Sometimes—but “AI-powered” antivirus cannot be assumed to detect every malicious file, and malware does not become invisible simply because AI helped create or modify it. Detection depends on what evidence a security tool can observe and whether the malware evades that tool. The available evidence does not establish a universal detection rate or show that AI-generated malware routinely bypasses current consumer antivirus products.
Why AI-generated malware is not automatically invisible
“AI-generated” describes how code was produced; it is not, by itself, a verdict on whether antivirus will detect it. A scanner’s result depends on the evidence it can examine and how the malicious file or activity behaves. AI assistance alone does not prove that a sample defeats a scanner.

It also helps to separate three different ideas: machine learning used by a defensive product, generative AI used to create or alter malicious code, and deliberate attempts to fool a machine-learning classifier. Those are related, but they are not interchangeable. NIST’s 2025 taxonomy of adversarial machine learning describes risks including evasion and poisoning, along with possible mitigations and their limitations. That establishes risks to machine-learning systems; it does not show that ordinary AI-assisted malware necessarily constitutes an adversarial example or will bypass antivirus.

What the evidence says about machine learning and malware detection
Malware classification is among the applications in which machine-learning attacks have been studied. NIST’s 2024 report includes malware classification in its discussion of poisoning research. This shows that the area is relevant to machine-learning security, not that a particular antivirus product is effective or ineffective.

Machine learning can also support defenses. A NIST publication on algorithmically generated domain detection describes machine-learning-based detection related to domains used by malware such as botnets. That is an example involving network-domain signals, not a test of endpoint antivirus against an AI-authored executable.
What “AI-powered antivirus” can and cannot promise
The label does not establish how a product detects threats or guarantee that it will catch a particular file. The sources available here do not provide a current, independent, product-by-product comparison using AI-generated or AI-modified malware samples. There is therefore no supported brand ranking or detection percentage to give.

For a meaningful product comparison, look for independent testing that explains how it defines AI-generated samples, what file and behavior signals it covers, how it handles false positives, which platforms and regions were tested, and when the tests were run. Also check whether a result concerns endpoint files or network activity; success in one area does not establish performance in the other.

For an organization responding to a suspected incident, detection is only part of the work. NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence describes identifying an attack’s source and affected systems, collecting data to assess impact, and responding quickly in its data-integrity project. This is incident-response guidance, not a claim that every consumer antivirus product includes those capabilities.
