Reports say it also blocks full-chat exports, stops conversation media from automatically saving to the phone’s gallery, and disables Meta AI in that chat. The reported aim is to reduce the risk of linked clients reading messages and passing them to AI tools without other participants’ knowledge—not to replace WhatsApp’s default end-to-end encryption.
Why is WhatsApp restricting chats?
Help Net Security reported that the feature is intended to address modified web clients that can read conversations, as well as tools that may forward messages to AI agents for processing without the other participants knowing. The basic logic is that if a conversation is not synced to a linked session, that session has no copy of it to read. This is the rationale described in reporting, not a public WhatsApp announcement about Restricted Chat. Help Net Security’s September 14, 2026 report explains the concern.

What changes when you enable Restricted Chat?
Reports describe these limits for the conversation you choose:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- It stays on the primary phone. The chat does not sync to linked devices, including WhatsApp Web or a second phone paired with the account.
- Media is not automatically saved to the gallery. Images and other media shared in the conversation do not automatically appear in the device’s gallery.
- Full-chat export is blocked. Participants cannot export the entire conversation history.
- Meta AI is unavailable in that chat. The reported restriction applies within the selected conversation.
These are per-conversation controls, not a setting that makes every chat or the entire WhatsApp account inaccessible from linked devices. Details come from beta-feature reporting and may change as testing continues. WABetaInfo’s October 2, 2026 report describes the rollout and the listed effects.

Does Restricted Chat mean WhatsApp messages are not encrypted?
No. WhatsApp’s August 25, 2026 account-security announcement says personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default. Restricted Chat is reported as an additional control over where a selected conversation is available and what participants can do with it. It should not be read as a fix for a failure of default encryption.
How is it different from Chat Lock?
Chat Lock and Restricted Chat address different privacy concerns. Chat Lock adds authentication and hides selected chats in a locked folder; Restricted Chat is reported to prevent a selected conversation from syncing to linked devices and to limit export, gallery saving, and Meta AI.

As of October 3, 2026, reports describe a gradual rollout to some Android beta testers, not a general release. WABetaInfo reported availability for some testers using Android beta version 2.26.39.11. An earlier September 14 report from Help Net Security described the feature as under development in version 2.26.36.5 and not yet enabled for testers at that time; the versions reflect different testing stages, not conflicting current instructions. Installing a cited beta version does not guarantee that the feature will appear, and no general public-release date was established in the reports. TechJuice’s October 3, 2026 summary likewise reported no announced public timing.
