Screen Scrolling by Itself: Find the Input Causing It

Unwanted scrolling can come from a mouse, keyboard, touchpad, touchscreen, or setting. Use a few isolation checks to narrow down the source before seeking repair.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your screen scrolls without you touching the controls, first check whether it happens in one app or across the device. Then disconnect external input devices one at a time and see whether the behavior changes. Unwanted scrolling can come from a mouse, keyboard, touchpad, touchscreen, or a setting; the symptom alone does not identify a single cause.

Start by isolating where the scrolling comes from

Notice whether the page moves in one application, in several apps, or throughout the device. A problem limited to one app may have a different cause from movement that appears everywhere.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Disconnect an external mouse, keyboard, or other pointing device, one at a time if practical. Watch whether the scrolling stops or changes.
  2. If you use a wireless device, disconnect or switch it off rather than only moving it away.
  3. Reconnect devices individually and observe whether the behavior returns.

These checks can narrow down the source, but a change after disconnecting a device does not by itself prove which component is faulty. If the behavior persists with external devices disconnected, continue with the built-in controls and settings.

If you use an external mouse

Check Windows mouse settings

In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. Review the options for how many lines the wheel moves, whether it scrolls a screen or multiple lines, the scroll direction, and whether inactive windows scroll when you hover over them. These settings can explain unexpected movement in particular windows or a direction that feels wrong.

Inspect the wheel and connection

For Logitech mice, Logitech recommends checking that the wheel moves freely and is not physically stuck, and reviewing scroll or gesture settings in the software compatible with the device. It also recommends connecting the mouse or receiver directly rather than through a hub or switch, then disconnecting and reconnecting or re-pairing it. Check for a firmware update if one is offered for your model. Logitech also suggests trying another USB port on Windows and testing the mouse on another computer; a different result helps narrow the problem but does not identify the failed component on its own.

Logitech mentions cleaning the wheel with compressed air as one troubleshooting option. This is not a guaranteed fix, and instructions can differ by model. Logitech notes that some older utilities are no longer maintained; check current device compatibility before following a software path. Avoid forcing a stuck wheel or opening the mouse unless the manufacturer’s instructions for that model support it.

If the built-in Windows touchpad is involved

Microsoft says a missing or outdated driver can contribute to touchpad problems. For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft recommends checking for driver updates through Windows Update. You can also use Device Manager to update the touchpad driver. If updating does not help, or no update is available, reinstalling the touchpad through Device Manager may help.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s mouse-settings support page. If you still use Windows 10, keep that support status in mind when deciding where to seek updates or assistance.

If the movement looks like keyboard navigation

Repeated movement that resembles keyboard navigation is a reason to check whether a key is sticking or activating repeatedly, but the available Microsoft guidance does not establish stuck keys as the cause of a particular scrolling problem.

Windows accessibility features can help you investigate input behavior. Filter Keys can ignore brief or repeated keystrokes, while Toggle Keys can play a sound when Scroll Lock and other lock keys are pressed. These are accessibility and diagnostic settings, not proof that the keyboard caused the scrolling.

If your device has a touchscreen

A Microsoft Q&A response about a Surface Pro 7 describes temporarily disabling the touchscreen, then checking whether scrolling continues while navigating with a mouse or touchpad. If it stops with touch disabled, phantom touches are one possible explanation; that observation does not by itself confirm a hardware fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same Surface-specific response suggests checking whether the issue occurs in UEFI to help distinguish hardware from software behavior. Treat this as guidance for that Surface troubleshooting case, not a general procedure for every touchscreen device. Use instructions for your exact model before changing firmware or startup settings.

If you use an Android device with a mouse

Google’s Android Accessibility Help information says Autoclick (dwell timing) can activate an action automatically after a mouse pointer remains still for a set interval, and that the feature is off by default. It concerns pointer actions; it is not a general explanation for a touchscreen that scrolls by itself. Menu labels can vary by device.

When to seek device-specific support

If basic isolation and the relevant settings or driver checks do not resolve the behavior, contact support for the exact computer, phone, or peripheral. A broad symptom such as “scrolling by itself” is not enough to establish that a device needs replacement or repair, and troubleshooting instructions differ across platforms and models.
