter reduces the effective maximum aperture and the camera has too little light or a focus-point limitation. Which explanation applies depends on the exact camera, lens, converter, and mount. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility chart or manuals for those exact models before treating the problem as a camera fault.

How a teleconverter can affect autofocus

A teleconverter magnifies the image and reduces the light reaching the camera. It also makes the lens’s effective maximum aperture smaller: multiply the lens’s widest f-number by the converter’s magnification factor. For example, an f/4 lens with a 1.4x converter has an effective maximum aperture of about f/5.6; with a 2x converter, about f/8.

Nikon’s general examples illustrate the light loss: a 1.4x converter costs one stop, a 1.7x costs one and a half stops, and a 2x costs two stops. An f/2.8 lens therefore becomes effectively f/4, f/4.5, or f/5.6, respectively. These are Nikon examples, not a guarantee that autofocus will work on every camera system or combination. Nikon’s teleconverter guidance explains the aperture trade-off.

As the effective aperture gets smaller, some cameras may limit which AF points are available or struggle to acquire focus, especially in dim light or on a low-contrast subject. There is no universal f/5.6 or f/8 cutoff that applies to every camera. For example, Nikon’s D7500 manual describes center-point-only autofocus when the combined aperture is slower than f/5.6 but equal to or faster than f/8, and warns that focusing may fail on dark or low-contrast subjects in that condition. The D780 manual gives a separate warning for some combinations slower than f/5.6. Those conditions apply to the named Nikon bodies, not all cameras. D7500 manual · D780 manual

Compatibility can disable autofocus completely

Teleconverters are not universal spacers. Lens design, converter contacts and mechanics, mount, and camera support all affect whether autofocus is available. A combination can be physically attachable yet still have limited autofocus—or no autofocus at all. Nikon’s F-mount compatibility chart separates AF limitations from combinations where AF is not possible and includes body-specific footnotes. Its Z-system guidance likewise says not every NIKKOR Z lens is compatible with Nikon Z converters. Nikon F-mount teleconverter compatibility chart · Nikon Z teleconverter guidance

Brightness alone cannot fix an unsupported combination. Nikon’s D780 manual, for instance, lists its AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED as an exception for autofocus with teleconverters and identifies other combinations with no AF. If your exact pairing is listed as incompatible, changing focus-area settings or moving to brighter light will not make autofocus supported.

Diagnose the problem in this order

  1. Write down every model. Record the camera body, complete lens name, teleconverter model and magnification, mount, and any adapter. Compatibility is specific to the combination.
  2. Check the exact manufacturer compatibility reference. Use the camera and converter maker’s chart or manuals. Look for distinctions such as “AF limitations” versus “AF not possible,” plus footnotes about supported bodies, focus points, and conditions. Do not assume that another lens from the same line behaves identically.
  3. Work out the effective maximum aperture. Multiply the lens’s widest f-number by the converter factor. For example, f/4 × 1.4 is approximately f/5.6, while f/4 × 2 is approximately f/8. Compare that result with the limits and notes in your camera’s manual.
  4. Test in favorable conditions. Try a bright, well-lit, detailed, high-contrast subject and a focus point the manual says is available for your combination. If the camera focuses there but hunts on a dim or plain subject, light and contrast may be contributing.
  5. Check controls and connection. Confirm autofocus is enabled on both camera and lens, the selected AF mode and area are supported, and the converter is fully seated. Check contacts for visible dirt, following the equipment maker’s cleaning guidance; do not scrape or abrade them.
  6. Isolate the converter. Remove it and try the lens directly on the camera. If AF returns, the converter combination or its effect on aperture is implicated. If AF still fails, the fault may lie elsewhere in the camera, lens, settings, or connection. Use manual focus if suitable and permitted, and consult the exact model’s manual or manufacturer support if the cause remains unclear.

What to weigh when choosing a compatible converter

Compare options only after confirming support for your exact lens and body. A 2x converter gives more magnification than a 1.4x, but costs more light; Nikon also flags possible sharpness loss as a consideration for its Z converters. Check the resulting effective aperture, autofocus status and point restrictions, and the conditions in which AF is expected to work—not just the focal-length gain. Nikon’s Z converter overview discusses the 1.4x and 2x options and these trade-offs.

If your setup is from Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, OM System, a third-party lens maker, or uses an adapter, use that system’s own compatibility documentation. Nikon’s examples can explain the general aperture effect, but they cannot establish whether another brand’s exact combination supports autofocus.
