Apple specifies a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with a native resolution of 3456 by 2234 pixels (254 pixels per inch) and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Its stated brightness reaches up to 1,600 nits for peak HDR content and up to 1,000 nits for sustained full-screen XDR brightness. Those are Apple’s specifications, not independent measurements. Performance choices for demanding work
Depending on the configuration, M4 Pro supports up to a 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU, while M4 Max reaches up to a 16-core CPU and 40-core GPU. Apple announced unified-memory configurations up to 64GB for M4 Pro and up to 128GB for M4 Max; exact options depend on the chip variant and the 16-inch configuration. The higher GPU and memory ceilings can matter for workloads such as 3D work, video production, or projects that need substantial working memory. They do not automatically make M4 Max the sensible choice: match the configuration to the software and projects you actually run, and weigh the added capability against the total price.
Useful ports and camera
Apple lists three Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports, an SDXC card slot, HDMI, a 3.5-mm headphone jack, and MagSafe 3. Thunderbolt 5 is rated for up to 120 Gbps. Where M4 Pro and M4 Max differ
Choose between the chips by looking at your workload, memory needs, graphics and media-engine demand, expected time away from power, and the price of the exact configuration. Apple publishes maximum battery estimates that favor M4 Pro, while M4 Max offers higher performance and memory ceilings.

Apple’s battery figures are test estimates, not a promise of how long a particular workload will run. Actual runtime varies with work, brightness, and settings. The difference is still worth considering if you often work unplugged: Apple’s stated maximums are three hours lower for M4 Max on both streaming video and wireless web. Apple also reported that M4 Pro rendered a Maxon Redshift scene up to four times faster than the 16-inch Intel Core i9 MacBook Pro and up to three times faster than the 16-inch M1 Pro model. Price and generation matter
This is a premium workstation laptop, and the M4 generation is no longer the newest MacBook Pro in 2026. TechRadar reported the M5 Pro and M5 Max successors in March 2026 and describes the 16-inch MacBook Pro as expensive; casual users may not need its performance. A 2024 M4 model is worth considering only when its actual price, availability, and configuration compare favorably with a like-for-like newer model for your workload. M4 Max may be more than you need
The Max’s higher graphics and memory limits are useful only if your applications and projects can take advantage of them. If your work is mostly everyday computing or does not use those additional resources, paying for M4 Max may buy capacity you rarely use. Compare the price of the specific memory and storage configurations you need, not just the chip names.

Macworld noted the lack of Wi-Fi 7 as a future-proofing drawback in its November 2024 review. That is a missing newer wireless standard, not evidence that the laptop performs poorly on Wi-Fi networks. Macworld review.
The 16-inch format is a deliberate trade-off
The larger screen gives you more room for timelines, code, design canvases, and multiple windows, but this is not the format to choose solely for maximum portability. Compare it with a smaller laptop if screen area and sustained workstation use do not justify carrying and paying for a larger machine. Check the exact configuration’s current specifications if weight is important; the sources cited here do not establish a precise weight comparison.
How to decide whether to buy one
- Identify the work that needs the machine. List the applications, project sizes, and tasks that push your current computer hardest. A demanding creative, engineering, research, or development workflow is a stronger reason to consider this model than general browsing and office work.
- Set a realistic memory and graphics requirement. Choose M4 Pro if its CPU, GPU, and available memory configuration meet your needs. Consider M4 Max when your work specifically benefits from its larger GPU or higher memory ceiling.
- Check your power habits. If long sessions away from an outlet matter, include Apple’s lower maximum battery estimates for M4 Max in your decision, while remembering that real runtime depends on workload and settings.
- Compare current, like-for-like offers. Check local price and stock for the M4 and M5 models with comparable memory and storage. Consider whether the newer model’s changes matter to your work; do not treat the M4 as a bargain without an actual price comparison.
- Decide whether 16 inches earns its place. Choose the larger format when its screen area and workstation use are worth the size and cost to you; otherwise compare a smaller laptop.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro M4 is best suited to people who can put its display, ports, and M4 Pro or M4 Max performance to demanding work. The M4 Pro is the more balanced starting point for many such buyers; M4 Max makes sense when its extra graphics or memory capacity is genuinely needed. In 2026, the decisive question is whether the exact M4 configuration is available at a compelling price beside a comparable M5 model—not whether the M4 was powerful when it launched.
