Before connecting an AI client, limit the WordPress abilities it can discover, enforce authorization inside each ability, and give the connection a dedicated account with only the required capabilities. Choose STDIO for local WP-CLI development or HTTP through a remote proxy when remote access is needed; HTTP is not secure by itself, so protect its authentication and restrict what the endpoint exposes.
1. Inventory every ability the client can reach
The WordPress MCP Adapter maps WordPress Abilities into MCP tools and other primitives. In the default server, an ability is exposed only when its registration explicitly marks it public for MCP access with meta.mcp.public. That flag controls discoverability; it is not an authorization check.

Before enabling an ability, record what it reads, what it can change, and the minimum WordPress capability that should authorize it. Treat every exposed ability as part of the site’s application attack surface. Do not mark abilities public indiscriminately, especially if they can publish, edit, delete, or change site settings.
- For each ability, document its data access and possible side effects.
- Decide which WordPress capability is necessary for that operation.
- Expose only the abilities the client actually needs.
- For read-only context, consider whether an MCP resource is more suitable than an executable tool.
The WordPress Developer Blog explains the adapter’s exposure model in From Abilities to AI Agents: Introducing the WordPress MCP Adapter.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
2. Enforce permissions inside each ability
Every ability should enforce authorization on the server, even if the client interface hides it or the ability is not normally offered to that client. Implement a careful permission_callback and check the least-privileged capability that matches the operation. WordPress’s examples include manage_options and edit_posts; the right choice depends on what the ability does.
As the WordPress Developer Blog puts it, “Each ability should check the minimum capability needed (manage_options, edit_posts, etc.).” Avoid permissive callbacks such as __return_true for destructive operations. A tool’s presence or absence in an AI client’s list is not a substitute for server-side checks.

3. Use a dedicated WordPress identity
Connect the MCP client with a dedicated WordPress user or role, not an administrator account used for unrelated work. Grant only the capabilities needed by the exposed abilities. A separate identity makes actions easier to attribute and limits the authority available if the credential is misused or the client behaves unexpectedly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not connect an unaudited client to powerful abilities or a broadly privileged account. If the use case can be served with read-only abilities—particularly for a remotely reachable endpoint—keep it read-only.

4. Choose transport for the deployment
WordPress documents two common patterns: STDIO through WP-CLI for local development, and HTTP through the @automattic/mcp-wordpress-remote proxy for a publicly accessible WordPress site or a connection that cannot use STDIO. The transport choice changes where the connection runs and how it is reached; neither option removes the need for authorization and a narrow exposure policy.
| Transport | Documented use | Security decision |
|---|---|---|
| STDIO through WP-CLI | Local development | Keep the client and WordPress command-line connection within the intended local workflow, and still constrain the account and abilities. |
| HTTP through a remote proxy | Remote access to publicly accessible WordPress sites or non-STDIO connections | Plan authentication deliberately, expose only necessary abilities, and prefer read-only access where it meets the need. |
The WordPress walkthrough describes these transport options and authentication at the MCP Adapter article. It does not prescribe a universal firewall, proxy, TLS, or network-allowlist configuration; those decisions depend on the site’s deployment.

5. Protect credentials and know how to revoke them
The MCP Adapter article identifies WordPress application passwords as the default authentication method and says OAuth or other methods can be implemented. Store whichever credential the deployment uses securely, and avoid placing secrets in shared client settings or other locations accessible to people or processes that do not need them.

- A FIDO security key with PUF technology provides a unique, hardware-rooted trust anchor that resists tampering and cyber attacks, offering stronger security than conventional designs.
- FIDO2 Certified Protection – Enjoy phishing-resistant security with FIDO2 certification, ensuring top-tier account safety across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS iOS, Android and more.
- Easy to use & Portable – Designed with a compact USB-C interface, Clife key fits easily on your keychain for secure access anywhere. Simply plug in and authenticate with ease.
- Universal Compatibility – Works seamlessly with hundreds of FIDO2/U2F compliant services, including popular cloud, email, and social platforms.
- Backup recommended – To ensure continuous access, register a backup Clife security key as a spare in case your primary key is lost.
When replacing a credential, update the client configuration to use the new one. When the integration is no longer needed, revoke its access using the mechanism for that deployment. See the WordPress.org MCP handbook for its authorization details.
6. Monitor use and review AI-generated work
Log and monitor MCP activity so you can review what the client called and investigate unexpected behavior. Use error and observability handlers that fit the site’s existing monitoring stack. Monitoring complements—not replaces—least privilege and authorization checks.
Review the client’s actions and generated output before relying on changes. For plugin development, the WordPress.org handbook says AI-assisted submissions receive the same review as other submissions and developers remain responsible for reviewing generated work.
