The available reports do not provide a current, like-for-like comparison of infection rates on the two platforms, so raw totals cannot tell an individual user how likely they are to be hit. Mac malware is real; the numbers simply do not justify panic—or a claim that Macs are immune.
What a malware count can—and cannot—tell you
Security labs and vendors count things such as files, variants, detections, and potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). Those measures depend on what each organization collects and how it classifies samples. Near-identical variants can count separately, and some collected samples may be short-lived or categorized as adware or bundled software rather than malware.

AV-TEST says it registers more than 450,000 new malicious programs and potentially unwanted applications each day. That is the institute’s collection statistic, not a count of daily infections or of lasting new threats. The reports discussed here do not provide that. A larger pile of collected files, by itself, does not establish a higher per-user infection rate.

What the Mac malware test actually measured
AV-Comparatives conducted its 2025 Mac malware-protection test in May, using 899 recent and representative Mac malware samples. It had collected thousands of unique Mac samples in the first half of the year, but noted that some could be PUAs and that minor modifications can produce near-identical variants. The organization described the 899-sample set as small compared with Windows, while considering it representative of the current threat landscape. AV-Comparatives Mac Security Test & Review 2025
The lab updated definitions through May 8, kept test systems online for cloud services, and checked protection at several stages: insertion, scanning, copying, and execution. It separately assessed 750 prevalent Mac PUAs and 500 Windows malware samples. These are distinct, deliberately selected test sets—not a matched comparison of infections among Mac and Windows users. A lab result describes the tested products, samples, configuration, and period; it cannot promise protection against every future threat.

AV-Comparatives argued that even a relatively small number of Mac threats can cause widespread damage, particularly because many Mac systems do not use third-party security software. That is the organization’s rationale for taking the samples seriously, not a measured estimate of Mac infection odds.

AV-TEST’s January–February 2026 consumer test evaluated Microsoft Defender Antivirus version 4.18 on Windows 11 Professional. It reported 100% zero-day real-world protection in both months and 100% detection of its recent, prevalent malware reference set in each month. Those results apply to that product and test—not to every Windows computer, every threat, or macOS. They also do not establish that additional security tools are never useful. Likewise, a 100% score in an AV-Comparatives Mac test means that no samples in that particular set were missed; it does not mean universal protection. Its 2024 report used separate sets of 643 recent Mac malware samples, 750 prevalent Mac PUAs, and 500 prevalent Windows malware samples. Threat reports add context, not a Windows-versus-Mac risk ratio
Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2025 describes activity observed through Microsoft’s own telemetry. It identifies Lumma Stealer as its most prevalent observed infostealer between October 2024 and October 2025, and says a mid-2025 operation with government and law-enforcement partners seized or blocked more than 2,300 malicious domains. These details show that threat activity and disruption continue; they do not compare Windows and Mac infection rates. Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2025

The same report says 97% of identity attacks were password-spray attacks. That percentage refers to identity attacks in Microsoft’s reporting, not all malware incidents or all users. It is a reminder that account security matters alongside device malware protection.

What to do as a Mac or Windows user
Do not use platform sample totals as a personal risk score. Keep your operating system and applications updated, treat unexpected downloads and links cautiously, and use the security protections available on your device. For accounts, use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available; malware is only one route to account compromise.

If you are deciding whether to add a security product, look at evidence for the specific operating system, test dates, sample set, and protection method. Consider usability, system impact, support, and any additional features too. A lab result can inform a decision, but it is not a guarantee or a substitute for sensible security habits.
