What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If Windows keeps changing your preferred calendar or date format, first identify which setting is reverting: regional format, country or region, display language, or a calendar option inside a particular app. These are separate preferences, and the right fix depends on whether the change affects one app, your Windows account, or the device more broadly.
Which setting is actually changing?
Windows separates language and region preferences. The display language controls the language used in parts of Windows; country or region identifies a location; and regional format controls conventions such as how dates and times are displayed. A calendar choice may also be configured within an individual app. Changing display language is not necessarily the right way to fix a date-format problem. Microsoft explains the language and region settings in Windows.

Before changing anything, note the setting’s current value and the value it switches to. Then check whether the date looks wrong throughout Windows or only in one application. Windows regional format informs date and time conventions used by Windows and apps, but an app may also have its own formatting behavior or calendar options. Calendar conventions differ by culture and region, and Gregorian is not the default everywhere. Microsoft’s calendar and date-format documentation describes these distinctions.
When does the format revert?
Only one app shows a different calendar
If Windows displays dates as expected but one app does not, inspect that app’s language, region, calendar, or date-format preferences. The difference alone does not establish that Windows has reset its regional format.

It changes after sign-in or a restart
Record the setting before signing out or restarting, then check it again afterward. Microsoft documents that some international settings, including user locale, can be reset dynamically based on user preferences. This is one possible avenue to investigate, not proof that synchronization, an update, or a damaged profile caused a particular reset. Microsoft documents dynamic behavior for some Windows language and international settings.
It differs across accounts or appears on the sign-in screen
Current-user preferences and settings applied to the welcome screen, system accounts, or new users have different scopes. If the value changes only for another account or on the sign-in screen, make a note of that distinction; changing your own regional format may not change those other settings.

Could a work or school policy control it?
On a managed PC, an administrator may restrict which user locales can be selected or overridden. Ask your organization’s IT administrator whether a locale policy or device configuration applies before trying to work around management controls. Microsoft’s International policy documentation describes controls that can restrict user locale selection and overrides.

When should an administrator use PowerShell?
Microsoft provides International PowerShell cmdlets for changing international settings on a running Windows installation. Use them only when you know which account or system scope needs to change; they are not a universal first fix for a format that reverts. See Microsoft’s International PowerShell module reference.
For Windows 11, Copy-UserInternationalSettingsToSystem copies selected international settings from the current user to welcome-screen/system accounts and/or new-user accounts. It changes a system setting, requires administrator permission, and takes effect after a restart. Use it when an administrator intends to copy the current user’s settings into those account scopes—not merely because one app displays a different date. Microsoft documents the cmdlet, its parameters, and requirements.

A practical diagnostic checklist
- Identify the value: distinguish regional format, country or region, display language, and an app-specific calendar preference.
- Compare locations: check the date in Windows and in the affected app to determine whether the difference is system-wide or app-specific.
- Note the timing and scope: record whether the change follows sign-in, restart, switching accounts, or opening a particular app.
- Check management: on a work or school device, ask IT about locale restrictions or other configuration before making administrative changes.
- Use system-level tools only for system-level needs: an administrator can review the International cmdlets and, on Windows 11, the copy-settings cmdlet when the goal is to apply settings to system or new-user accounts.
