When HBO Max stops working, first identify whether the problem is opening the app, playing a video, buffering, or signing in. Try the low-risk checks first: close and reopen the app, check for app and device updates, and restart the device. If a video buffers, test the connection; if you cannot sign in, check account access and subscription eligibility instead of repeatedly changing network settings.
Some official help pages and app screens may still use the name Max during the service’s name transition. Menu labels and steps vary by device, so use the official instructions for your device and region.

Start with the symptom and how widely it occurs
Before resetting anything, note what fails and where. Does the app fail to open, or can you browse but not play? Does one title fail, or do all titles? Does the issue happen on one device or on several devices using the same network? Those distinctions help separate an app or device problem from a connection, title, sign-in, or subscription issue.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- App will not open or freezes: start with app and device updates, then restart the device.
- Videos buffer or pause: check connection speed and stability, and compare another device on the same network.
- One show or movie fails: try a different title before changing account or network settings.
- Sign-in or subscription error: check credentials and, for provider-billed access, whether the package includes the service.
The Max Help Center’s instructions are available at Troubleshoot the Max app or Max.com.

If the app will not open, freezes, or behaves unpredictably
- Update the app and your device. Check the device’s official app store for an app update, and install any available operating-system update. The exact menu names depend on the device.
- Close and reopen the app. If that does not help, sign out, fully restart the device, then sign back in and retry. The Max Help Center’s phone and tablet instructions specify waiting 10 seconds before turning the device back on; follow the device-specific directions for other hardware.
- On Android or Fire devices, consider clearing the app cache. Cache and storage controls differ across versions. Clearing app data or storage is a stronger step: it may sign you out and remove local app state, so try it only after simpler steps.
- Reinstall only if needed. Remove the app and reinstall it from the device’s official app store if updating and restarting have not resolved the issue.
If HBO Max works in the app but fails in a browser
Use a supported, up-to-date browser. The Max Help Center lists current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge for Windows, and Safari; check its browser troubleshooting guidance for the current requirements.
- Open a private or incognito window and try playback again.
- If playback works there, an extension, ad blocker, cookie, or cached site data may be interfering. Check extensions and cookies, then clear the browser cache and cookies if needed.
- Retry in a supported browser after updating it.
The referenced Max.com help page states a maximum supported display resolution of 1080p and notes that a higher-resolution display may cause full-screen or clipping issues. Because this is browser-specific guidance that can change, verify the current official page if you encounter that symptom.

Check speed and competing network use
Run a connection-speed test on the device or network you use for streaming. The Max Help Center says at least 5 Mbps download speed is needed for HD streaming and recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K. These are the service’s guidance, not results from an independent test; actual playback can also depend on connection stability and other network activity.

Restart the network and compare devices
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect the modem first.
- After the modem is online, reconnect the router and retry playback.
- Try HBO Max on another supported device using the same network.
If playback fails on several devices on that network, the connection is a stronger suspect; if only one device is affected, focus on that device or its app. This comparison narrows the likely cause but does not prove it.
Try a wired connection if your device supports it
If the streaming device has an Ethernet port, connect it to the router and test playback over a wired connection. Check that both cable ends are secure. This is an optional diagnostic for Wi-Fi instability, not a guaranteed fix. See the Max Help Center’s buffering and connection steps.

Check provider-billed access
If you get access through a TV, internet, mobile, or other provider, confirm that the service is included in your package and connect or verify the provider account as prompted. Package eligibility and verification steps vary by provider and region. Use the official guidance for sign-in problems and connecting a provider.
When to contact support
Contact HBO Max support if the issue continues after the relevant basic checks, if you cannot access the account email, or if an error affects only one title. Include the exact displayed error text or code, the affected device, whether other titles work, and whether the problem also occurs on another device. These details help distinguish an account, device, network, or title-specific issue.
The help pages linked here do not establish whether there is a current widespread outage. Check current official service communications for outage information rather than assuming a local failure is a service-wide incident.
