A computer’s USB port charges a phone while the computer is off only if that system supplies standby power to that specific port and supports charging in that power state. Try a port marked with a charging or battery symbol, or check the computer’s manual for a setting such as “Always On USB.” If neither is available, use a dedicated USB wall charger.
Why the port stops charging when the computer is off
A USB connector does not guarantee that power will remain available after shutdown. The computer must keep power supplied to the port in standby, and the port must support charging in the computer’s current power state. USB Power Delivery is a power-delivery capability; its existence does not mean every computer port stays powered when the host is off. “Off” can also mean different things. A computer that is asleep or hibernating may behave differently from one that has shut down. Whether a port charges can depend on the computer model, the particular port, its firmware settings, and the power state.
Check whether your computer supports charging while off
- Confirm the power state. Make sure the computer is shut down, rather than sleeping or hibernating. If the phone charges in one state but not another, the distinction may explain the behavior.
- Find the exact model’s official documentation. Search its manual or support page for terms such as “Always On USB,” “USB charging,” or “Sleep-and-Charge.” Similar feature names do not guarantee identical behavior across manufacturers or models.
- Inspect the ports. Look for a battery or charging symbol beside a USB port, then test that port. Lenovo documents a battery-icon indicator on some supported ideapads, but this is not a universal marking system. Lenovo’s instructions for supported ideapad models explain its model-specific Always On USB feature.
- Follow the model’s instructions for any charging setting. For example, Sony’s VAIO guide describes enabling USB charging on some systems in off, hibernate, or sleep states. ASUS documents a different implementation in which some ports may supply power regardless of a particular S4/S5 power setting. What to do if the phone still will not charge
If the manual does not identify an off-state charging port or a relevant setting, the computer may simply stop supplying power when shut down. That symptom alone does not establish that the USB port is broken. To charge without turning on the computer, use a dedicated USB wall charger and a cable compatible with your phone. Do not assume a computer port will charge as quickly as a wall charger: the available sources do not establish a universal charge rate for computer USB ports. Microsoft’s stated 500 mA default-port figure is part of its Windows 10 desktop USB charging requirements, not a measured output for every current computer. Microsoft’s platform requirements
