Windows keeps updating because it handles several kinds of maintenance, not just occasional major upgrades. Security and quality fixes arrive regularly; feature changes follow a different schedule and can roll out gradually; and drivers, .NET, firmware, and apps may also update separately. The exact number of prompts or restarts depends on your Windows version, device, and update settings.
Why Windows keeps offering updates
Windows Update covers multiple streams of work. Monthly quality updates mainly address security and reliability, while feature updates add broader capabilities. Windows 11 also receives some features through periodic servicing and Microsoft Store app updates, rather than putting every change into one annual release. Microsoft describes this delivery model in its Windows 11 feature-delivery guidance and Windows Update FAQ.

Other items can appear alongside operating-system updates or as separate entries, including drivers, .NET components, firmware, and optional previews. A servicing stack update maintains the component responsible for installing Windows updates, helping it install subsequent updates reliably; Microsoft explains this in its Servicing Stack Updates FAQ.

Why updates arrive at different times
Microsoft releases regular monthly security updates and describes Windows 11 feature updates as annual, but not every feature waits for an annual release. Some changes are delivered through monthly servicing or Store app updates. Microsoft also uses phased, measured rollouts, including Controlled Feature Rollout, so two otherwise similar PCs may not receive a new feature on the same day.

Windows 11 includes an optional setting for getting some non-security and feature updates earlier. Go to Settings > Windows Update and turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available to opt in. Microsoft says regular security updates continue on their normal schedule whether this setting is on or off. Turning it on can mean more restarts, because some changes need a restart to take effect. See Microsoft’s guidance on receiving updates as soon as they’re available.
Why an update may need a restart
Some updates change files or components that Windows cannot fully replace while they are in use, so installation completes during a restart. Others can install without one. The type of update, Windows version, device, rollout timing, and any organization-managed update policy all affect what you see. There is no universal number of update prompts or restarts that applies to every PC.

Microsoft’s guidance published August 14, 2026, describes a gradual rollout for specified Windows 11 versions: updates released on or after July 28, 2026, align certain driver, .NET, and firmware updates with the monthly security update so they share one restart. That security update is typically released on the second Tuesday of the month. The change does not cover every update: Microsoft says Defender security intelligence, AI component updates, critical or expedited drivers, and emergency or out-of-band updates are not held for the combined restart. It may not yet be available on every device. Details are in Microsoft’s one-restart-a-month guidance.

How to make updates less disruptive
- Limit inconvenient restart times: Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours and set the hours you usually use the PC. If Windows offers a restart schedule, choose a time that works for you.
- Pause briefly: Go to Settings > Windows Update > Pause updates. Microsoft’s 2026 guidance says a pause can be set for up to 35 days. When it ends, Windows checks for updates and installs the latest ones, so pausing is a temporary deferral, not a permanent way to disable servicing.
- Choose the timing for optional changes: Leave Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available off if you prefer to wait for the normal availability of some non-security and feature updates. Security updates still follow their regular schedule.
- Check what installed: If an update seems unexpected, review Settings > Windows Update > Update history and check your Windows version. A notification does not necessarily mean a new major Windows release is being installed. For failures, Microsoft recommends using the Windows Update troubleshooter; its FAQ provides troubleshooting guidance.
What Windows 10 support status means
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 under standard support. A Windows 10 PC can continue to work, but seeing a component update or notification does not by itself mean the operating system remains in standard support. Check the specific edition and any applicable extended-support arrangement before relying on a support claim. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ sets out the end-of-support details.
