Why Websites Restrict RSS and Automated Access—and What It Means for Readers

A website can welcome browser visits while restricting RSS fetches. Understand robots.txt, feed-specific blocks, and the difference between a stated preference and a technical control.

A website can allow you to open a page in a browser while refusing a feed reader or other automated client. That is because RSS fetching, search-engine crawling, and bot controls can operate through different systems. A rule in robots.txt communicates a crawler preference; it does not authorize access or secure a feed. The publisher or its hosting and bot-management services can enforce restrictions separately.

Why is this website blocking my RSS reader?

The failure does not necessarily mean the whole website is offline. Your reader requests a feed URL, which may be treated differently from a page opened interactively in a browser. The feed may have been removed or changed, the feed server may return an error, or a hosting service or upstream bot-control system may deny that request.

Opening the site successfully only shows that your browser can reach the page. It does not prove that the feed endpoint exists or that every client is allowed to fetch it. Google documents this distinction for its own Feedfetcher: a publisher can serve an error to that user agent or work with its hosting service to limit feed access. Other feed readers may behave differently; Google’s description is not a universal account of how all readers fetch feeds.

What to check when a feed fails

  • Check whether the publisher still links to the feed or provides a current feed address; the old endpoint may have changed.
  • Distinguish a missing feed from a denial or other server error. A reader’s error message may help, but a normal browser visit to the homepage alone cannot identify the cause.
  • Look for a publisher-provided newsletter, follow option, or contact channel if the feed is unavailable.
  • Respect an explicit restriction rather than trying to evade it. Ask the publisher whether it offers an approved way to follow updates.

Can a website block RSS feeds?

Yes. A publisher can configure a feed host or server to return an error, and it can use hosting or bot-management controls to limit automated requests. The exact mechanism depends on the site and service. Google’s documentation says a publicly available feed cannot be restricted by Google itself from user access, but publishers can restrict what its Feedfetcher receives by serving an error or working with their host.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

That does not mean every feed reader uses Google’s Feedfetcher or follows the same rules. A block may affect one automated client and not another, or may apply specifically to the feed URL rather than the site’s regular pages.

Does robots.txt apply to RSS feeds?

robots.txt is part of the Robots Exclusion Protocol: a way for site operators to communicate crawler preferences about URL paths. RFC 9309 is explicit: “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” It also says the protocol is not a substitute for valid security measures. A Disallow directive is therefore not a password, and by itself it does not technically prevent a client from requesting a URL.

Whether a particular client follows the file depends on that client’s role and implementation. Google says its automated crawlers read robots.txt, but the protocol does not apply to its user-controlled crawlers, including feed subscriptions. Google’s Feedfetcher documentation puts it plainly: “Since Feedfetcher requests come from explicit action by human users, and not from automated crawlers, Feedfetcher ignores robots.txt rules.” This describes Google’s service, not every feed reader.

Why allow the website but restrict automated access?

There is no single motive that applies to every site. The controls can reflect different preferences and operational choices:

  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices

  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Communicating crawler preferences: A site may specify which parts of its URL space crawlers should avoid. That is the role of robots.txt, not access security.
  • Expressing how content may be used: Cloudflare offers content signals for preferences concerning search, AI input, and AI training. These signals communicate preferences; they should not be mistaken for technical guarantees that a particular party will comply.
  • Managing automated traffic: Infrastructure providers offer separate bot-management controls. Cloudflare’s Bot Management API, for example, documents controls for automated traffic. These are provider-specific products, not universal web standards.

Bandwidth, security, commercial concerns, and preferences about AI training may also matter to an individual publisher, but the mere presence of a blocked feed does not establish which reason applies. Cloudflare itself cautions that robots.txt may not stop unwanted scraping, while describing its policy language as a way to communicate creator preferences to bot operators.

Three different layers that are easy to confuse

Layer What it does What it does not establish
Client type A search crawler, a user-directed feed fetcher, and other automated clients may follow different rules. Google documents that its Feedfetcher is triggered by a user’s request and ignores robots.txt. Google’s behavior does not prove how another feed reader or crawler behaves.
Control layer robots.txt communicates crawler preferences; a feed host response or bot-management service can apply technical controls. A robots.txt directive is not access authorization or a security barrier.
Use and scope Ordinary indexing preferences and content-use signals about search, AI input, or AI training can address different uses. A signal expressing a preference is not, on its own, evidence that all automated access is blocked.

What readers should take away

A working website and a blocked RSS feed are compatible: they can be different endpoints reached by different kinds of clients and governed by different controls. Robots.txt communicates crawler preferences, but feed availability is determined by the feed and the systems serving it. If access is denied, use a publisher-approved alternative or ask the publisher rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
