Why Windows 11 Clipboard History Stops Updating—and What to Try

When Win+V stops showing new copies but ordinary paste still works, verify Clipboard History, check its limits, and test an Explorer restart without assuming it is a permanent fix.

If Windows logo key + V shows stale entries while Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V still work, Clipboard History may have stopped recording new items even though ordinary copying still functions. One Windows 11 user reported that restarting Windows Explorer restored history temporarily, but other reports show that the same step does not always help. Microsoft documents how to enable Clipboard History and its limits; the available reports do not establish the cause or a permanent fix.

First check whether only Clipboard History is affected

  1. Copy a short text string. Select plain text in one app and press Ctrl+C.
  2. Test ordinary paste. Switch to another app and press Ctrl+V. Note whether the text appears.
  3. Check history separately. Press the Windows logo key + V and look for the new item.

If Ctrl+V works but the item is missing from Win+V, describe the symptom as a history-recording or display problem—not a total clipboard failure. A Microsoft Q&A report describes this distinction, but does not identify its cause: Clipboard history not being displayed.

Confirm Clipboard History is on and check its limits

Press the Windows logo key + V. If Windows prompts you to turn on Clipboard History, select Turn on. You can also check Settings > System > Clipboard. Microsoft’s Using the clipboard guidance, accessed in 2026, describes a history of up to 25 copied entries and a 4 MB limit per item. It lists text, HTML, and bitmap as supported formats. Older unpinned items are removed as new ones arrive.

Microsoft also says a PC restart clears unpinned history; pinned items are retained. That documented behavior is different from restarting the Windows Explorer process, which was reported as a temporary workaround for this particular symptom. See Microsoft’s Clipboard History feature page.

Try restarting Windows Explorer as a quick test

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Find Windows Explorer in the process list. If needed, expand the list of processes.
  3. Select Windows Explorer, then choose Restart.
  4. After the taskbar and Start menu return, copy a short text item and check Win+V again.

The taskbar and Start menu may briefly disappear while Explorer restarts. In a Windows 11 report opened September 17, 2026, an ElevenForum user said this restored new history entries temporarily after repeated copying and pasting: Windows Clipboard History stops recording new copied text until Explorer is restarted. This is an individual report, not proof that Explorer is the root cause. In a separate Microsoft Q&A thread, restarting Explorer did not fix the original poster’s problem.

If the issue returns, record what changes

Before trying speculative fixes, note the details that could help distinguish a recurring problem from a one-time interruption:

When to investigate further

If the problem keeps recurring, a clean boot or a test with a new local account can help investigate possible software interference or account-specific configuration. These are general community suggestions for a different recurring Clipboard History issue, not verified cures for this exact failure; see the community discussion about missing Clipboard History items. Avoid treating registry edits or service changes as established fixes for the symptom. The reports available here do not identify a specific component to change.
