1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf Wi-Fi isn’t working, first check whether the problem affects one device or every device, then distinguish a connection to the router from access to the internet. A Wi-Fi icon can mean a device is connected to the local network even when the router, modem, or internet provider is not delivering internet. Start with the checks below; save disruptive changes such as a Windows network reset for later.
First, identify what “not working” means
Check that Wi-Fi is turned on, airplane mode is off, and the device is connected to the network you intend to use. Note the exact status: it may be connected to Wi-Fi, unable to connect, or connected with no internet. Those states point to different parts of the connection.

A device can communicate wirelessly with the router while the path from the router through the modem to the internet is down. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide separates a Wi-Fi connection from internet access and recommends checking whether other devices can get online. On Windows 11, begin with the Get Help Network and Internet troubleshooter.

- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Only one device fails: Focus on that device’s Wi-Fi and airplane-mode settings, saved network credentials, network adapter or driver, and adapter power management. Use that device’s operating-system troubleshooting guidance.
- Several devices fail: Check the modem and router, their status lights, and whether your internet provider reports a service problem. If the equipment appears to be operating but devices still cannot get online, contact the provider.
On Windows, Microsoft also documents a ping test to the default gateway, the router address used by the PC. A reply confirms that the PC can reach the router and shifts attention toward the modem or provider connection; no reply points back toward the local wireless or router path. The guide describes this as a Windows diagnostic, not a universal test for phones or other operating systems.
Try the reversible fixes before changing settings
- Reconnect to the intended network. Confirm the network name (SSID). If the device has a saved connection that may be stale, forget that network and reconnect using the correct password.
- Restart the modem and router. Unplug their power, wait about 30 seconds, then power the modem first. After it stabilizes, power the router. This briefly disconnects other people and devices using the network. The wait time is Microsoft support guidance, not a guaranteed repair.
- Check for an outage. If multiple devices remain offline, check your provider’s service-status information or contact its support team.
When Wi-Fi works in one place but not another
If the connection is reliable near the router but weak or unstable elsewhere, investigate coverage before resetting devices or changing security settings. Test in several locations and note connection reliability or speed before making changes. Then move closer to the router and, where practical, place it in a more open, central location. Walls and other physical obstructions, nearby interference, and the selected wireless band or channel settings can affect the signal. Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi and home layout covers placement and coverage.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
If the router advertises separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try the other band. Differences in range or device compatibility may help explain why a connection works in one location or on one device but not another. Channel width can also affect some older adapters. Change it only if you know how to restore the original router setting, and compare results rather than assuming a change will help.
A Wi-Fi range extender is a possible option when the issue is weak coverage and moving the router or client is impractical. Its placement and compatibility with the existing router matter. It can extend a usable signal into a weak area, but it will not fix an internet-provider outage, incorrect credentials, or a failing device driver.

Use an Ethernet test to separate Wi-Fi from the internet connection
If you can connect a computer to the router by Ethernet, try opening a website. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, that points toward the Wi-Fi router or wireless connection rather than a general loss of internet service. If the computer lacks an Ethernet port, Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance for Windows notes that a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can be used. This is a diagnostic option, not a necessary purchase for every Wi-Fi problem.
Windows steps for a problem isolated to a PC
The following escalation applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11; it is not a set of general steps for phones, Macs, or other devices. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guide recommends using Windows network troubleshooting and then investigating the adapter when simpler checks have not resolved the issue.

- Run the network troubleshooter. On Windows 11, use Get Help’s Network and Internet troubleshooter. For other Windows guidance, follow the Wi-Fi troubleshooting page for the version you use.
- Use the documented network commands. Microsoft includes commands to reset TCP/IP and clear DNS state in its Windows troubleshooting sequence. Follow its current instructions and run them in the specified Windows environment; do not copy Windows commands into another operating system.
- Check the network adapter and driver. Use Microsoft’s guide to check for driver problems and, if needed, update or reinstall the adapter driver.
- Check adapter power management. Microsoft includes disabling power saving for the network adapter as a possible Windows fix.
- Install Windows updates and restart. Apply relevant updates, then restart the PC before moving to a more disruptive reset.
- Use network reset only as a late step. A Windows network reset restores network adapter settings. It may mean setting up VPN software or virtual switches again, so reserve it for a persistent problem after less disruptive checks.
Don’t weaken Wi-Fi security as a casual compatibility fix
Some older devices may not support newer router security settings, but changing security modes can reduce protection for the entire network. Microsoft describes WPA3 as the current standard in its Wi-Fi guidance, and its Windows security notice warns that WEP and TKIP are outdated and have known vulnerabilities. Check the router and device documentation for compatibility before changing the security mode; avoid switching to an older standard just to see whether it connects.
