An iPhone backup that will not restore from a Windows PC can fail for several different reasons: the phone may not be detected, an encrypted backup may require a password, the backup may be unusable, or an app, connection, or Windows issue may interrupt the process. Start with the exact alert or error code. Apple’s documented Windows workflow now uses the Apple Devices app; iTunes remains an option if Apple Devices is not installed.
First, identify where the restore stops
Note the exact alert text or error code, and when it appears: before you select a backup, while entering a password, or during the transfer. Those details help distinguish a device-recognition problem from an encrypted-backup problem or an interrupted restore. Apple’s error guidance assigns different remedies to different codes, so “it won’t restore” alone is not enough to identify the cause.

Also check which Windows app you are using. Apple’s Apple Devices guide for Windows documents the current app workflow. Apple’s computer-backup support article also refers to iTunes for PCs that do not have Apple Devices.
Check the iPhone connection and trust prompts
If the iPhone does not appear in Apple Devices or iTunes, or you cannot select it, the immediate problem is recognition—not proof that the backup is corrupt. Unlock the phone, connect it to the PC, enter its passcode if prompted, and tap “Trust This Computer” if that prompt appears. Then select the device and follow the restore workflow in the app.

If it still is not recognized, restart the iPhone and PC, reconnect the phone, and try again. For an error Apple identifies as USB-related, try the supplied cable or another Apple-certified cable, a different USB port, and then another computer if needed. These steps apply to the relevant USB errors; they are not a universal fix for every restore failure. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad restore error guidance for code-specific steps.
Update Windows and the Apple app
Out-of-date software can prevent a restore from proceeding. Apple advises updating the PC and Apple Devices or iTunes. If an alert says the iPhone’s software is too old for the computer’s Apple software, update the device as Apple directs, then try again.
- Install available Windows updates.
- Update Apple Devices or iTunes, depending on which app you use.
- Reconnect the unlocked iPhone, respond to any passcode or trust prompt, and try the restore again.

If the restore asks for an encrypted-backup password, you need the password that was set when that backup was made. Apple states, “You can’t restore an encrypted backup without its password.” Resetting the encryption password does not unlock an existing backup.

On devices running iOS 11 or later, or iPadOS, resetting all settings can reset the password for future encrypted backups; it does not recover access to an old backup. If the password is unavailable, look for another computer backup or an iCloud backup instead. Apple explains the password limitation and available steps in its encrypted-backup password guidance.
Understand a “corrupt or incompatible” backup alert
An alert that a backup is corrupt or incompatible points to a different problem from a forgotten password or an unrecognized phone. First update the PC and Apple app, and check whether the iPhone needs a software update. Then try another computer backup or an iCloud backup, if one is available.
If the same backup still cannot be restored, it may not be usable. Apple cautions: “If you still can’t restore the backup, you may not be able to use that backup.” Do not assume that changing cables or resetting the encrypted-backup password will repair a backup that Apple identifies as corrupt or incompatible.
Check disk space and security software when symptoms fit
Not enough space on the PC
Apple lists insufficient computer disk space as a possible obstacle. Free space on the PC and retry the operation. The cited Apple guidance does not establish moving the backup to an external drive as a fix for a failed restore.

iTunes stops responding or a backup hangs
Apple says Windows security software may need updating, changing, disabling, or uninstalling if iTunes does not respond or a backup never finishes. Treat this as a targeted check for those symptoms, not as the presumed cause of every restore failure. Follow Apple’s security-software guidance for iTunes on Windows before changing security settings.
Use the error code to check USB, server, or hardware problems
Some restore errors point to Apple-server connectivity, USB, security software, or possible hardware trouble. Match the exact code to Apple’s restore error list and use the steps for that code. If Apple identifies a USB error, try a known-good Apple-certified cable and another port; if the error persists, test another computer. An ongoing problem may require further USB, security-software, or hardware checks.
Choose the next step based on what you found
- The phone is missing from the app: focus on unlocking, trusting, reconnecting, and restarting the devices before troubleshooting the backup file.
- The app requests an encryption password: use the original password or locate another available backup; resetting settings will not unlock this one.
- The alert says corrupt or incompatible: update the PC and app, check device software, and try another computer backup or iCloud if available.
- The error code points to USB or a server: follow Apple’s steps for that code rather than applying generic fixes.
- The operation hangs or iTunes stops responding: check available PC disk space and, for those symptoms, Apple’s Windows security-software guidance.
If those options fail, or the iPhone has a separate device problem, contact Apple Support. Apple’s Windows guide also describes factory-restoring a device and then restoring a recent backup as an advanced option for problems that remain after a backup restore. Before taking that step, confirm which backups are available and understand that it is a separate device restore, not a way to recover an unusable or password-locked backup.
